The British Government is planning to legalize same-sex marriage by the time next summer rolls around. This means that marriage ceremonies between same-sex couples could be performed as early as 2014. Maria Miller, the Equalities Minister, presented this plan to the House of Commons today. This new legislation includes several particular exceptions, added to pacify opponents of the bill—including a ban on gay marriage within the Church of England and the ... Read More

The election is over, and there are plenty of reasons to celebrate! Besides the re-election of President Barack Obama and “America’s happy warrior” Vice President Joe Biden, this election saw the legalization of gay marriage in Maine and Maryland, the legalization of marijuana in Washington and Colorado, and more women elected to the Senate than ever before. I hope you spent last night cheering and hugging random strangers in a bar, but ... Read More

Today (well, today in Australia), Australian Labor Senator Louise Pratt delivered one of the most eloquent arguments for marriage equality that I’ve ever seen.Senator Pratt, whose partner is transgender, gave an emotionally charged speech dissecting the logic of discriminatory marriage laws and their effect upon the nation—and truly, it doesn’t get much plainer than this:
“I think it is one of the bitterest, bitterest ironies of this ... Read More

When I first started watching this anti-Obama video, I thought it was satire. Given the hideous acting and low production values, it was a pretty safe assumption. I expected the familiar face of a comedian (maybe someone from the Daily Show) to come on screen and say something that would make it clear that the people behind the video knew how idiotic and ignorant it was. But no, this is a real thing. I'd try to explain how absurd it is, but it’s only ... Read More

In the past, extremists had a penchant for setting things on fire (three words: Salem Witch Hunt). But for 65-year-old Michael Leisner, there’s nothing quite like setting a box of cereal ablaze to protest General Mills’ support of same-sex marriage.
Deeming his Honey Nut Cheerios a “homosexual treat”, the Minnesota resident took a blowtorch to his box. Unfortunately for Leisner, he ended up getting more than he bargained for. While ... Read More

Being gay is hard. But being a young gay person is even harder. Not only must you face homework-filled nights and awkward stages, but you're also forced to grapple with a difference that could cost you everything: your family, your friends, your education, your job. Oh, and let’s not forget about those good Christian pastors who want to watch you perish behind an electric fence.
The many issues affecting these teens have garnered national attention in ... Read More

Today is a victory for equal rights in Massachusetts, where a federal appeals court just declared that the federal Defense of Marriage act is unconstitutional on the grounds that it unfairly denies equal benefits to legally married same-sex couples.
The ruling is also a victory for the Obama administration, which had refused to defend that part of the 1996 law. Although the decision does not establish a national right to gay marriage, hopefully the ... Read More

...the moment we've all been waiting for.
After a months-well, actually years!-long debate, today is (finally) the day for closing arguments in the Prop 8 trial. According to NPR, this decision could be made in a such a way that could (hopefully) roadblock potential future anti-gay-marriage laws, or it could affect only states where "same-sex couples already have broad legal rights, but can't get married."
(I'm sorry, is my bias showing?)
Hope and pray to whatever ... Read More
