Being a woman in the United States looking at the legislation and political climate regarding women’s bodies, it’s fairly easy to lose faith. It would be an understatement to say that the government’s relationship with women is not pretty.
It’s refreshing, then, to see people in positions of power who actually think of women as more than baby incubators. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon stated last week to the Commission of Population and ... Read More

If there’s one thing I’ve ever learned from watching The Daily Show (or just being a decent human being with some form of common sense) is that you never, ever compare anything to Hitler, the Nazis, or the Holocaust. Ever. Unless you are, in fact, discussing Hitler, the Nazis, or the Holocaust, nothing should ever be compared to them. Never. It’s the number one way to lose credibility in a discussion, come off as an insensitive ass with little ... Read More

According to the state of Arizona, it does.
The state passed a bill on Thursday called the “Women’s Health and Safety Act,” a name so hilariously (and infuriatingly) inaccurate that I can’t begin to wonder how they got away with it. To go along with its all-kinds-of-wrong title are some all-kinds-of-wrong stipulations of the bill:Any sexual education must focus on and prioritize birth and adoption (sex ed is not mandatory in Arizona)

Before you read this, I need you to do something. Go to Rick Perry’s Facebook page and read the comments on the top photo on his wall. Go on, it’s right here. I’ll wait.
Yes, that’s correct: in an inspiring and hilarious show of solidarity, women have taken to Republican Governor Rick Perry’s Facebook page to describe (in full detail) their menstrual cycles, use of birth control, and general vajayjay status reports. Because he’s ... Read More

On our way out of the BUST office this past Friday afternoon, interns Maura, Ginny, and I were remarking on the difficulties of feminist blogging, namely that “We can only say ‘I hate Rush Limbaugh’ so many times!”
Since calling Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke a slut, Limbaugh's been all over the news because of his ludicrous defense of his actions, and buzz has continued over the number of advertisers who've dropped his show. I’m certainly not the ... Read More

2012 has been a tough year so far for women’s rights, and it’s only March. With legislation cropping up across the nation that seeks to limit our access to birth control and to put hurdle after hurdle between a woman and a legal abortion, it seems only fair that female legislators are turning the tables. Democrat Nina Turner of the Ohio State Senate has introduced Senate Bill 307, which aims to regulate men’s access to erectile dysfunction drugs ... Read More

Late last month, 800 battleground state voters were asked how they felt about Congress's war on women, and the results are in: they're pissed off!
Among those polled in 8 battleground states, a near consensus exists that women should have access to birth control, that insurers should cover it, and that the decision to use birth control is a private one. Kind of a no brainer, considering nearly every woman will use some form of contraceptive in her ... Read More

Here at BUST, we’ve been following the story of Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke and the fight for affordable contraception pretty well. We’ve also followed the aftermath, which notably involved radio host and creep extraordinaire Rush Limbaugh verbally abusing Fluke, calling her a “prostitute,” and demonstrating his general lack of understanding of the way birth control and contraception work (explained brilliantly by the fabulous ... At this point, dealing with the shit that spews from Rush Limbaugh’s mouth becomes physically exhausting. I don’t know how he manages to keep topping himself, but he’s done it again – this time in the form of a horribly misogynistic (and just plain creepy) radio rant against Georgetown Law School student Sandra Fluke.
Fluke testified during an unofficial hearing headed by Nancy Pelosi, giving a personal account about the health ... Read More

Today the Senate shut down Sen. Roy Blunt's controversial amendment which would allow any employer the right to refuse coverage for any health service in conflict with their religious beliefs. The debate centered around women's health, namely contraception, and brought us that lovely all-male hearing on the issue and a lot of ungrounded slut shaming from conservative pundits. Most Democrats and Republican Olympia Snowe voted no on the measure, citing ... Read More
