Singer-songwriter extraordinaire, Patty Griffin, releases a new album today of Inspirational material called Downtown Church (Credential/EMI). I’m lovin’ it so much that I need to testify to you all about how great it is. Let’s face it, not alot of white girls (the great Neko Case aside) can sing this type of material and pull it off but, but then again, they ain’t Patty Griffin. The songs found here run the gamut from hymn style ... Read More

Melissa Auf der Maur has spent the last five years working on her second solo album, Out of Our Minds, and she will totally punch your lights out if you let it leak before the March 23rd release date. She told me as much, and much more, during an early afternoon phone call where we touched on such topics as aliens, David Lynch, and the "C word."And by "C word," I mean Courtney. Melissa is probably most known for having spent five years playing bass for Hole, as ... Read More

Oh that's right.
On the last day of March, the New-York-Post-canonized "Our Lady of Perpetual Motion" will release recordings from her 2008 "Sticky and Sweet" global concert tour on DVD and CD. The video portion was filmed over four days in Buenos Aires, and also includes backstage footage from other stops around the world.

Okkervil River took a break from their year long lull in touring to perform with Levon Helm at the NYC venue Terminal 5 last week. Seeing Okkervil as an opening band can be disappointing because their sets are over in what feels like seconds, and even when the band is headlining a performance there is never enough time once you’re immersed in their songs and the stories within them. The band took the stage at 8pm on the dot and played a solid forty-five ... Read More

I would say that I listen to about 30+ different bands on any given week, and to be quite frank, most of them sort of bleed right into the next. I like to sit at my desk and listen to each new CD that comes into the BUST office with care, in its entirety, and then at the end I will make my evaluation by taping a little note to the cover that says something like, "this sounds like farts," or, "this is decent, but in an annoying way." When pressed to define ... Read More

Any band that cites Madonna’s first album as a major influence is gonna get a listen from me. And in the case of the forthcoming EP from Class Actress (it hits ears Feb. 9), another and another and another. After totally falling for the Brooklyn trio’s throwback synthiness and lead singer Elizabeth Harper, who has a voice like buttah, I had to check them out at the Highline Ballroom last night, where they opened for Au Revoir Simone. They took the ... Read More

OMG, Jane Fonda twittered this and I missed it? "Sean Penn brought Mickey Avalon (@mickeyave) to our xmas party. He sang "Do The Jane Fonda" and I danced. Fun!!!" How awesome would it have been to witness this glorious meeting? Wow. Also, very excited to hear that Mickey will have a new CD out this year on Interscope- Can't wait!
