As fans of girl rock (durr!) we're super excited about the launch of Brit website thegirlsare.com's first ever print issue of TGA, to complement its up-to-the-minute content online. After growing tired of finding music magazines in the 'men's interest' section, Editor Annette Barlow decided to do something about it. And how glad are we that she did? TGA will finally offer a real alternative to the male-dominated music press here in the ... Read More

Despite a year of lows for women in the media, there were several ladies smashing the patriarchy in the music business this year. Here are some of our favorites!
Batches and Cookies – Lizzo feat. Sophia ErisThis video has it all. Badass ladies riding motorcycles? Check. Queer pride? Check. Baked goods? Check. Check. Check. Lizzo and Sophia Eris are incredibly talented lyricists whose clever bars will have you hooked after one listen. The video ... Read More
What did you do last night? Did you go to bed early? That's cute. While you were sleeping, Beyoncé dropped a new album on all of our heads, complete with 17 music videos and a song "featuring Blue Ivy," thus eliminating the need for Christmas this year and forever, because now we have a new holiday on December 13, and it's called Beyuletide.
Her fifth LP is titled Beyoncé, which of course, because why would you call an album anything else ... Read More
After a fifteen-year break, Yuki C. Honda and Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto are returning with their first album since 1999’s hit Stereo Type A with LP Hotel Valentine. You might remember the awesome pair from BUST Magazine’s 20th Anniversary Extravaganza. Included on the album is the ecstatic and ineffable song "MFN," with a video by Georgia. In addition to the super-ladies, album guests include Reggie Watts, Glenn Kotche, Mauro Refosco, and Nels ... Read More

One of our favorite rockers is back with a new album and really awesome hair: St. Vincent's fourth and upcoming self-titled album is set to be released in the US on February 25th. Just yesterday, "Birth in Reverse," the first single from the album, descended upon the world like a magnificent rain of metallic sequins and sardonic rawness with driving percussion and a catchy hook.
Annie Clark, the woman behind the music, explained her thought process for the ... Read More

After playing with the Pixies for 25 years, bassist Kim Deal called it quits in June of this year. Her replacement, Kim Shattuck, is lead singer and guitarist of The Muffs, and previous member of The Pandoras. Recently, Shattuck was reportedly "let go without explanation" from the group earlier this month. Why you would ever give up the magic of Kim Shattuck? Who knows! Not even Kim Shattuck!
Now, The Pixies are hopefully going to break the Kim Kurse with ... Read More

The music industry is a wacky place that just seems to get wackier every day. Being a DIY-driven artist in a corporate world sounds more like a path to grey hair than to success. But in 2011, a few brave souls organized a completely DIY national tour, titled "Check Yo Ponytail." The 20 dates featured the talents of Spank Rock, Big Freedia, Pictureplane, The Death Set, and the mastermind behind it all: Franki Chan.
Franki Chan and his partner Danny Johnson ... Read More

Rose Windows is much more than a “psychedelic” rock band. This septet fuses folk, jazz, and blues to craft a sound that shows off the Seattleites’ penchant for weird-wave instrumentation and haunting group harmonies. Rabia Qazi provides soaring, soulful vocals alongside Veronica Dye who plays one mean flute. Their debut LP The Sun Dogs was released in June on ultimate indie label Sub Pop, and features some strange, epic ballads reminiscent of ‘60s and ... Read More
Angel Olsen is a Chicago-based singer songwriter, and her 2012 album Half Way Home got a LOT of play in my apartment last year. Check her out on Spotify if you enjoy Patsy Cline, Bonnie "Prince" Billy (she’s toured with him), or beautiful folk songs about restless wandering and dudes who don’t call. If you get the chance to see her live, do—she played Pitchfork Music Festival last summer and managed to turn day-drunk festival goers into a mostly ... Read More
