Yeah, that probably would have happened if I lived anywhere but the sticks. Saying that here would have initially made them confused & then angry. I don't need any crosses burning on my front lawn, thank you very much. The EU still has me grinding my fucking teeth.

i probably would've turned it around and said, "Yeah, it is a rare occasion to feel like the majority. I think people should be scared that they might have to start watching my kids and trimming my lawn." But, tis me.

OMG. Today has shown me the absolute ridiculous ignorance of the people that surround me everyday. Besides having white people stop political conversations when I walked into the room, I've had about a half dozen white people say something like,

"I bet *you're* happy today."
Why? It's just Wed afternoon.
"Well y'know, Obama."
Yeah, senator from IL, president elect.
"So that makes you happy, right?"
Um, you don't know my political affiliations, so what makes today any different for me than for you?
"Uh, well, you're black, right?"
Yes.
"So you voted for Obama."
HUH? I'm also half white & a woman, by your rationale couldn't it be possible that I voted McCain/Palin?
"Yeah, but you're black!"

At that point I just shook my head & walked away. It's nobody's business but mine whom I voted for & I resent the implication that I would vote Obama just because we're both of mixed racial backgrounds.

And the armchair pundits! These are people with *maybe* a seventh grade reading comprehension. One guy today while I was waiting on line was talking about Obama is going to be the link to the EU, the EU wants to take over America & that the *ANTICHRIST* was going to come from the EU to destroy AmeriKKKa in the next four years. I don't think he even knew what the EU stood for! He kept talking to the cashier even when it was my turn, the cashier said his usual "hellos" & I asked him to just sell me my shit so I could leave ASAP.

yeah, it's rather obvious that "poor" is code for black. esp. with the financial crisis thing. it was killing me a week or two when they were blaming people who got bad loans, as if those greedy millionaire bankers and traders had a gun at their head when they were writing up these loans that people couldn't afford.

nope. blame the poor, after all with that lack of money, they obviously wanted to screw their credit and end up homeless and bankrupt. and you know those "poor" people speak legalese better than anyone. they knew what they were getting when they signed those papers, after all they could have hired an imaginary lawyer.

no this was all a republican scheme from the begining. remember the "ownership society?" that was bush's little plan to get more minorities into houses via deregulation, and then take that property right out from under them. everything in the bush administration is about siphoning money from tax payers and shifting it to the rich. he's like bizzaro robin hood:steal from the rich to give to the poor.

Low Income [ie Afr-Am, Hispanic, etc] Borrowers Blamed in Bailout Crisis

I gather from a deleted post at Metafilter that there's a racist viral ad making the rounds of right-wing blogs and email fwds, blaming Those Coloured People for the financial crisis and implying that viewers should vote for McCain.

I've really been enjoying this website.

http://www.mixedheritagecenter.org/

I'm going to buy a webcam & participate. Louie's challenge on Youtube has had me thinking. What does being half black-half white mean to me? I don't make most white people uncomfortable, but they also often times think it's okay to be ignorant around me because, y'know, I'm not *really* black. Or they praise me for not being *their* chosen negative black media stereotype. Your middle of the road black people are wary of me. I'm not "urban" enough for them. I grew up in small town Kansas. Kinda hard to be "urban". I just pursue my own interests & everybody else be damned.

It's funny because I don't think I'd have been much different if my mother hadn't been white. My father was a very odd man & I take after him. We're both, ahem, black sheep.

All that being said, I was really proud/hurt/confused that the black people let me cook some of our holiday roots food for the first time this year. They all loved my mom's salads, but they were considered "white" foods. I got to cook the greens. They didn't trust me to not fuck it up, so my grandma made a pot too. And I was proud/hurt/confused again when they seemed surprised that I actually did a top-notch job. I know what I'm doing in a kitchen & it was painful to be underestimated like that simply because I'm half white & white people *here* don't eat them. Greens are a Southern tradition loved by most Southerners, black or white or other.

oh AP....there were so many racist stuff in cartoons. i remember even in tom and jerry when the housekeeper came into screen....they never showed her face...but you saw that her legs were brown, which suggest she was a black housekeeper. and the character would speak similar to a mame-y type character.

it is awful to see the images we "knew" were wrong, but some how accepted as part of mainstream humor. and when you look back. it wasn't funny at all.

I guess the new Vogue cover is causing all kinds of drama. It features LeBron James dribbling a ball with teeth bared clutching Giselle Bundchen at the waist. Like, "Beastly, powerful black man want pure, beautiful white woman."

http://allday.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/03/26/808683.aspx

That's not what I thought when I saw it. I thought, "Dang. Wonder what it would be like to fuck 6'8" & 250lbs of raw athletic muscle. Is he as aggressive in the sack is he is when he's on the court? Would he let me wear one of his gigantic shirts while I bake us post-coital muffins?" But now I can't help but see the possible racial/sexual implications of the pic.

Oh, that shit all drives me nuts. I was with a friend at a karaoke night. These two chads sat next to us at the bar. My friend & I chatted amiably, as the show hasn't started & Chad #1 started bellering that he wanted to hear me sing. He bet I was a really good singer. Nobody else, just me. The only PoC in the joint. When I asked him why he thought I had vocal prowess, he looked at me all confused like, "Don't you know all black women can sing?" He wasn't drunk & after a few seconds of replaying what he'd said to me to himself . . . he quickly backpedaled. "Um, I heard you could sing. I know nrfplmd. He said you're great."

ETA: I have no idea what Soulja Boy is. Does that make me a bad negro? Is having all of the Stax boxsets redemption?

oooh interesting thread....

I got pissed off a few weeks ago at a bar/dance club when this guy walked up to me and my girls at the bar and asked, "so can yall show us how to do the Soulja Boy dance??"; keep in mind we were like the ONLY black people in there. I said, "excuse me???" My friend immediately was like "Oh you assume we know how to do that dance cuz we're black?? WE dont even listen to hip hop!!" His face was so red, he started stuttering and walked away with his head down. It was hilarious!

'J. Alexander, a runway coach on TV’s “America’s Next Top Model” who helped produce Baby Phat’s show, said the standard for using black models is “two girls, three maximum” per show.

“And you normally get one to make it clear that she is obviously dark, too, so they don’t get any lip from journalists or any backlash for being racist,” he said.'

not surprising to anyone who's aware of this kind of thing, of course.
