Recently Virginia lawmakers threw their hat in the race for Worst State to be a Woman In when they introduced anti-choice legislation. People across the state responded on Monday, February 20th, when over 1,200 people gathered on the Capitol grounds in silent protest. Despite that message, this week the House of Delegates passed SB 484, legislation which will force women seeking an abortion to undergo an expensive and medically unnecessary (not to mention ... We all hopefully know men who don't think they have the right to make decisions for us (reproductive or otherwise). Some of us even know men brave enough to call themselves feminists. But these men aren't the ones in the news. Women are speaking out against the injustices of having male politicians decide what's right for their bodies; but we're not beyond calling for the help of men who also believe that we have the right to make our own decisions. ... Now that women's birth control is becoming a subject of contention among (mostly male) Republicans in Congress, it seems only fair that birth control for men be put under the same scrutiny. At least this is what a group of female Georgia legislators in the House of Representatives believe--so they've just proposed a bill that would ban men from getting vasectomies.Of course, the proposal of this bill was a response to something more specific than the ... Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell has changed his stance on the recent controversial bill that would have required women getting abortions to first have a transvaginal ultrasound.
McDonnell must have felt the heat from opponents after he was sent a petition containing over 33,000 signatures urging him to veto the bill.
“Mandating an invasive procedure in order to give informed consent is not a proper role for the state,” said McDonnell according to ... Read More

On the website for Planned Parenthood's new action fund, the answer to "Why We're Watching" reads: "This past year, we have been witnessing the most aggressive legislative attacks on women’s health and rights in a generation." Year. It's been a year. I remember blogging about the beginnings of the right-wing attack on Planned Parenthood a year ago. I remember going to the rally that was the first response to those attacks a year ago. It seemed like ... Read More

This picture aptly summarizes precisely what is wrong with the on-going reproductive rights debate in America. This is a panel put together by Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee which is holding a circus hearing titled “Lines Crossed: Separation of Church and State. Has the Obama Administration Trampled on Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Conscience?” today. Notice how not a single person on ... Read More

Add Virginia to the list of states where lawmakers want to make it easier to be a fertilized egg than a woman. Rather than focusing on education or job creation in light of the worst recession since the 1930's, yet another state legislature has turned its energy and resources against our inalienable right to choose what happens inside our own bodies.
The Virginia House of Delegates passed two controversial anti-choice bills, sending them to the Senate. ... Read More

In "Well, That Was Inevitable" news, Rick Perry announced today that he's dropping his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. His campaign started out strong but faded fast after the politician's dismal performances in debates where it seemed like he couldn't remember the basic bullet points of his platform or form complete sentences.
After his homophobic-rant of a campaign ad disgusted Americans from all ends of the political spectrum earlier this ... Read More

Save the Brooklyn Birthing Center! The Brooklyn Birthing Center is the only one of its kind in the entire state of New York. Recently it has come under grave threat, as Medicaid has just cut its funding. If the funding does not become reinstated, the center will be forced to close. This would limit pregnant women who wanted to give birth at the center to only hospitals or their homes. Medicaid’s reimbursement rate to the Brooklyn Birthing ... Read More

A federal judge has blocked key parts of a Texas abortion law that would require doctors to provide a sonogram to pregnant women before they go through with the procedure. As written, the law would require women seeking an abortion in Texas to view a picture of the embryo or fetus and hear a description of its development before having the procedure. It was to take effect on September 1.
U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks found several portions of ... Read More
