Have you guys seen HBO's new show Girls? If not, you should definitely check it out. It's honest, hilarious, and all about us- that is, if you're a twenty something female or a slightly misguided post-grad. It's the TV show brainchild of Judd Apatow and Lena Dunham, known best for her film Tiny Furniture. But Girls has been criticized for not representing all of us, an apt critique of a show with a so far only white cast.
Perhaps Dunham is trying to remedy ... Read More

To say that there’s been cultural debate about HBO’s Girls would be a major understatement. Journalists, TV critics, and bloggers alike have all put in their two cents about its shortcomings–its apparent lack of racial and ethnic diversity in particular.
Girls, which is written (and directed and produced) Lena Dunham, focuses on the lives of four close twenty-something friends as they live and attempt to make their way in New York City. Those ... Read More

In two days, Lena Dunham's HBO series "Girls" will finally premiere after months and months of hype. And while that hype has been mostly positive, sometimes even downright reverent (Emily Nussbaum writes: "When a TV critic reports on a new show, it’s okay to say the series is promising, even the next big thing, but ideally, one shouldn’t go native. One should probably also talk in the third person. In this case, however, I’ll have to make an ... Read More

Female friendships take center stage in Lena Dunham’s new HBO show
Hannah, the character Lena Dunham plays in her new HBO series, Girls (which premiered April 15), thinks she may be the voice of her generation. Or, she adds, “at least a voice of a generation.” And while Hannah may be right to amend her assertion, in Dunham’s case, the former statement may be more accurate. The 25-year-old native New Yorker first came to prominence with her 2010 film, ... Read More

Voice-of-my-generation Lena Dunham, the creator/star of the relatable flick Tiny Furniture, has something new to be proud of. She wrote and produced the upcoming HBO television series, Girls, set to premiere April 15, 2012. Dunham explained that she was simply writing what she knows. “I felt like there wasn’t a pop culture mirror reflecting girls my age experiencing the trails and tribulation of being female that this specific time."

Just when I think I can't love Tina Fey any more than I already do, she up and goes and does something to make me love her even harder. In this case, she hosts a 2-hour NPR special called "The Hidden World of Girls." It is so good that I really wish she could have her own series, like a female Ira Glass. Unfortunately, I don't think NPR gives anyone their own show unless they have two things: a shween and a speech impediment. But enough about that.

I remember begging my mom for an Easy Bake Oven. Well, actually, I begged her for the Creepy Crawlers playset and an Easy Bake Oven, but she said I could have only one. Since I was too young to explicate a formal critique of gender dichotomies in children's toy advertising, and brownies seemed way more useful to me than bugs, I went for the Easy Bake. Only one photo exists of me using my new toy--in it, I’m frowning at the little white oven, waiting for a ... Read More
With Halloween right around the corner, the Misfits will soon be in heavy rotation on my turntable. Not that they aren’t usually on my playlist; I’m a die-hard Danzig fan, I’ve rocked a devilock, and my now-boyfriend’s inclusion of Pajo’s stripped-down version of “Hybrid Moments” at the end of a mixtape is what won him a third date. I am also a fan of cute girls, and a downright sucker for a lady with a ukulele ... Read More

Black women have long been part of rock music’s cultural landscape, from Lauryn Hill to Betty Davis to Tina Turner to Missy Elliot. But mention people who rock, and black girls will rarely show up at the top of a list most likely populated by aging white dudes with expensive guitars. Black Girls Rock Inc., a New York based non-profit whose mission it is to empower young women of color through mentorship, arts education, cultural exploration and public service ... Read More
Here's a little something to brighten your Monday morning...and the rest of the day as well if it stays a little too bleh for your tastes.
I saw this commercial recently and I gotta admit, it was pretty exciting to see young girls being represented doing whatever their little hearts desire. I teared up a bit, no joke.(I understand we could get into a whole debate about marketing and targeting, etc...but let's just enjoy this moment, shall we?)
