While the rest of America was celebrating beach season, we here at BUST were craftily gathering intel on all the best movies, TV, and music coming this autumn. And we packed all the amazing results into our annual Fall Preview Issue!  In this issue, BUST gets up close and personal with our cover gal, groundbreaking rocker and Portandia star Carrie Brownstein. We also have killer interviews with indie film darling Gaby Hoffman, funnyman Eric ... Read More
Stop what you're doing right now! Lena Dunham has just announced her book tour for her upcoming collection of essays, out September 30th, entitled "Not That Kind of Girl." Cue celebratory dance and requisite trips to Barnes and Nobles around the country. As someone with experience camping out in bookstores for midnight releases (I'm lookin' at you Harry Potter's four through seven) I can confidently say this reading and Q&A will rank amongst the top. Tina ... Read More
Celebrities. We know 'em, we love 'em, and there are a select few that never fail to inspire us. As such, it's all the more exciting when we find out two of our favorite ladies see in each other what we see in them. What could be better than two of your personal heroines swapping clothes, sipping beers, and collaborating? These are the friendships we can't get enough of:1. Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, co-stars and creators; comediennes extraordinaire. First ... Read More
With the event of increasingly female-centric TV programs like Broad City and Girls, more often than usual we find ourselves yelling passionately at the screen, "Yes! Yes! That's exactly how it is!" That's the power of representation, and the reason it matters. Individuals who never feel kinship with what they see in media can wind up with a nasty sense of isolation. Seeing people with whom I can identify represented on TV makes me feel more comfortable with ... Read More
Ahh, Valentine’s Day — that 24-hour block designed to sell greeting cards, indicate the lonely and breed competition in healthy relationships. I love flowers and candlelit dinners as much as the next pair of pants, but we can all agree on the somewhat forced aspect of a holiday that first calls to mind overcrowded restaurants and cheap plush teddy bears. The brouhaha is enough to make you wanna  take your celebration (or, demolition...) inside. ... Read More
Rookie seems to do no wrong, and the release of their new grrrl power anthem "Go Forth, Feminist Warriors" is a perfect example of their flawlessness.  Jessica Hopper, Rookie's music editor, hatched the idea for a feminist version of "We Are the World" in the same place she gets most of her inspiration; the shower. Armed with the killer idea, she enlisted the help of Katy Davidson and Marianna Ritchey from the song writing duo Lloyd & Michael. Sarah ... Read More
Put an Oscar-nominated actress on it! Super-talented style icon, actress, and former BUST cover girl Chloë Sevigny is set to guest star on Portlandia's upcoming season. She’ll be playing Fred and Carrie’s roommate, and though we don’t know any further details about the role, it'll no doubt be hilarious. Maybe as a high-fashion hippie with a penchant for composting and a love of rigid recycling policies? Sevigny has appeared in too many ... Read More
If you’re lucky enough to live in the fabulous city of Portland, you could experience a perk other than having an adult-sleep away camp in the works for your fair city. The hit IFC show Portlandia is looking for season three extras. Call your oldest relative, because they’re looking for “everybody and their grandma” according to the call sheet. Portland’s bustling “hiking trails, backyard sustainable organic farms and basement ... Read More
We love Portlandia, so we were tickled by the new Entertainment Weekly-exclusive short Portlandia: Deam of the 1890s. I wonder how they get through their takes, 'cause I can't hold back the laugh-tears. I especially love Fred Armisen's faux-bearded face in this one, and Carrie is as hilarious as ever. This could easily apply to Brooklyn, too. Go ahead, watch: It's as if President McKinley never got assassinated. 'Portlandia': Go back to the 1890s ... Read More
Last night, the BUST staffers had a Ladies Night Out at the premiere party for Portlandia’s season 2. We have huge TV crushes on the IFC hit, and the second season way exceeded our expectations. The two new eps we watched at the party were packed with delightfully insane jokes, new characters (FYI, “We can pickle that!” is the new “Put a bird on it!”), and old pals like the aggressive bike messenger and feminist-bookstore owners. The blowout was held at ... Read More
