Found this awesome video of Patti Smith on an episode of the late-70's/early-80's TV show "Kids are People Too," via Lesley's blog who found it on Kathleen's blog.
I love how Patti explains punk rock by saying that "Rock 'n roll's gettin' back in the hands of the people, it belongs to the kids again, not the big business guys" and the host just kind of mumbles in response, "We can go for that, I think..." Also, what kind of a kid wants to be a missionary when they ... Read More

Our writer Aurora Montgomery went to the Dosh show at Union Hall in Brooklyn last week and wrote all about it. Here it is!Dosh is comprised of Martin Luther King Chavez Dosh and Michael Lewis. Together they play a myriad of instruments looped and layered on top of each other, building a beautiful hybrid of electronic, improvisational jazz and pop music. I was able to see them last Thursday in the dark and intimate underbelly of Brooklyn’s Union ... Read More

Friday is now twice as nice because MIA released a new track today called "Born Free." The sound is a slight departure from her earlier albums as it loses the drum-machine, beat produced sound, and instead opts for a punk-rock, fuzzed out riff and reverbed vocals. We love it!

Her much awaited album is coming out June 29th of this year. This song will hold us over for a little while, but we'll be needing ... Read More

Ever since hearing about indie-pop outfit Twin Sister earlier in the year, I haven't gone many days without reading a new article or blog post about them. Whether talking about their new EP, Color Your Life, or their many shows (they were just on tour with Xiu Xiu and tUnE-YarDs), the New York based five piece has been garnering rave reviews from the likes of Pitchfork and Brooklyn Vegan. And for good reason. I had the chance to see them play (and ... Read More

Have you ever watched a video of Kaki King playing guitar? It's kind of insane. Her fingers move so fast across the strings, and yet she makes it all look so easy breezy. I've spent the majority of my morning today listening to her fifth release, Junior, which Rounder Records released on April 13th, and it's really making me want to take up guitar lessons again. A little more rock than 2008's Dreaming of Revenge, this album opens with "The Betrayer" which ... Read More

Critics and fans alike have been itching to hear something new in the Rap genre for years, and New Orleans has stepped up to the plate to deliver. Turns out that Louisiana has been a hip-hop incubator for the past decade; dotingly cultivating a set of grade-A chicks, dudes and chick-dudes. Well, the veritable golden egg has hatched and the artists of Sissy Bounce are shouting out, "I'm ready! And I'm tellin' ... Read More

The incomparable Jon Spencer Blues Explosion are playing a rare gig this Friday at Brooklyn Bowl! It's gonna be epic so get your tickets now.
The Blues Explosion was formed way back in 1991 by Jon Spencer (Pussy Galore), along with bassist Russell Simins and Judah Baker. The Blues Explosion is real, tear your hair out, flip your wig rock 'n roll, not for the faint of heart. I've seen these guys play plenty of times, and they are true showmen, they ... Read More

In Best Coast's latest video, "When I'm With You," Bethany Cosentino's spacey, fuzzed out brand of surf rock (or glo-fi, if that's what you want to call it) is accompanied by scenes of her having a romantic day at the beach with none other than America's favorite fast food clown. Playful and funny, the video is sure to brighten your day.
For more Best Coast, be sure to grab her latest 7" Far Away which will be available for free with purchase of ... Read More
