EX.POSE: Allison Schulnik (6:00 PM)

Laguna Art Museum continues its contemporary art program ex•pose with Los Angeles artist Allison Schulnik.

Schulnik’s paintings, sculptures, and clay animations show the same relish for visceral and surreal forms. Bright colors emerge through an overall dark palette in an exploration of fantastic figures and characters on the fringes of society. Hobos, clowns, and motley creatures intertwine into the environment and each other, forming moments of abstraction then a semblance of representation again.

Influenced by kindred artists of the past such as the macabre Belgian painter James Ensor, Schulnik pursues a vein of imagery that is haunting, mournful, and beautiful all at once. This is her first museum exhibition, and it includes all new paintings and sculpture from 2012-2013, and all three of her animated films: Hobo Clown (2008), Forest (2009), and Mound (2011).

DETAILS AND ARTIST INFO:
"The Norwegians" by C. Denby Swanson is a strong, bitter comedy about women
scorned in Minnesota and the really, really nice gangsters--Norwegian hit
men--they hire to whack their ex-boyfriends. Olive is a transplant from
Texas and Betty is a transplant from Kentucky, but neither of them was
prepared for the Norwegian men they would fall in love with in their
adoptive state: the practical, warm, thoughtful, destructive, evil, jilting
kind. If you're a hit man in Minnesota, 83% of your clients want to take out
their ex (Oofda!). Olive has referred Betty to Gus and Tor, a partnership in
the whacking business. What Tor doesn't know is that Gus has been sleeping
with the clients. What Olive doesn't know is that Gus is Betty's ex, and she
has already put out a hit on him with a Swedish firm. Can Betty call off the
job in time to let Gus do his? Should she? The Drilling Company, 236 West
78th Street, presents the play's world premiere March 7 to 24, directed by
Elowyn Castle.

MUSLIMA:MUSLIM WOMEN'S ART AND VOICES (All Day)

MUSLIMA showcases the growing global movement of Muslim women who are asserting that male-dominated culture and politics – not Islam itself – have perpetuated the idea of women’s inferiority. As Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ebadi of Iran puts it in her interview: “The undemocratic regimes take advantage of religion to promote their own undemocractic ideologies.”  Ebadi and her counterparts around the world are seeking to change centuries of laws, customs, and perspectives that keep Muslim women from accessing justice and living independent lives.

Officially launching in celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8), MUSLIMA’s content is now available for free online and will expand as IMOW receives user-generated submissions.

- Excerpts <http://missioncomms.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0b9f919dcc&id=21edf69590&e=53de6542de>  from interviews with fearless leaders like the first female prosecutor in Afghanistan, Sima Samar, and Sudanese women’s rights advocate Fahima Hashim.

This is her first museum exhibition, and it includes all new paintings and sculpture from 2012-2013, and all three of her animated films: Hobo Clown (2008), Forest (2009), and Mound (2011).

One Breath, Then Another (NYC) (7:30 PM)

Performer/ writer Amanda Erin Miller premieres her performance/ yoga class hybrid, transporting audience to Indian ashram, and launches her memoir on which the show is based. Saturday, March 9th 7:30pm. FREE.

Miller journeys with the audience to a yoga teacher training on an ashram in India where, at age twenty-six, she has traveled alone seeking healing to avoid destroying herself like her father. Playing herself, her father, a friend, and the elderly ashram leader, Purnima, Miller guides the audience through breathing exercises, chanting, yoga poses, and meditation. During her training, she reflects on mortality and the workings of her mind, learning to surrender to the present moment, inviting the audience to do the same.  Direction and Sound Design by Colleen Toole.

From a young age, Miller identifies with her father, a heavy smoker with food issues who starves himself until he is skeletal. She, in turn, develops a severe case of anorexia that leads to hospitalization. A year after she recovers, he dies of lung cancer.  She is seventeen and afraid of succumbing to a similar fate. “I became hypnotized by the sound of my own breathing.  So reliable: one breath, then another then another, then—“ writes Miller in her memoir, of sitting in her father’s chair immediately after his death. The theme of breath recurs throughout: Miller’s own breaths accumulating as she moves through time, the passage of breath from one generation to another, the breaths of all individuals who connect in this lifetime, and finally the deep breathing fundamental to the practice of yoga.

“Rhythm. This entire piece follows the percussive beats of breath. The language of Amanda Miller’s One Breath, Then Another carries us along a tender backward glance of a young adult saying goodbye to her father. She, coming into her being; he, sauntering toward the end of his.” —CoCo Harris, Founding Editor, Telling Our Stories Press

The event will take place in the lounge at Dixon Place and admission is FREE. The Dixon Place lounge is open before, during and after the show. Proceeds directly support Dixon Place’s artists and mission. Dixon Place is located at 161A Chrystie Street (between Rivington and Delancey) New York, NY 10002. In Sexy Feminism, to be published in 2013 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Jennifer Keishin Armstrong and Heather Wood Rudulph offer simple ways for busy, young women to improve every aspect of their own lives by following feminist principles. With dozens of ways to take action, Sexy Feminism explains how feminism helps women get what they want (and does not, contrary to many reports, ruin anyone’s chances at love, success, sex, beauty, or style). It guides young women toward finding their own brand of feminism and using it to improve their lives and the world.

Heels On Wheels Glitter Roadshow Queers Femme Art MARCH 22-APRIL 7-Vancouver To LA (8:00 AM - 8:00 AM)

HEELS ON WHEELS GLITTER ROADSHOW QUEERS FEMME ART ON THE WEST COAST MARCH 22 - APRIL 7

Heels on Wheels is a NYC-based queer punk art extravaganza touring from L.A to Vancouver March 22-April 7, 2013. The Roadshow combines multi-media, literary and performing arts, music, puppetry, participatory art, and fierce looks onstage to trouble the question: what is a femme? The show itself consists of five performers, local acts--and a dance party if you’re lucky.  The fearless artists rampage from hi-femme to femmedrogyny, dandy darling to ladybeast in a wild revue of visceral, poetic, performance, emotional escape plans in wild workout gear, dark whimsical puppetry, innovative intersectionality, and rocknroll you can sink your heels into!

Heels on Wheels emerges from an active anti-oppression, intersectional, liberatory standpoint boldy asserting: art can change our world. The people presenting art onstage and community organizing in their home city of Brooklyn all build power for traditionally-marginalized LGBTQ stories and people. The tour is working class-led and multi-racial, and includes cisgendered and trans folks, QPOC, mixed race folks, sex workers, immigrants: all fiercely political feminist queer artists whose work weaves punk herstories, survival strategies, and wild costuming into escape artistry. These are stories that do not have enough outlets on a regular basis and that's one reason this tour is important!

The 2013 tour is the fourth, and features Damien Luxe, Adelaide Windsome, Heather Acs, The Lady Ms. Vagina Jenkins and Shomi Noise, with wrangler/visual artist Lizxnn Disaster. The Heels on Wheels Glitter Roadshow tours the US annually with a dazzling, diverse cabaret of performance art works and acts of resistance by queer folks of femme-inine spectrum genders.

Shomi Noise plays guitar and reads from her zine series “Building Up Emotional Muscle,” the story of her journey as a Bolivian immigrant navigating U.S. culture and finding herself through alternative music scenes. Damien Luxe invites the audience to participate in a satirical and sincere aerobics session for all bodies about dissociation and survival (complete with spandex and sparkle!). Heather Acs uses theatrical storytelling and scientific theory to explore the formation of stars and her working-class, Appalachian roots. Adelaide Windsome is a fabulist storyteller and puppeteer who queer-ifies fairy-tale structures into trans-narratives.The Lady Ms. Vagina Jenkins uses dance, movement, and performance drawing from traditional burlesque techniques to explore herstories of her working class, femme, sexworker ancestors, while interrogating the exotification of feminine bodies, race, and of exotic dance itself.

Heels on Wheels is a group of interdisciplinary performing artists who create performance-based cultural works and community events that have a feminist and radical agenda, are produced from sites of femme/inine-positive queer embodiment, and reveal the power in under-represented communities by including local acts, facilitating discussions on activist art, and touring social justice and anti-oppressive cultural works. By actively complicating what it looks like, sounds like, IS like to shamelessly and lovingly  represent femininity, dandyness, fey, femme and queer lady, this work confronts misogyny and sexism and uses cultural works to sabotage the status quo of gender, sexuality, and “feminine” appearance, replacing it with many visions and ideas of what thriving and surviving as femme folks can be.

Stillettos fly, gender justice prevails, and fairytales fracture as they travel through space, time, and stardust to the West Coast!

“The Heels on Wheels Roadshow is a glorious campaign to put femininity in the spotlight. I totally applaud and approve. It is a delicious combination touring glitterati and local sparkle that showcases some serious queer talent. Don’t let them pass you by!”

Friends Of Linda Fabulous: A Benefit Party (7:00 PM)

Linda's going through a little bout with an infamous bug and we want to give her the support she deserves while she's kicking its ass.

Ace Hotel & Swim Club is throwing a benefit party for Sissy Bingo host and Palm Springs icon Linda Gerard with a bunch of her friends like DJ Day, Alf Alpha,  JP Houston, the Fabulous Band and surprise special guests. The benefit will take place at Ace Hotel's Commune event space, located at 701 East Palm Canyon Drive from 7pm to 11pm.

Ace Hotel will take donations at the door for raffle tickets — winners score cool prizes like Linda's compilation album, Fabulous Selections. Book a room Monday night, March 25, with code FABULOUS to score 25% off your stay and we'll waive the resort fee and donate all proceeds from the room to Linda. Ace Hotel will also donate all sales from Linda Gerard's Fabulous Selections record, our Sissy Bingo T-shirt as well as a portion of proceeds at the bar that evening to support Linda.

Linda Gerard has been serenading and scandalizing captivated crowds for over 50 years. Her show-stopping cabaret performances have headlined from Broadway to the Copa Cabana to London, Sydney and points between. She made over one hundred appearances as Fanny Brice in the legendary original run of "Funny Girl" when Barbara Streisand was under the weather — a role that few actresses have reprised. Linda’s original one-woman show, "Ziegfeld's Fanny," was featured in the Palm Springs Follies and for a 16 week run at the Lawrence Welk Theatre in Escondido.

In the late 80s and early 90s, Linda operated and performed in her own nightclub cabaret "The Rose Tattoo" in West Hollywood. Linda self-identifies as an OWL — an Older, Wiser Lesbian — and she represents the flamboyance and self-love that are trademarks of lesbian and gay culture. She deploys her rapturous vocal stylings, incredible style and vaudevillian antics on a packed house every Monday night in King's Highway at Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs where she hosts Sissy Bingo with an effortless joy and sailor's mouth we can only aspire to.

The Birds And The Bees...Unabridged (8:00 PM - 10:00 PM)

New York: Maggie Keenan-Bolger and Rachel Sullivan are proud to present The Birds and the Bees...Unabridged, an original devised theater piece about female sexuality accompanied by a pre/post show art exhibit. Bringing together a diverse ensemble of 25 people, and over 10 visual artists, The Birds and the Bees...Unabridged uses theater and visual art to challenge the status quo and spark much needed conversations about women and trans sexuality.

For years, many women have not had the time or place to discuss and define their own notions of sexuality or to challenge current definitions. Using the experiences, ideas and opinions of the individuals in the ensemble, and the 2000+ people who participated in a nationwide survey, The Birds and the Bees...Unabridged tackles issues of sex education, partner communication, the sexual body, sexual health, identity, and how sexuality changes over one's lifespan. This project examines real opinions and stories...because the gentle explanation of the bees pollinating flowers will only go so far.
