You would never listen to the Screaming Females if you required calm — if you wanted to be reassured that the world is stable and the ground is level. But their fifth album, Ugly, manages to blend their signature eeriness with catchy, genre-spanning melodies to evoke something both deeply unnerving and intensely satisfying.  In the opener, “It All Means Nothing,” frontwoman Marissa Paternoster immediately grabs your attention with her ... Pussy Riot, who have quickly won over our feminist hearts here at BUST, staged yet another surprise performance yesterday--this time at Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral. In their usual attire of neon face-obscuring balaclavas (as well as neon everything else), they managed to slip past security long enough to play their song "Holy Shit." The obvious criticism of their performance was that it was planned for publicity's sake. Boris ... Read More
Without a doubt, my new favourite band ever. A feminist punk rock collective inspired by Bikini Kill writing anti-Putin songs (“Putin has pissed himself”) and performing in guerrilla-style costumes in Red Square itself. And to think, my colleagues in the music press used to scorn Riot Grrrl … From Big Think: The following story details how one group of girls have taken on Putin. Other revolutionaries take note. Here’s how you can do ... Read More
On December 13, 64 people were arrested at a punk show that was raising money for a local orphanage in the Aceh province of Indonesia. Those taken weren’t charged with a crime or brought before a court, but were arrested for having mohawks, tattoos, earrings, and wearing dark clothing. Basically for being “punk.” These men and women, most in their early twenties, were taken to the Aceh State Police School for “reeducation.” The Aceh ... Read More
What do you get when you take a man who sings about rebelling against authority and following your own rules and add a child to the mix? How does fatherhood change the ultimate bad ass lifestyle? What does it mean to be on tour and be a father? Those are just a few of the topics that the rock documentary, The Other F Word explores. In director, Andrea Blaugrund Nevins newest work she follows some of the most well known puck rock band members in their newest and ... Read More
I wasn't expecting to love ex-X-Ray Spex’s Poly Styrene's new release, My Virtual Boyfriend, quite as much as I do. By the unfortunate mathematics of aging and rock'n'roll, it's rare that a past their prime rocker releases new and relevant material. The fireball that is Ms. Poly Styrene has failed to disappoint. The single is a far cry from the fierce caterwaul of 1977's Oh Bondage! Up Yours!.  The energy's different: it's frenetic, disorganized, and ... Read More
Daytime soap dramas have got nothing on Screeching Weasel. Over the years Weasel has cast bandmates like they were going out of season, with over 20 people having a claim to Weasel fame. With a history as volatile as one of their own mosh pits, Screeching Weasel fans had to forget about venting their disgruntled 90’s youth after the band went on hiatus back in 2004. That is until now, the Weasel will Screech again!! And of course featuring a whole new ... Read More
Found this awesome video of Patti Smith on an episode of the late-70's/early-80's TV show "Kids are People Too," via Lesley's blog who found it on Kathleen's blog. I love how Patti explains punk rock by saying that "Rock 'n roll's gettin' back in the hands of the people, it belongs to the kids again, not the big business guys" and the host just kind of mumbles in response, "We can go for that, I think..." Also, what kind of a kid wants to be a missionary when they ... Read More
