Why do guys always have to say, "ARE you on your period?" or "ARE YOU PMSING?". Ever since I could remember I've always heard that being said to myself and others. Yes, having a menstrual cycle is part of being a woman but that doesn't make it ok for them to say that! The biggest shocker was when my hubby said it to me just this week. I exclaimed then proceeded to hurl my diaper bag in his direction (barely missing him-I have horrible aim). I'm annoyed that I haven't seen any change since grade school. Sorry gals, I just had to let that out! . Stay wonderful!

I am between a rock and a hard place. I feel like I am being discriminated against in my department. If I registered a complaint, I would basically have to leave the program. I could not transfer to a new supervisor and expect to still receive any funding from the department, since my current advisor is head of my area of research. One of the girls in the program left this fall, when I started, and complained to the Dean of arts that she had been subjected to discrimination based on both race and gender, and if I do the same (just gender, in my case) I think it would seriously affect the department, as it should. But that would be it for my academic career. I know my best course of action, in terms of a professional career, is to just suck it up, make allies elsewhere in the department, finish the program, and never look back, but that will be 3 more years of my life... and as a "feminist" I hate that I am not making a complaint of some kind...

Thanks guys, I've been aware of encountering various levels of sexism in my life (including times where I saw men discriminated against as well!) and my field has always been run by the old boy's club (like most fields! ha) but back home the men I've worked lingerie online with really are somewhat blind to gender, and most of them have the same expectations for anyone as long as they are good to work with. Here in Texas, the attitude of entitlement by some of the male students and the higher expectations placed on the female students both drive me absolutely crazy, maybe because I've never encountered anything at this level before.

It doesn't help that I've been taking a class in theory about gender and ethnicity, and had to listen to male and female undergrads both spout insane ideas and stereotypes. I'm the only person who speaks up about some things. One of the girls in the class actually said that "all feminists do now is complain, because really in this day and age, do we even need feminism anymore?" Argh! I know she has young and hasn't seen what happens when you get out into the real world, but seriously? This is a campus where social "activism" typically involves anti-abortion pamphlets, or lobbying for the right to carry guns on campus, and students walk around in t-shirts that say "beat the hell out of obama." I've been trying really hard to ignore it all and remember that most of north america is not this bad, but then some days it starts to really get to me.

I'm sorry that you are having to go through with that shit & having to make some hard choices that you shouldn't have to make. You're really damned if you do & damned if you don't. The comments below that video are, once again, heartless. 'Enjoy your sexual assault', wow. Apart from some positive comments, the whole point of the march went over ppl's head there. Ofcourse, disscussions on youtube tend to cater to the lowest common denominator, i know.
