Thanks for the uplifting post, Karategrrl! Glad you had a nice time at the yoga place. It's so cool to be able to see and appreciate the awesome variety of the human form.

I just watched this indy movie, YPF, last night. It profiles several young couples before, during and after the act of having sex (YPF stands for Young People F__ing). All but one of the women actors were small breasted! And all were presented as "hotties".

Hello hotties,

I just spent an extended weekend at the yoga place I've told you all about before--the place with the nekkid jacuzzi/community shower area. I have to say that though I spent a fair amount of time discreetly observing other womens' boobs and saying of some of them, "dang, I wish I had those," overall I was proud, threw back my shoulders and said to myself, "Fuckit! this is who I am." So let it be known I was representing all you ladies and our sweet smallness. Every time I go there I am so awed at the amazing variety in women's bodies. I mean, everyone has two arms, 2 legs, a torso and a head but the different configurations of sizes and shapes of breasts/nipples/hips/butts/legs are endless, and all are beautiful in their own way.

Also of note:

1. A young woman in the program I was taking. She had even smaller boobies than I and one day was totally shameless in a tight white tee with no bra. The next day she had on a lightly padded workout top. I guess we have the versatility to go however we wish--"au naturel" or built up a bit. wink.gif

2. March Oprah magazine (U.S.). In a fashion column, someone wrote in for advice on how to dress when you're "flat-chested." Though I hate that term, I have to say I really liked that the tone of the advice was positive, playing up the variety of things small-busted ladies can wear rather than, "You poor dear, this is what you're limited to."

I have just watched about three ten minute clips of the BBC's Tribal Wives. Don't get me wrong, I find it interesting and enlightening and entertaining and curious, but I also find it offensive in the same breath.
And I cannot fully articulate why, nor do I care to.
But OMG! The older woman from the Kune or Kuna Tribe was just BEAUTIFUL to me and filled with such vigor and passion. And very perceptive in her analyzations of her foreign friend. Wow! I wish I could see the whole episode. sad.gif
Anywho... back to more clips.

i know, i had a cupcake yesterday in his honor! then i got into an argument about who was more influential, Lincoln or Darwin (since they share that birthday). i'm sure you can guess who i was rooting for.

i especially love the tribal wives episode in the amazon. i've mentioned it before, but in the end they are trying to get the lady to be completely naked (because everyone else is) and the one woman says, 'i have a vagina, we all have vaginas, who cares!' i'm glad you've enjoyed it!

DJ, today is Charles Darwin's birthday. I thought of you. wink.gif

I youtubed last night and watch that BBC show "Too young, too soon" with the teens getting boob jobs. Ugh. Only one of them got a size that was proportionate.

I also watched a bit of "tribal wives," DJ. It's really neat!!!!!! I want to do this!!

breasts are just a modified exocrine gland with a bag of fat attached. seriously. and exocrine glands are the same kind found in your armpits and genital region. but they are also a secondary sexual characteristic (i.e. a trait that develops when an organism is sexually mature) and they signal to others, mainly men, that girls are becoming women. of course, you have to consider that during our evolutionary period, girls a) weren't developing as young and b)reproduction at a young age would have been necessary because of a truncated lifespan.

i think that breasts are universally a symbol of woman-ness, but the degree to which they are sexualized (in some cases not at all) varies from culture to culture. i think because we don't see breasts all the time and we also don't see them performing their biological function, it is easier to become obsessed and turn them into a fetish.

but i digress. karategrrl you should really watch that BBC tribal wives series, especially the one with the people in the Amazon and the Himba.

there are women of color in western "pop" porn too, albeit, barbie doll look alikes. so, the tribes people of those lands would probably be either digusted, confused or turned on. you never know *shruggs shoulders*.

haha as a fellow fair-skinned girl, 'paleness' was the first thing i picked up on too

Ha. I'm so pale I glow in the dark. Yep, many of the porn girls are tan, but to the tribespeople I was referring to (think Aboriginal or African) they would still be considered pale in comparison to the kinds of women they are used to seeing every day. That was all I meant.

everyone has interesting points.

karate- I know I'm disgusted by it, so I imagine many other people would be too. But the "paleness" of the women? I'm naturally ghost-white, and from what I've seen of porn it's chock full of fake tans. I guess I just don't know what "paleness" you're referring to?

strongirl and dj, this is really interesting. Quite true that it's not the object itself that's actually a turn-on, but what we attach to it mentally. What are breasts, anyway? Some mammary tissue and fat, with a nipple (the latter of which men have, too, BTW). Not to minimize the beauty of the human body, but when you think about it, that's really all breasts are. But fetish-ize the breast, make it something that peeks out in men's magazines, we cover up with tiny swatches of fabric at the beach, and go to great lengths to have "bigger and better" versions of (I'm talking about breast augmentation surgery) and all of a sudden there's a whole new meaning attached to it. I wonder what the residents of some tribal cultures would think if we showed them some western-produced porn. Would they be disgusted at the slim hips and paleness of the women? Would they wonder what the big deal is with the breasts when they see naked breasts flopping around all the time in their tribes?

QUOTE(strongirl @ Feb 10 2009, 12:52 PM) *
On the "Why?" question below, something that occurred to me recently is that we (Western pop culture) have fetishized breasts. I don't mean that in the casual slang sense, I mean it in the psychological diagnosis sense. You can't fuck a breast...or a shoe...or a whip...or whatever. You can't achieve union that way. So it's constant unfulfilled desire. And I think a lot of people - men and women - are in this state regarding breasts. So implants make sense in that context - they don't make a whole woman more attractive or sexy - they ARE sex to the person with the fetish, so the bigger the better and it doesn't matter if it's unhealthy or unnatural. The woman becomes peripheral, just a delivery system for the fetish, the breasts.

I also don't think it's coincidental that the most breast obsessed cultures - US and UK - are the ones least likely to nurse their babies and wean the earliest, providing that early sense of denial and unfulfillment that sets up a fetish.

i think this is absolutely spot on and i am convinced this is at the heart of the problem. we never see bare breasts in a nonsexual way. we never see them for their intended, natural purpose. people don't understand that a breast is like a cow's udder. maybe not the most beautiful image, but an accurate one. cod forbid that any part of woman's body be for a purpose OTHER than pleasing a man. sacrilege!

i got in a drunken argument a couple weeks ago about the woman who was nursing her kid up until age 8. i think that is a bit late to be nursing (the WHO recommends 'til age 2), but the reaction from the group of people i was with was complete disgust, not just at that woman, but breastfeeding in general! this one lady actually said, 'why should you do it if they make formula?'

are you kidding? why would you pay for an inferior product when you can make something better. for free. plus it's better for mom and baby (higher iq's, fewer infections, reduced risk of cancer, obesity and the list goes on and on and on). i understand that some women are physically incapable of breastfeeding and for them, formula is a great alternative.

we need to see breasts for what they really are. i'm not saying they aren't sexual, because the obviously, most definitely are, but our culture needs to see and accept the duality of their purpose.

grrrr. this really just gets my hackles up.

I do agree it's a fetish. It's like people will think all these things about you if you have large breasts, including the idea that you'll make more milk. I wouldn't be surprised if some people think larger breasts=bigger sex drive.

UGH, this totally brought back a memory from middle school, of two big-chested friends laughing that they were big b/c they drank so much milk. There I was, guzzling it down since childhood, and I had no such luck. I was too embarrassed to say that, though, and therefore draw attention to myself and my smallness. If only it were that easy to have bigger breasts!

On the "Why?" question below, something that occurred to me recently is that we (Western pop culture) have fetishized breasts. I don't mean that in the casual slang sense, I mean it in the psychological diagnosis sense. Fetishism is fascinating to read about - the sexual impulse is suppressed then redirected onto something that is not directly sexual. Shoes, feet, lingerie, wigs, whatever. I think as a culture we've done that with breasts. And once the fetishism is complete, the object BECOMES the focus of the sexuality - it's no longer about relationship, or a whole person, or achieving orgasm, or intercourse. It's about the THING...and it becomes obsessive because you can't ever really connect with it and be complete. My latest theory.

I was pondering that today, and you are reading my mind strongirl, right down to the last sentence.

I've heard and read that kids who are nursed longer go thru a serious stage of booby love, and that's completely normal.

I do agree it's a fetish. It's like people will think all these things about you if you have large breasts, including the idea that you'll make more milk. I wouldn't be surprised if some people think larger breasts=bigger sex drive. And I wouldn't be surprised if large breasted girls felt like people reduce them to being a pair of breasts-which is one reason I don't think I could stand anything larger than a c-cup for the long haul.

i remember this documentary made me sad too, for different reasons-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnCZDjkJoR4...feature=related
You cant really get a good idea of the girl from that clip, i dont think. some of the stuff she said before the operation reminded me alot of things said on this forum and i could actually really identify with her. its just a shame she couldnt find another way through it. im sure an increasing number of young girls are feeling this way and taking this option

im so sick of having boobs on the brain

Thanks for the clip, I'll watch it when my youtube stops acting funny. mad.gif

One thing I do like about the English documentaries is that the show the full breasts. I'm sorry if that comes across creepy.
