Femcees have a hard time in the hip-hop game. The industry seems to think that it can only acknowledge the work of one female rapper at a time--and each new one gets compared to Nicki Minaj, no matter how little the two have in common. Though female rappers are often treated shittily, talented new acts are popping onto the scene every day. One of my current favorites is Nitty Scott, a Brooklyn-based rapper who spits ridiculous, clever, and insightful bars. Watch ... Read More
Tell me you caught Nicki Minaj's performance at the Grammys. Tell me that I am not alone in labeling it a hot mess.  I love Nicki Minaj. As a feminist of color, I acknowledge all the problems that hip hop has with representing women, especially women of color (don't get me started on the "Stupid Hoe" music video). To be fair,  these problems exist in all artistic industries, from film (the recent Pariah vs. Redtails debate comes to mind) to ... Read More
Move over Nicki Minaj, because there’s another Nikki on the scene--Nikki Lynette.  The latter's song, “Shut The F*ck Up Boy,” might have the best chorus ever, and is currently being played on repeat here at the BUST HQ. Lynette’s got serious mc chops, a slight Left Eye vibe, and a dash of afro-punk style. We think she's a pure original, and a must-watch. Check the video out below and then go download her new mixtape, Roses ... Read More
Even a casual hip-hop fan can quote lyrics from Missy Elliott, TLC, and Salt-N-Pepa, but SHEmovement aims to celebrate not just the heavy-hitters, but less well-known lady mc's like Psalm One, Red Shaydez, Hot Yella, Miz Korona, and Lady Loe. The website features hip-hop-centric news and profiles of female rappers, as well as photos, videos, and blogs that the artists themselves update. The musicians on the site produce blends of hip-hop as diverse as they ... Read More
Can't get enough of hip hop? Neither can I, but of course, we as ladies, cant help but to notice that "the game" is dominated by mostly men. There have been some females that rocked a mic and represented for the girls in the past -Queen Latifah, Salt 'N' Peppa, Eve, and lest we forget, the self-proclaimed Harajuku Barbie herself, Nicki Minaj. But those are just some of the names that have been shining in the spotlight. Is lesser known hip hop more your ... Read More
It’s never been confirmed, but Nicki Minaj’s debut album Pink Friday sounds like a reference to the film Mean Girls, where the Plastics wore pink every Friday (maybe it was Wednesday). One may have nothing to do with the other, but on Nicki’s first album, she has a perfect balance of both mean and girly. While female rappers have spent decades swimming the mainstream in the hopes of never drowning, Nicki Minaj may have discovered the only working ... Read More
I love this new video from Nneka, the Nigerian-born, German-based singer and songwriter. She'll have a full length album, The Concrete, out in Feb 2010. Click here for tour dates and downloads. You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this ... Read More
