Are you a kick-ass lady? Wanna nosh, drink, and exchange ideas with similarly kick-ass ladies? Here’s your chance!
The Lady Project, a Providence-based organization for female entrepreneurs and curious, creative women, is hosting its second annual Lady Project Summit on Saturday, April 12, 2014.
Last year’s Summit, which featured BUST co-founder Debbie Stoller as its keynote speaker, ruled super-hard. You won’t want ... Read More
We hear it all the time: sex sells. And it’s true. As the art critic John Berger has suggested, advertisements are effective when they sell a fantasy: buy this product, and you will be envied by all. Women in both art and advertising are often posed for the male gaze; in other words, even if there’s a man in an ad photo, the woman is shown facing the consumer, promising to be just as attainable as the product she sells. Her body is symbolically ... Read More
The average woman earns about 81 percent of what the average man doing the same job makes. Although we’ve made great strides in the last 25 years, the recent recession hasn’t helped decrease the pay gap. A recent study by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that women are paid more than men in only two full-time job fields. Business Insider used the BLS’s report to determine what American jobs have the largest pay ... Read More

Founder of Lululemon and resident bald dude Chip Wilson has always been a bit...off. In a 2009 blog post, he suggested this sigh-inducing theory:
"Breast cancer also came into prominence in the 1990's. I suggest this was due to the number of cigarette-smoking Power Women who were on the pill (initial concentrations of hormones in the pill were very high) and taking on the stress previously left to men in the working world."
Who knew giant piles of money also ... Read More

Anyone with a brain would agree that the rise of women like Marissa Mayer (Yahoo!) and Meg Whitman (Hewlett-Packard) to the coveted role of CEO should be cause for celebration. For the first time in history, women are in charge of some of the most important change-making companies out there. But Women's E-News is suggesting that we "hold the cheers." As it turns out, a woman at the top may be nothing more than a scapegoat for a faltering company. After all, ... Read More

A study at the Columbia Business School recently exposed how, in the work place, women are asked for help more frequently, and that their help is less appreciated than that of their male counterparts.
Sharon Meers, contributor to the Wall Street Journal, thinks this behavior may be an after-effect of teaching our children that neatness and niceness are virtues primarily for girls. Later in life, she muses, women are looked at merely as "merry wives of the ... Read More

Abercrombie and Fitch is having a “meltdown,” reports Buzzfeed. Why? Because girls aren’t buying the whole “cool kids wear Abercrombie” thing anymore. Women’s clothing sales have dropped 30% in the last quarter, contributing greatly to an overall 10% decline in business.
Company CEO Mike Jeffries isn’t revealing much about the drop (don’t let 'em see you sweat, ... Read More

I don’t know about you, but I grew up positively drowning in Barbies. As I got older, I began to notice that all mine looked the same. (Go figure!) I read articles explaining just how unrealistic Barbie’s proportions are, and had to come to terms with the fact that I would never have perpetually pointed toes, hair that changes color in the pool, or perfectly symmetrical lady parts. We all know the dangers of comparing ourselves to a small, plastic ... Read More
This news is going to kill you- in a good way. The ultra-awesome riot grrrrl group Bikini Kill is launching their own record label, Bikini Kill Records. Their 25th anniversary will mark the label's birth. The Bikini Kill back catalog is now available via bikinikill.com, eMusic and iTunes, as are the group's spin-off bands The Frumpies and The Casual Dots. On Tuesday, Senate Republicans blocked the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill that would have ensured women be paid the same amount as their male counterparts. Despite the fact that this bill seems to make perfect sense to anyone with half a brain, the final vote was 52-47. The real mind-boggling cherry on top of this already non-sensical sundae is the fact that several female senators (who apparently don’t mind being paid less than their male ... Read More
