Beyoncé gave a major shoutout to our favorite dirty word, flashing “FEMINIST” in lights behind her during last night’s Video Music Awards performance. Text filled the screen for the sampling of novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TEDx Talk on embracing feminism, leaving no ambiguity that one of America’s biggest pop stars is indeed a gender right’s icon.
While much can be said about whether Beyoncé ... Read More

Rapper and former Terror Squad member Remy Ma wants to bring Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks and other female MCs for an 'Ill Chicks' album. We agree that album would be amazing. While still in jail, Remy Ma discussed sexism in hip hop in an interview with Funkmaster Flex:
“What I think happens with females in this game, they tend to allow other people to pit us against each other...It can be a thousand guys that’s putting out music ... Read More

Be still my gender non-conforming heart. We’ve recruited another human capable of flawlessly representing any and all genders to our secret cult. JK, there’s no cult. But Ruby Rose is totally queer, though, no JK about that.
Rose began her career as a model for Girlfriend magazine, moving on to MTV VJ-ing in 2008 after beating out 2000 other hopefuls for the spot. This opened the floodgates for Rose’s fame. She has ... Read More

Laverne Cox, star of Orange Is The New Black and activist for trans* rights, awareness and visibility is at work with Logo and MTV to produce a new documentary that will follow the lives of four transgendered teens and young adults between the ages of 14-24. This new film will proceed Cox’s previous production debut: a documentary on the life and case of CeCe McDonald, a TWOC that was arrested and charged with accidental murder after defending herself from a ... Though these days, it's almost difficult to imagine a world B.B. (Before Beyonce...), in honor of a news day so indebted to women who rock, yours truly has trawled the internet for lasting evidence of the power in a live performance. As MTV becomes a fond footnote in music history, as drum machines and auto-tune close in on the once-holy territory of the epic ballad, as Lady Gaga dons meat and Miley rides demolition equipment (I am clearly behind the times...) ... The old-as-time question of the feminist killjoy: Should I be enjoying this? I’ve found the answer is, typically, not really. Unless of course it’s 30 Rock, or Wanda Sykes standup.
Girl Code is the MTV show that echoes VH1’s I Love the 80’s/90's in set-up and production. The show provides a litany of interview sound bytes from a variety of funny women, and a couple of dudes for “the male perspective.” *eye roll*

Miley Cyrus can’t stop, and she won’t stop, and (let’s be honest) why should she? Before the controversial singer embarks on her 38-city tour promoting her #1 album “Bangerz,” she will appear in her own “MTV Unplugged” special. Not sure how to feel about it yet, but the poster is promising.
Over the past 25 years "Unplugged" has been the source of many iconic musical performances, showcasing super-star artists like ... Read More
I was a little girl when TLC came on the scene, and I wish someone had introduced my childhood self to the unbelievable R&B girl band. Sadly, I didn’t discover them until last year (while watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta, I’m embarrassed to admit). Band members Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Kandi Buruss are so talented; together, they create saucy, ... Read More

I don’t even own a TV, so it’s not really difficult for me to avoid 16 and Pregnant. However, even if my apartment was filled wall-to-wall with televisions (which would be a pretty weird decorating choice, but whatever), I’d probably avoid the hit MTV reality show. Admittedly, I have seen a few episodes, but I always find the show pretty tragic. When I do watch TV, I prefer something a bit more lighthearted, like 30 Rock, or Parks ... Read More

Thanks to the intrepid reporters over at New York Magazine, the truth to a long-held belief among many children of the 80's can finally be revealed. Toni Basil's "Mickey," the cheerleader-style video that was once a staple of MTV (back when it stood for "Music Television") does not contain references to being poked in the brown eye, despite the line "Come on and give it to me, any way you can. Any way you wanna do it, I'll take it like a man!"
As it turns out, ... Read More
