At my place it's important to play Christmas music at all times to remind me to get in that holiday spirit! This year, The Raveonettes have dropped a dreamy Xmas ditty--appropriately titled "The Christmas Song"--to sum up everyone's mood about the "most wonderful time of the year." All I need now is a warm blanket and some hot chocolate... You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this ... Read More
The weather is getting colder and the ultimate cuddle buddy is primed for its comeback: a book! Sometimes, a girl wants one to stretch the horizons of her brain (and not just her heartstrings--I'm talking about you Harper Collins Romance!), so it's great that books like New Art/Science Affinities exist.  The book, co-published by Carnegie Mellon University's Miller Gallery and the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, is 190 pages of contemporary art focusing on ... Some new music is about to make its grand entrance into your iTunes. The electro/pop duo We Were Lovers hits us with their song "We've Got It." The track, as well as being a teaser for an album that won't be coming out until Spring 2012 (cry!), will feel right at home among all those old '80s tunes you've got stored away. Aren't they cute?! Listen and download (fo' FREE)!   New Yorkers, you can catch this dashing duo tomorrow night at The Rock ... Read More
The creators of gothic lolita, harajuku, and ganguro are back! But, this time more  laid back and adventure-y. Don't worry though, they're still plenty kawaii and filled with all the layers and patterns we know, admire, and love. Of course, I'm talking about a new trend in Japan called Yama Girls. No, no it's not a mass of leather clad Japanese girls on Yamaha motorcycles zipping around Tokyo,(though that would be awesome!), this style ditches all the bells ... I'm just going to assume that in this day and age many of you have iPhones. And so, in saying that many of you know of the little and totally awesome (not to mention, totally FREE) app Instagram. For absolutely nothing you can make all your iPhone pics look like vintage perfection without the hassle of transferring and loading into photoshop and filters and blah. Plus, you get to share it with the world! All good and snazzy, except you really really like those ... Read More
Daniel Handler, better known by the pen name Lemony Snicket and beloved author of the delightfully depressing "A Series of Unfortunate Events", is just one of the many (no seriously, there are SO many) authors that's showing their support for Occupy Wall Street on the Occupy Writers site. While the goal of the whole protest is broad and at times hazy, Snicket doesn't hesitate to draw his own conclusions on what's going in his signature witty charm. Whether you're ... Read More
Japan is always releasing cool things, but probably one of the coolest and trippiest is Hatsune Miku--Hatsu (first), Ne (sound), and Miku (future) is a name meaning "the first sound from the future". Miku is a Japanese Pop idol and she isn't even real! But, that doesn't stop her from having sold out concerts in Japan, L.A., and an upcoming concert in Singapore. She sings, she dances, and she does all this with an awesome set of flowing aquamarine pig tails. ... When I went on a class trip to Dumbo back in 2009 and saw the work of "yarn bomber" Olek (at the time unknown to me), I didn't think that the strange art--people in crocheted body suits-- would become the subject of much talk today. The crafty vandal is popping up all over the city (not to mention, the world!) with her colorful works of art that's stitched around everything from bikes and cars to people to the Wall Street bull! What's gotten her name on the ... I've recently been obsessed with watching videos of the Longboard Girls Crew. I don't longboard but, these women are just too cool! They carve and slide (check out my fancy terminology!) through the streets with ease, grace, and lots of style. Different from typical skateboarding, longboarding isn't as aggressive, but these girls make it seem like more of an art form rather than a sport. The girls are based in Spain, though there are other sub-groups in other ... Read More
