In spite of losing two of their band mates in the past year, John Ptacek and Andy Cobb of The Itchy Hearts have managed to put out an impressive second album titled 'Do Ya Best'.  The tracks combine Dylan-esque folk with elements of bluegrass, zydeco, and even a little punk. Even those who normally steer clear of this type of music can find themselves swept up in the ruckus.     The Itchy Hearts will be on a tour of the US this Summer. Check the ... Read More
Joan Jett is back in the public eye with the release of The Runaways movie in March of this year, but the movie only captures a small portion of this rock-and-roll heavyweight’s epic and impressive career.  Thankfully, Todd Oldham has released a beautiful and well-rounded monograph of the legendary artist, aptly titled, Joan Jett.  Oldham compiles over thirty years of photos, interviews, and other unreleased ephemera in over 200 pages into a linear ... Our writer Ned Hepburn took time out from being a man about town in his home base of Los Angeles to conduct a phone interview with Ellen Allien about her music and fashion ventures. Here is the result of that very interview. I'm not going to lie. Ellen sounded like she was unwinding; the kind of unwinding one might do after staring at a computer for eight hours a day. Some might look at this like "hey, Ellen's unwinding." Others might look at it like ... Read More
Once you have reached the zenith of fame and become an international household name, then who’s to say you shouldn’t have a go at a whole new career? You know, indie pop siren to low-down dirty DJ. Well, maybe Björk isn’t planning an entirely new redirect, but she sure will twist some vinyl with Alex Ross and Brandon Stosuy of Stereogum in the name of charity. Last night in Brooklyn, hundreds of fans flooded the Escher-like labyrinth of ... Read More
Legendary poet rocker Patti Smith was the featured guest at last night’s installment of the Live from the New York Public Library series in Manhattan, and the evening was nothing short of magical. There to promote her new memoir, Just Kids, Smith had a spirited chat with moderator Paul Holdengräber, performed three gorgeous acoustic numbers, and even stuck around afterward to sign books and chat with the sold-out crowd. During the interview portion, ... Read More
Many many years ago I took a trip to Olympia, Washington for the purpose of seeing the rock opera The Transfused. I stayed in Olympia for ten days and had a great time (The Transfused was awesome and Wynne Greenwood sat next to me during the show and offered me a stick of gum,) but the highlight of the trip was walking down some random street and seeing Rachel Carns, formerly of The Need, walking towards me toweling her wet hair, having just come from the local ... Our writer Aurora Montgomery went to the Elvis Perkins in Dearland show at the Bell House in Brooklyn last week and fell madly in love with the band. (One member in particular.) Here is a review of the show that got Aurora so twitterpated:Elvis Perkins took the stage sans In Dearland (his accompanying band) and started strumming an acoustic guitar and singing quietly into his microphone. The room was dark, the crowd was quiet and transfixed; all eyes were forward ... Read More
Found this awesome video of Patti Smith on an episode of the late-70's/early-80's TV show "Kids are People Too," via Lesley's blog who found it on Kathleen's blog. I love how Patti explains punk rock by saying that "Rock 'n roll's gettin' back in the hands of the people, it belongs to the kids again, not the big business guys" and the host just kind of mumbles in response, "We can go for that, I think..." Also, what kind of a kid wants to be a missionary when they ... Read More
