Slut Walk NYC is a grassroots mission doing its part to end sexual and domestic violence to women all around the globe. The movement grew from a comment by a police officer who told women the best way to protect themselves against sexual violence would be to stop dressing like sluts. Understandably outraged, over 3000 women exercised their rights to free assembly and speech and marched to show support for the end of discrimination. Marches are now world wide with ... Read More
Did you know that up until recently there was a five year statute of limitations on a rapist in New York State? Until 2006 charges of rape had to be reported within five years or there could be no prosecution. This was one of the many facts that I learned about rape at a recent Pace University lecture. I was fortunate enough to attend a National Organization for Women panel discussion on the subject of rape last Wednesday and my eyes were opened. The lecture was ... Read More

In Liberia, rape has become a standard procedure, used as a tool of oppression and to instill fear. From 1989 to 2003, the Liberian civil war used mass rape as an element of warfare, affecting 3 out of 4 young girls and women.  Although the war ended, the rape epidemic still continues in Liberia and has shattered the social norms of the community.  Even after almost 8 years, women continue to live in fear and continue to be victims of ... Oh man, I know this is old, but I needed to post this genius sketch by Kristen Schaal and John Stewart from last week. Kristen stops by the Daily Show to school Stewart on the "rainbow of rape's" and explains how the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act should cut funding for abortions unless they are a result of "forcible" rape. While I laughed out loud, it is sad to know that many people in this country would agree with her outrageous claims of "rapish" rape not ... Read More
Apparently I was unaware that there is a difference between rape, and “forcible” rape. I apologize for my ignorance – how was I to know that the word “no” isn’t an onomatopoeia? Thank you ever so much, Chris Smith, for informing me! Golly gee, how silly I feel now that I stand corrected that women should not be eligible for federal assistance for abortion in rape cases unless she’s bruised or has had a bone ... Read More
Last week, the young men pledging to Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity at Yale were blind-folded in the middle of the night and sent to march in front of the dorms on Old Campus, where most of the first year women are housed, and chant such things as, "No means yes! Yes means anal!" and "My name is Jack, I'm a necrophiliac, I f-ck dead women and fill them with my semen." Their actions were met with righteous outrage, with a statement issued by the Yale Women's ... Read More
The BBC reported last week on a case in Israel where a man has been convicted of rape because the woman he had sex with learned after the fact he was not Jewish, but Arab. The judge deemed it "rape by deception" and cited another case where a man posed as a neurosurgeon in order to sleep with a woman and later was convicted of fraud. But fraud is not rape. According to reports filed by the woman, the two met in a public street then later that day ... Read More
South African Dr. Sonnet Ehlers has created what she sees as a new weapon of defense for women against what is said to be one of the highest rape rates in the world. The device is Rape-aXe, a female condom with "teeth." The hooks inside are designed to latch on during unwanted penetration so that, “it hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it’s on… If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter... however, it doesn't break the skin, and ...
