CSS Show, DC ( 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

While nothing can compare to the fondness one has to their hometown, the temptation to live in sunny and glamorous Los Angeles is hard to resist. Some of LA’s newest residents include the ladies of CSS; natives of Brazil, they have temporarily set up residence to record their new album Planta and to prepare for their upcoming US summer tour, hitting many East and West coast cities in June and July.

But before they hit the road CSS has released their new office space dance party of a video for “Hangover”, choreographed by Toni Basil of “Oh Mickey” fame and also directed by Basil and Matt Dilmore. You can watch and share the video HERE.

Songs like "Hangover" stand emblematic of the enigmatic style they collectively harnessed. Co-written with Rancid's Tim Armstrong, it straddles the lines between pop, dance, and punk, while never losing its edge or cheeky sense of humor with lines equating hangovers and heartbreaks.

"It's about being young and having fun," Ana admits. "We hooked up with Tim, and we talked about how much we love reggae and reggaeton. It doesn't necessarily sound like that, but we came up with something that anybody can move to."

That energy courses through Planta from the shimmying and shaking electro-fied opener "Honey" to the tambourine dream of "Faith in Love." In many ways, the album's boundlessness has been CSS's goal since the beginning. Other stand-outs included "Dynamite" featuring friend and guest Hannah Blilie of The Gossip.

CSS fans will get their chance to see “Hangover”, “Honey” and the band’s many more danceable tracks this summer on their June and July US tour.

Erin And Her Cello Invade Rockwood Music Hall! ! NYC ( 8:00 am - 9:00 am )

Hungry for some humor, some sass, some witty tunes and some class? Then downtown darlings Erin and her Cello have the perfect show for you, on Wednesday, July 10th, 8pm at Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 2.

The “quirky, vivacious, and undeniably unique” (Strings Magazine) Erin and her Cello-- led by singer/songwriter and cellist, Erin Hall-- have an uncanny knack for taking an ordinary experience, and turning it into an adorable, and often hilarious, song.  Plucking pizzicato bass lines through jazz, blues, 50’s & French pop; Erin and her Cello will have you tapping your toes, laughing out loud,  and singing along in no time. “Sounds like? Blossom Dearie fronting They Might Be Giants.” (The Philadelphia Enquirer).  Through musical stories of sobriety, Chinese food--even the allure of fresh, clean towels-- Erin and her  Cello remind us not only of humor in the heart of everything, but also the poignancy of city life. “From the moment she steps on the stage, Erin is immediately and effervescently charming…it’s impossible to take your eyes off her.” (philly.com) They will be joined by their seven piece ensemble for one extraordinary set of original, effervescent music-- one night only-- at Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 2, on July 10th, 2013 at 8pm. To purchase tickets, click here.

Prior appearances include Joe's Pub, UCB Theater, Bryant Park, Rockwood Music Hall. Winner of the Stand Up NY Musical Comedy Contest 2009.  For more information, visit www.erinandhercello.com

THE TIGER LILLIES: RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER | CYNTHIA HOPKINS
FREE

The Tiger Lillies, whose wicked cabaret has been likened to “Kurt Weill as scripted by Aleister Crowley” (The Guardian), present a musical conjuring of Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s seminal romantic poem of death and enchantment on the high seas, complete with a cleverly projected stage set. The maverick theater artist and musician Cynthia Hopkins will set the mood of briny macabre with an opening set of sea-faring songs and ghost stories.

FRIDAY, JULY 19, 7:30 P.M.
THE WATERBOYS | ALASDAIR ROBERTS & FRIENDS
FREE

The enigmatic songwriter Mike Scott, “madman or genius, depending on your point of view” (Record Collector Magazine), has explored many sounds and styles through The Waterboys, his principle vehicle since 1983, but the burning intensity of Celtic folk rock remains at the center. The band will play songs from their latest project, An Appointment with Mr. Yeats, music set to the words of Ireland’s greatest lyric poet. Opening the night is fellow Scotsman Alasdair Roberts, a sometime collaborator with Will Oldham, who infuses his songs “with the enduring melodies and lyrical twists of ancient folk music” (The Guardian UK)

CSS Show, Dallas ( 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm )

JULY 20, 2013
ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH
1525 NEWTON ST. NW
11 A.M. - 5 P.M.
FREE! KID-FRIENDLY! B.Y.O. SHARPIES!

Oh yes, it's happening! Featuring zinesters from near and far (even Canada), a "pop-up distro" table for zinesters with just an issue or two, killer vegan sweets by Shannon Roche, and some more surprises that we've got up our collective sleeve.

The D.C. Zinefest is an independent event organized to provide a space for zine makers, self-published artists and writers to share their work with each other and the Washington D.C. community. We hope to support a community that is based upon do-it-yourself practices and ethics by providing the opportunity to expo, workshop, and get to know zines. If we don’t do it ourselves, no one will do it for us.

QUESTIONS? Hit us up at dczinefest@gmail.com. And don't forget, you can still sign up to volunteer at DCZINEFEST.COM!

In the meantime, come out to this reading we're co-organizing in D.C. on July 9, featuring local and touring zinesters: https://www.facebook.com/events/459791814113679/?fref=ts
