I'm really loving the new TV Series, "Up All Night." I think it sort of has the potential to be kind of a 30 Rock, but about parenting. The show has a fantastic cast: Christina Applegate, demonstrating her great comedic abilities; Mr. Amy Poehler, Will Arnett; and our beloved Maya Rudolph as a sort of cross between Oprah and Tracy Jordan. And the fact that the show is written by a woman doesn't hurt, either. To get a sense of her character's nuttiness, check out ... Read More
Most people who indulge in shows like The Bachelor and Jersey Shore don't take them seriously. In fact, most people I know who watch reality TV, watch it  almost sadistically, as they are enjoying the act of hating it. New Research from the Girl Scout Institute is proving that these popular TV shows may have more of an effect than we may think. The study took middle school and high school aged girls and asked reality tv viewers and non viewers questions ... Read More
I've recently been obsessed with watching videos of the Longboard Girls Crew. I don't longboard but, these women are just too cool! They carve and slide (check out my fancy terminology!) through the streets with ease, grace, and lots of style. Different from typical skateboarding, longboarding isn't as aggressive, but these girls make it seem like more of an art form rather than a sport. The girls are based in Spain, though there are other sub-groups in other ... Read More
You’ve read the interview with Jennifer Siebel Newsom in our Mindy Kaling issue, you’ve heard about the documentary here on our blog, now’s your chance to see the important documentary, Miss Representation, when it premieres on the Oprah Winfrey OWN Network on October 20th!  The documentary delves into the damaging effects of pervasive media which depicts objectifying, negative images of women.  It's a problem that’s right ... Revenge is Sweet

Back in the Spring 2002 “Fight Like a Girl” Issue of BUST, I wrote a feature celebrating flicks about girls getting even. Some of my favorite movies of all time made the list, including Carrie, Nine to Five, and Heathers. And I was reminded again recently what great fodder the young woman + payback formula really is when I received a press screener of the aptly named new ABC drama Revenge*. Premiering Wednesday, September 21 (10/9 C), the show ... Read More
I have a big popcorn bowl ready for a History Detectives segment on Tuesday, September 20th (PBS, 8-9 ET). This episode, which focuses on women's suffrage, is worth watching because it’s rare that women’s history gets much play on national TV.  The History Detectives program on September 20th features Yvonne Blemly Crumlish and probes the mystery of her grandmother Addie's suffrage pennant that Yvonne's father gave her 30 years ago. Yvonne ... Read More
Television has always been a place for creative women. This fall alone there is a slew of new female-centric shows from the adorkable comedy The New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel to the Maria Bello ass-kicking cop drama based on the original BBC series Prime Suspect to the controversial The Playboy Club, which ... I don’t know why, exactly, I watch TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras, but I cannot look away. There is a part of me that wants to boycott the show, to make sure that beauty pageants get not a cent more of my money or a second more of my time; there is also a part of me that acknowledges that these little girls (and occasionally, boys) are our future, and feels responsible for them.  There are moments on Toddlers & Tiaras that make me certain I will ... Everyone knows that the main reason we have the internet is to watch cat videos. But do you know how those videos are made? In this documentary short, the talented men and women of Kittywood Studios give you a behind-the-scenes look at the process -- from script writing, to animatics, to the final, unforgettable product (you've probably already seen the amazingly realistic work they did in their hit, "Surprised Kitty"). Great work, guys! Can't wait to see what ... Read More
According to recent reports by Reuters and others, a yellow baboon has adopted a bush baby in an animal orphanage in Nairobi, and the  baboon is caring for the bush baby as if it is her own child. The baboon carries the bush baby around wherever it goes, and the two happily share meals together. At least, that's one way of looking at it. Watch the video for yourself (and please do enjoy the outrageously wonderful accent of the Kenyan newscaster), and see ... Read More
