Nowadays, with all the extensive medical care, doctors and pain meds available for soon-to-be-mothers, pregnancy seems like a walk in the park! While about 200 years ago, pregnancy was almost like a death sentence, now the prospect of a childbirth-related death is almost unheard of, right? Actually, wrong. Each year childbirth complications kill 4.3 million women and babies worldwide (just as a comparison, AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis kill 4.2 million people ... Read More
In Barbie Birth, the maternity photographer Katie Moore invites us into a private moment in the life of the iconic doll: the birth of her child. Following the plastic princess from the moment she goes into labor to her first breastfeeding session, the photographs read like an eerily polished family photo album. Ken and Nurse Barbie aid the birthing doll as she goes through her home birthing process; all three never break their ... Read More
I have loved the photographer Alessandra Sanguinetti from a young age; her poignant renditions of newborn and deceased animals on faraway farms broke my heart, translating something ineffable about growth and mortality. Arguably her most renowned series consists of her portraits of two Argentine girls living in rural Buenos Aires, a project which she stumbled into when they kept interrupting her photographic work on a friend’s ... I loved the summer horror flick The Conjuring, a creative, visually arresting retelling of a supposedly true exorcism story. The haunted house represented in the film was (as legend has it) haunted by the ghost of a woman who killed her child decades prior. As the final credits rolled on screen, visions of Vera Farmiga as the brave and compassionate medium Lorraine Warren clouded my thoughts; she was nothing short of magical. Then I caught my ...  Getting ready to pop out a wee-one but still unsure what to expect? Want something a little more tangible than a viewing of The Miracle of Life? Not me. I certainly don't fondly reminisce about the film's bird's eye view of the vaginal opening or the loud screams of my fellow high school classmates. I did not think the horrors of that movie could be topped. Then there came Laerdal's birthing simulator, MamaNatalie. Bring ole' Natalie into your home ... Read More
There may be some mothers in the audience who can refute this, but to me, childbirth has always been filed under the "terrifying and awful" category of life experiences. And I'm not saying the actual "having a baby" thing isn't a joyous occasion, sitcoms have episodes based around that concept all the time. I'm just assuming that shooting a human being out of your vag can't be fun.  That's why I'm mildly horrified that women in Zimbabwe were getting fined for ... Read More
For some ungodly reason, these two guys wanted to feel their wives’ labor pains for themselves. Sweet? Strange? Well, it’s definitely something. After technicians hooked electrode simulators onto the guys’ abdomens, they electrocuted them (!) over and over to simulate labor. Yowza! The dudes start out laughing but that doesn’t last long. Check out the video, and then for Goddess’ sake - thank your mom. BONUS: If your twisted self enjoyed ... Read More
Who should be the one to cut the cord? Nobody, perhaps. Mary Cealleigh, a midwife educator from Texas, believes that leaving the umbilical cord attached after birth is healthier for the baby. "Babies' immune systems are going through huge changes at a very rapid rate when they're first born," Cealleigh says. "Not disrupting the baby's blood volume at that time helps prevent future disease." Those who have tried it say that it also helps the navel ... Read More
Dennis Storm and Valerio Zena, the hosts of a Dutch TV show called "Guinea Pigs," have done lots of crazy things before, including eating bits of each other's flesh. But in this episode, the men wanted to have the chance to experience what women go through during labor--and boy did they ever. With electrodes on their stomach simulating contractions, which got stronger over time, and a labor that was scheduled to last two hours, the men laughed, screamed, and ... Read More
