In case there was any doubt left in our minds that Republican lawmakers viewed women as little more than baby vessels, this week Arizona's Senate passed what they're calling a "wrongful birth" bill. This legislation allows doctors to opt out of informing pregnant women about prenatal complications because such information could lead to an abortion, a totally legal medical procedure. In addition, if shit hits the fan (you know, like the expectant mother dies) as a ... Read More

Late last month, 800 battleground state voters were asked how they felt about Congress's war on women, and the results are in: they're pissed off!
Among those polled in 8 battleground states, a near consensus exists that women should have access to birth control, that insurers should cover it, and that the decision to use birth control is a private one. Kind of a no brainer, considering nearly every woman will use some form of contraceptive in her ... Read More

We've been following the growing controversy in Virginia regarding HB1, the so-called "personhood" bill, and SB 484, which requires women to undergo an invasive ultrasound if they are seeking an abortion. These pieces of legislation are drawing national attention, even in the current pervasive climate of assault on women's rights, and on Saturday, March 3 in Richmond, Virginia, citizens took to the capitol steps to protest. According to the Richmond ... Read More

Today the Senate shut down Sen. Roy Blunt's controversial amendment which would allow any employer the right to refuse coverage for any health service in conflict with their religious beliefs. The debate centered around women's health, namely contraception, and brought us that lovely all-male hearing on the issue and a lot of ungrounded slut shaming from conservative pundits. Most Democrats and Republican Olympia Snowe voted no on the measure, citing ... Read More

Off-color? Possibly. Inappropriate for an elected official? Maybe. Absolutely awesome? Definitely.
At a personhood rally at the Oklahoma Capitol on Tuesday, Senator Judy Eason McIntyre of Tulsa, earned an audible “You go, girl!” from yours truly when she held up a sign reading, “If I wanted the government in my womb I'd fuck a senator.”
Senator McIntyre didn’t bring the sign to the rally herself, but stated that when she saw it, she ... Read More

Recently Virginia lawmakers threw their hat in the race for Worst State to be a Woman In when they introduced anti-choice legislation. People across the state responded on Monday, February 20th, when over 1,200 people gathered on the Capitol grounds in silent protest. Despite that message, this week the House of Delegates passed SB 484, legislation which will force women seeking an abortion to undergo an expensive and medically unnecessary (not to mention ... We all hopefully know men who don't think they have the right to make decisions for us (reproductive or otherwise). Some of us even know men brave enough to call themselves feminists. But these men aren't the ones in the news. Women are speaking out against the injustices of having male politicians decide what's right for their bodies; but we're not beyond calling for the help of men who also believe that we have the right to make our own decisions. ... Now that women's birth control is becoming a subject of contention among (mostly male) Republicans in Congress, it seems only fair that birth control for men be put under the same scrutiny. At least this is what a group of female Georgia legislators in the House of Representatives believe--so they've just proposed a bill that would ban men from getting vasectomies.Of course, the proposal of this bill was a response to something more specific than the ... Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell has changed his stance on the recent controversial bill that would have required women getting abortions to first have a transvaginal ultrasound.
McDonnell must have felt the heat from opponents after he was sent a petition containing over 33,000 signatures urging him to veto the bill.
“Mandating an invasive procedure in order to give informed consent is not a proper role for the state,” said McDonnell according to ... Read More

On the website for Planned Parenthood's new action fund, the answer to "Why We're Watching" reads: "This past year, we have been witnessing the most aggressive legislative attacks on women’s health and rights in a generation." Year. It's been a year. I remember blogging about the beginnings of the right-wing attack on Planned Parenthood a year ago. I remember going to the rally that was the first response to those attacks a year ago. It seemed like ... Read More
