The third annual BUKU Music + Arts Project – which went down on March 21st and 22nd in New Orleans – delivered the same electric and eclectic experience the festival always promises. Crowds gathered from far and wide to appreciate a power-packed line-up of musical guests, while also enjoying BUKU’s signature graffiti wall, and an array delicious local foods that encapsulated the rich culture of New Orleans. The killer lineup included a range of ... Read More

The music industry is a wacky place that just seems to get wackier every day. Being a DIY-driven artist in a corporate world sounds more like a path to grey hair than to success. But in 2011, a few brave souls organized a completely DIY national tour, titled "Check Yo Ponytail." The 20 dates featured the talents of Spank Rock, Big Freedia, Pictureplane, The Death Set, and the mastermind behind it all: Franki Chan.
Franki Chan and his partner Danny Johnson ... Read More
Oh my dear. Say it isn’t so. The designers over at sexy costume source Yandy are using a terrible misinterpretation of “twerking” to sell outfits. In a section they call “Costumes to Twerk In,” the venders market costumes that expose the buttocks. Of course, the first is an knock-off Miley Cyrus VMA costume called “Furry Party Animal Halloween Costume.” The other costumes have absolutely nothing to do with twerking ... Read More

Today history was made. Over 350 people found themselves in the middle of Herald Square today...twerking. Big Freedia, the New Orleans bounce hip-hop artist and twerk extraordinaire, led the mass twerkers to set the Guinness World Record for the Most People Twerking Simultaneously.
For two whole minutes, everyone from a man in a suit and tie to an 80-year-old woman twerked their way into history. Even a few BUST people made it to ... Read More
Big Freedia, New Orleans bounce musician extraordinaire and BUST favorite (featured in “The Men We Love” April/May 2010 issue), is inviting you to put the VMA's out of your mind once and for all by helping a true professional set the Guinness World Record for Most People Twerking Simultaneously.
Yes. You read that correctly. Don’t lie; if you’re in the New York area, you’re definitely going to want to be there to see this.
Take a ... Read More
This weekend, I got caught in the crossfire of yet another Miley Cyrus twerking debate, and I realized that race is a feminist issue now as much as it ever was. For decades (centuries!), the fight against race and gender inequality have been intimately bound together, all the way from Ida B. Wells’s anti-lynching papers, which completely disrupted stereotypes applied to both black and white women, to the public outcry against the ... Read More
At Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, Miley Cyrus took the stage and showed off her so-called twerking skills. For the past few days, the starlet’s performance has been getting A LOT of media attention. Some have complained that her performance was too sexy and scandalous, but others have addressed another issue—of Cyrus’ appropriation of black culture, and using African-American women as props. Ok Miley, ... Read More
Bounce queen and BUSTie Big Freedia is probably the foremost authority we have on twerking, and she has a lot to say about Miley Cyrus.
When BUST reached out to Big Freedia, she sent us an official statement on the Miley Cyrus twerk-gate. She said, “Get me and Miley together so I could give her ass some lessons.”
The New Orleans musician shared some insight on the current twerking craze, its origins in New Orleans’ bounce scene, and why ... Read More

This past weekend I was lucky enough to cover the BUKU Music + Art Project at New Orleans' own Mardi Gras World. Located between an overgrown railroad line and an abandoned power plant right on the Mississippi river, this young festival (only it's second year) was a huge success. The majority of BUKU had an electronic dance music theme, with nearly 12,000 fans in attendance to see headliners such as Major Lazer, Flux Pavilion, Calvin Harris, Nero, Dillion Francis, ... Queen diva Big Freedia has done it again. “Feelin’ Yourself” is one catchy-ass hit from the upcoming LP The Idol. The best bounce artist in the biz raps, twerks, and dances in the middle of a boxing ring, all the while managing to not get punched in the face by the two battling ladies. The New Orleans-based rapper commands her audience to “Step into the ring if ya feeling yourself!” and looks damn good while doing so. Turns out a lot ... Read More
