Though the Church of England has some notoriously anti-woman roots (Beheading of Anne Boleyn? Rejection of Queen Elizabeth?), this influential Anglican institution is slowly making its way into the 21st century.   As of yesterday, July 14, women can officially be ordained to serve as bishops in the Church of England. Nice! Delayed, but nice!! The vote was met with (almost) unanimity in the House of Bishops, which is a big step up from the 2012 vote - which ... Read More
On Sunday evening, every single bar I passed on New York’s Second Avenue was packed with both women and men, screaming at the top of their lungs and cheering for the USA in their World Cup match against Portugal. According to CNN, similar scenes were scattered across Iran this past Saturday. Restaurants were packed with fans - both women and men - who were excitedly cheering on their country’s team in the nail-biting match against ... Read More
The founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, Fred Phelps Sr., died of natural causes at 84-years-old on Wednesday, March 19th. Phelps and his small Topeka, Kansas-based congregation, which is largely comprised of his own extended family members, is best known for leading repugnant anti-gay protests at public events such as funerals of AIDS victims and deceased members of the armed forces. The church was founded in the 1950's and has been spewing nonsense for way ... Read More
Geena Davis has been increasing awareness on Hollywood sexism for over ten years with her foundation, the Institute on Gender in Media. The research-based institute has commissioned the largest body of information on gender in film and television ever gathered. And recently she took to the Hollywood Reporter's Women In Entertainment Power 100 issue with a guest column on the ways the film industry can improve itself and the world around it, published today ... Geena Davis is pretty much my hero, and we were thrilled to spot her hanging out around our BUST Craftacular space at Maker Faire this weekend. The actress has a long history of debunking female stereotypes in her films. In A League of Their Own she became a female athlete who made history; in Beetlejuice, she portrayed a warm, loving lady ghost who saved a teenage girl from being forced into a marriage with a demonic spirit. From her role in Thelma and ... Read More
What’s that, world? Women’s Equality Day was this Monday, and the Equal Rights Amendment still hasn’t passed? And pay discrimination is still legal? Huh, that's weird! These Disney princesses know what’s up with the gender gap, and sing about it in this awesome video:Watch out for gems like Ariel’s line, “It’s time to be paid for more than what’s in between our legs!” #tootrue This happy tune comes as an ... Ha ha, here’s something horrible from the state of Florida, ha. Salon a while back posted about a Florida man, Lazaro Sopena, who attempted to change his last name to his wife’s, in a neat-o reversal of gender norms. Cool! Sweet! Awesome! His wife, Hanh Dinh, is of Vietnamese heritage, and Sopena decided to honor her culture rather than keep his own last name, to which he has “no particular emotional ties,” he told Reuters. But wait. After ... Read More
I'm more than a little skeptical about a new study that asserts that the birth of a daughter and growing up with female siblings makes men more generous with their money. I can see how growing up with siblings in general makes  people, not just men, generous because they’ll be more inclined to share, but I don’t buy that all female children are more nurturing and soften all men in the household in general. And what happens to those that fall ... Read More
In another idiotic article by Fox News, Suzanne Venker continues to argue that feminism is a scary, evil monster destroying the American familial institution and all the happiness in the world. Discussing feminism’s role in the destruction of pre-1970s perfect marriages, she says, “Feminism didn’t result in equality between the sexes—it resulted in mass confusion. Today, men and women have no idea who’s supposed to do what.” ... Read More
In the past couple of years, the number of Americans who support same-sex marriage finally surpassed the number of those who oppose it.  Data was compiled by Pew Research Center. The numbers show that in 1996, 65% opposed it, while only 26% endorsed it.   New data collected this past October shows that 49% are actually in favor of it, and 40% oppose it (which is down 4 % from this past July).Still, those numbers widely vary in different regions of ...
