Trigger Warning: This post contains a description of sexual assault that may be triggering for survivors.
There has been a lot of victim blaming going around in the past few weeks, and it’s time for it to stop. First, a 14-year-old child was raped by her teacher, and the judge trying the case let her attacker off with a thirty day jail sentence because he felt that the girl was mature enough to have sex with an adult and was ... You would think that a woman who stepped forward to protect herself from an abusive ex-husband would be supported by her community. Tragically, that often isn’t the case. Carie Charlesworth (pictured above) experienced a terrible instance of victim-blaming by the hands of her employers, Holy Trinity School. Her punishment? Losing her job.
How did this gross injustice happen? Charlesworth called the police three times after her violent ... Read More

Things are not good for Sweetness O’Hara. A shy, studious girl in a rough neighborhood, Sweetness (the captivating Zöe Kravitz) is bullied at school and alternately abused and ignored by her alcoholic father and mentally ill mother. In today's edition of Things That Elicit Mixed Emotions, I present Thomas Czarnecki's photoseries "From Enchantment to Down". The haunting images depict Disney princesses meeting tragic ends. Ariel is beached on the shore, Sleeping Beauty lies abandoned on the floor of what appears to be a drug den, and Pocahontas is slung over a hunter's shoulder in his room of taxidermic trophies. I hope Czarnecki is making a statement about ... Read More

Slut Walk NYC is a grassroots mission doing its part to end sexual and domestic violence to women all around the globe. The movement grew from a comment by a police officer who told women the best way to protect themselves against sexual violence would be to stop dressing like sluts. Understandably outraged, over 3000 women exercised their rights to free assembly and speech and marched to show support for the end of discrimination. Marches ... Read More

Not to put a damper on anyone’s day, but I wanted to touch on the recent controversy surrounding Glee star Heather Morris' and photographer Tyler Shields' new photo shoot. The images show the blonde in a polka-dotted dress surrounded by household appliances, clearly as a Barbie doll figure. That’s not the controversial part. She sports a black eye in the photos as well. Looking through Mr. Shields’ work one can see Morris' ... Read More
