International tabloids have long since spun the story of Nafissatou Diallo into so much gossip gold. Diallo, an African immigrant working as a maid at the Sofitel in Manhattan, was thrust into the glaring media spotlight after an unfortunate encounter with Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Diallo attests that DSK assaulted her in his hotel room while she was on the clock, forcing her to perform oral sex on him. As one of the most powerful men in France (if not the world) ... Read More

In an extremely personal and honest new song, Angel Haze comes clean: she raps about being repeatedly sexually abused as a child by more than one attacker. Distressingly, when she told others about it, they either wouldn’t believe her or placed the blame on her.
The assault she dealt with during her upbringing obviously caused a lot of pain - both physical and mental. “I was afraid of myself, I had no love for ... Read More

For the latest in college rape news, we turn to Amherst College in Massachusetts. On Wednesday, Angie Epifano, a former Amherst student, published a heartbreaking 5,000-word account of her on-campus rape and its aftermath.
After Epifano was raped on May 25, 2011, the Amherst administration completely failed her. Epifano was not allowed to change dorms and was pressured to not press charges. When she went to the counseling center to talk about how scared she ... Read More

We all know the famous 1945 photo of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square, celebrating the end of WWII. But though we’ve seen it on countless posters and T-shirts and purses and mousepads, it is not what it appears to be.
Feminist blog Crates & Ribbons posted a piece titled "The Kissing Sailor, or, 'The Selective Blindness of Rape Culture,'" in which the author observes that what the photo really shows is not romance but sexual ... Read More

The New York Court of Appeals seems to think that subway masturbators are no big deal.
Last year, a man who masturbated and ejaculated on three different female subway passengers was tracked down through DNA evidence. The man, Darnell Hardware, is now out free after only one year in prison — for time served — because the Court of Appeals considers masturbating and ejaculating on someone without their consent a misdemeanor, not a felony, Gothamist ... Whether you’re a frequent partygoer or you just hit the bar once a month, sexual assault is a stark reality and it can happen to anyone. In the United States alone, a woman is sexually assaulted every two minutes, according to the U.S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey. And frequently, a rapist is someone the victim is acquainted with, like a new date who slips a drug into round two of cocktails.
To fight the harrowing statistics, ... Read More

Recently, the media created a conversation about whether or not rape jokes are funny, or even acceptable. It was a discussion in our office, and I'm sure in many others. What we all can agree on, despite our sense of humor, is that rape is one of the most traumatizing crimes. Those closest to the victim are often the perpetrators of rape, just as complete strangers can forever darken the lives of others with rape as well. Why is it so common? The new ... Read More

Update: Defense attorneys for the two teenage boys have officially withdrawn their motion to hold Savannah in contempt for tweeting her attackers' names after the case gained worldwide recognition. Phew!
Upset by what she felt was a lenient plea bargain for two teen boys who plead guilty to assaulting her and circulating pictures of the incident, 17-year-old Savannah Dietrich turned to Twitter to share her frustration.
“There you go, lock me ... Read More

You know the drill. You’re going on a date or to a party with someone new, so you overzealously tell your friends as much information as you can (name and phone number of your date, where you’re going) in case you end up in a sticky situation, and promise to text them when you get home safely. Since college, my friends and I have been using this system to keep us as safe as possible, but of course, this plan is far from foolproof. Nearly one in five ... Read More

Spirit Airlines has landed in hot water over their response to a sexual assault claim that happened to a female passenger aboard a flight earlier this month. On August 23rd 2011, Dana LaRue fell asleep on board a flight leaving Los Angeles and awoke to find a fellow passenger fondling her. “I woke up to find him pressed up against my arm, one hand on my leg, the other hand fumbling around my breasts.”
