Last Tuesday, in association with V-Day, Eve Ensler, award-winning playwright of The Vagina Monologues, hosted a panel discussion regarding sexual violence, in the light of the Steubenville rape case. The event sold out in eight minutes. Though it was exciting to know that every seat would filled with engaged listeners, there was something so annoyingly typical about the scene that greeted me: the audience was composed almost entirely ... While Steubenville showed the world the dark undercurrent of social media websites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, it's not the first recorded case of cyber bullying, and it certainly won't be the last. In fact, Internet victim bullying and hateful twitter campaigns seem to be the new normal, as evidenced by the sexual assault case currently unfolding in Torrington, Connecticut. The case surrounds two 18-year-old football players ... Read More

I have been immersed in the Steubenville story since I wrote on the court verdict earlier this week. We've read about the death threats to the victim, we've watched the media coverage, and we're deeply saddened by the reactions. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine stated in response, “Let me be ... Read More

The Steubenville verdict was announced yesterday and Trent Mays and Ma'Lik Richmond have been sentenced to at least a year in juvenile prison facility. Mays was sentenced to an additional year because he took a photo of the underage victim. The sentence was barely out before Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said he was continuing his investigation to consider charges against anyone involved who hasn’t spoken up.  A grand jury ... This past year has been absolutely chock full of cringe-worthy soundbites and disheartening stories about rape around the world. From the ubiquitous mishandling (and biological misunderstanding) of the subject by politicians in the 2012 election, to recent horrific events in the US and abroad, it seems that we can’t escape from the heart-breaking regularity of sexual assault around the world.    Of late, two high-profile news ...
