Tuesday, March 1, 2011 @ 6:00 PM New York Public Library /Stephen A. Schwarzman Building 42nd Street & Fifth Avenue Margaret Liebman Berger Forum FREE ADMISSION In her new book, Pleasure Bound, Deborah Lutz combines history and biography, uncovering a taboo-loving counterculture in Victorian London whose reverberations can be felt today. Together with renowned artist David Salle, Ms. Lutz will explore the lives and works of Victorian pornographers - sex rebels who exposed the dark side of 1860s London. The work of these artists illustrated troubles that ran beneath the surface of the larger social fabric: the struggle for women¹s emancipation, the dissolution of traditional religions into more personal expressions of faith, and the pressing need to expand accepted forms of sexual expression. These were artists and writers who gathered together to create sexually-charged art, thus highlighting the eroticism of collaboration. |
