Oh Taylor Swift. I hated you during the onslaught of "Love Story;" hated your complete disregard for and desecration of literature ("Cause you were Romeo, I was the Scarlet Letter?" WHAT IS THAT? It. Doesn't. Make. Sense. Have you read either of those books? Do you know they both end badly and are completely inappropriate for the subject you're singing about? Do you know hundreds of young girls are going to read those books expecting some ... Read More

Despite the charms of the two boys behind me in the balcony yelling, "don't be a bitch" at various members of the band as they made banter with the audience, Wild Beasts expressed being *most* excited about the two NYC dates scheduled on their first ever tour of North America, which ends with their show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg tomorrow (2/28.) Coming all the way from their native UK, the boys travelled through Europe and Australia just to come here and ... Read More

In an effort to cut down on teenage smoking in France, an organization called Droits des Non-fumeurs (Non-smokers Rights) is launching a new ad campaign targeting young people. The tagline: "To smoke is to be a slave to tobacco." Innocent enough- it even makes sense. But apparently the only images they could think of to pair with the slogan are these ridiculously offensive images of young boys and girls sucking on the cigarette dicks of creepy ... Read More

Figure skating is one of those Olympic sports that draws a huge viewership. As such, it leads to a sense of rivalry in the fans (I still feel Michelle Kwan was robbed by Tara Lipinski in the ’98 Games, but that’s neither here nor there) but this year is one where everyone is worth rooting for.
Most discussed so far is probably Joannie Rochette—a second-time Olympian from Canada—whose mother died unexpectedly on Sunday. Despite this blow, ... Read More

This whole time, women haven’t been allowed to work on U.S. submarines.
But finally, the Pentagon is moving to end a ban that prohibits women from serving on these U.S. Navy underwater vessels, several media outlets are reporting. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates wrote a letter to Congress Friday requesting that it be reversed, and it looks like it’s happening.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus is a longtime supporter of the lift, telling the Daily Press ... Read More

So, basically, ladies getting stuff done and then going and winning Olympic medals. Clearly awesome.
Despite this group of awesome women’s success on the ice and off, some are calling ... Read More

Our writer, Erin Griffith, put on a happy face at the Mercury Lounge in NYC a few days ago while checking out the Dum Dum Girls. Here is her first hand account of the fun time she had. (I honestly don't know why I'm taking this tone with you right now.)
At the beginning of their set, Dee Dee, the band's lead singer, delivered her bubblegum lyrics as if she’d popped a handful of Valium. But as the set built up to the band’s faster ditties, the Dum Dum ... Read More
