I've been "with" him for about a year, we were friends for two years before that, so we're pretty close. I had a pap on the 5th, actually, and I just got the nice little card in the mail saying "we are pleased to inform you all results came back normal." Do you think I'd need to go in for another visit or can they somehow figure this out from the pap? I'm not too sure how it works. Ugh, it's so good to talk to someone about this you have no idea. It's been weighing on me forever.

MadameHooch, the first thing you need to do is straight up find out if you still have the virus in your system. You should be getting paps at least once a year (twice a year if the Dr. says so). However, you can have a normal pap and still have the virus- "normal" means that there are no negative changes or abnormalities. But you can still have the virus, and the doctor can tell you if you still have it.

Have you had a pap smear? If you have anything then it would have probably shown up on the pap smear by now. A lot of HPV infections clear up on their own.

Okay, I have a deep dark secret I've never told anyone. I had a genital wart outbreak in early 06, with no reoccurrence. Other than that I have been perfectly fine and healthy, with no problems what so ever, and what my gyno refers to as an "extremely healthy pelvis". Since all has been fine and dandy, I never mentioned the situation to my boyfriend, but now I'm starting to feel guilty about it. We've been together so long that bringing it up now will probably cause major problems. I just don't want him to find out the wrong way. We are both certain we want to spend the rest of our lives with each other, and my current nightmare is being pregnant one day down the line and at while at the obgyn with my man, all excited and shit, and the doctor going "oh, so have you ever had any issues with those warts you had when you were younger?". HELP!

Thanks for the info edie. What I had was a colposcopy and according to wikipedia "an Ob/Gyn can remove some vaginal HPV types that are viewable during a colposcopy". So I guess maybe that's what they were trying to do. I don't really know. Mostly it seemed like the doctor was just swabbing around in there and then he took that little bit for the biopsy.

I almost wish I hadn't looked because now all I can think of is that little snip that he took. I was sore for a bit and it was kind of weird because I could feel distinctly that he took the sample from the right side of me. Blech.

CC_girl, I've never seen the camera thing, and I don't think I'd want to (I mean it might be cool for a second, but not the blood and the snipping!). I think they only snip a piece of tissue for a biopsy, so that's probably what they did.

As far as I know there is no treatment for the virus. My doctor said that most women's immune systems clear the virus within a few years, so keep your system strong. I have read that smoking in particular can keep you from clearing it. I've also read that red clover tea discourages abnormal cell growth. I don't know if that would help treat the virus, more likely it just prevents complications from it.

So I went to the specialist today for a followup to my last appointment. After the last one they told me that I had mild cervical dysplasia. Anyway, today was more of the same but I was pissed off because the appointment was made almost 6 months ago and when I got there I was told that the regular doctor was on vacation but they had someone filling in for her. And it was a man. He was nice and everything but it was still a bit annoying to be told that at the last minute.

Anyway, I don't know if other people get this but they had like, a little video camera so that I could watch what the doctor was doing to my insides. I was surprised to see a fair amount of blood. I would have had my period last week but I had a lot of stuff going on so I started a new pack of bc pills right away so that I could skip it. Anyway, he had to swab away a lot of blood and at one point I thought I heard him say something about semen (which was weird because cc_boy and I haven't had sex without a condom for a few weeks). The worst part was when it seemed like he actually snipped off part of my cervix or something (is that what they do?). He told me not to watch but I did anyway and only got squigged out when I saw it filling up with blood.

Also, I'm still confused about HPV in general. From what I've looked at on the internet it only talks about treatment for the warts that can come with HPV. I don't have any warts but is there any kind of treatment for the virus itself?

Ladies I'm back!

I finally had my yearly pap exam 2 days ago. Remember I said the nurse (over 1 1/2 years ago) told me I had low risk hpv? well it turned out it was BS! i have high risk hpv! aaaaa! at least i don't hve the one with the warts :-( but i do have the cancer one :-( Anyways when she told me I had the high risk one I thought i was going to die (I thought high risk was SUPER BAD) and she told me that the only difference is that it MIGHT give you cancer if you don't keep it checked. For it to actually become cancer, it takes like 6 to 10 years (and of course it'd only develop if you didn't get your yearly paps and checked on it). That time, 1 1/2 years ago, I also got a biopsy done, that came back later saying there was "nothing to worry about". Well this time my nurse was more specific. They did the biopsy in two different "Abnormal cells" spots (the other nurse told me they only did it in one place, wtf!) and one came back as being nothing, while the other came back as nothing too, but for some reason the cells were a little inflamed.
Im waiting for my results, I have to call her in 2 weeks and a half (right before my vacation trip) and HOPEFULLY it'll say that the hpv has disappeared! CROSS YOUR FINGERS FOR ME BUSTIESSSS!

Also, I asked her if high risk hpv would make it difficult to get pregnant and she said no way. In the past, they used to really make a mess down in your cervix when trying to get rid of the bad cells but nowadays, its more "centralized" so its impossible that having hpv (and getting hundreds of biopsys and tissues taken) will make you infertile. PHEW.

I believed on what you told me p_176, I just wanted to make sure the same went for high risk hpv ;-)

About the HPV vaccination for men -- I thought the reason it was marketed first to women and girls was that it was incredibly effective for us, but not so much for men. Am I remembering wrong?

yea you can totally get pregnant with hpv. easily treatable while pregnant. i think the only way it would be difficult to be pregnant is if you had to have a cone biopsy, which happens when you have dysplasia further into the cervix, which it does not sound like you have to worry.

i don't think pcos affects your discharge.....maybe you have a yeast infection? or it could be nothing.

Alas, I forgot to add one little thing. Since last year I've been getting this light yellow discharge ( only gets a little metallic smell when I'm close to getting my period) and when I went to the doctor and tested me (for bv, ghonnorea and chlamydia) it came out all negative. I don't have any pain at all, no itchiness either, it's just the yellow discharge asks sometimes that metallic smell(can smell it a little when having sex). What else can it be if not one of those things I got tested for? I don't think it's pcos since I don't have any other symptom. I want to go to the doctrbut I don't have insurance anymore :-(

Thanks for your quick answer, p176! I really hope it comes negative again. Btw I didn't havethr hpv that gives you warts, but the other kind. I read online that this girl have had hpv for 3 years and she was pregnant , so I think this gives me somehope. I'm such a dummy, I always get so paranoid about everything! Havinga baby is what I want more than anything and I would have a broken heart if for some reason I couldn't conceive:-(

As a side note, the guy (who I'm pretty sure gave me the virus) and me had sex for the last time almost a year before the pap that showed the abnormal cells was done. So I think it's safe to assume that if in that whole year only a very very few abnormal cells were present in the pap, that now it must be almost completely gone? Dammit my uterus better be a fighter!!

it's possible your body killed the virus and you'll be fine unless you get reinfected.....

Ladies, I'm back! Sorry for taking such a long time off, but lots of things has happened in my life, so...yeah.
I have a question about HPV. I got a pap smear done like hmmm 1 year and a half ago, and it showed that I had some abnormal cells present so they asked me to go back in 2 months to get a colposcopy. Well it came back with the results that I have HPV ((from 1 to 4 of the scale of danger, it was a mere 1, phew! it was only in one little area). He told me to go back in 6 months and I did and this time he told me that the results for the hpv came back as negative, so YAY!! Told me to book for an appt to get a normal pap exam in a year (I have it next month).
Ok, so it brings up the question: What's the chance that it'll come back?? Should I start to freak out?? My boy and I are thinking about getting pregnant...you girls don't think HPV could make you infertile right? Sorry but im such a HYPOCHONDRIAC, if I think about a disease, I start freaking out and think I have it!
PLease help on clearing my doubts :-(

I got diagnosed with HPV about 6 or something years ago. It was the most horrible experience ever. My ob was a huge biotch and basically was like oh this is what you have, here's a pamphlet and sent me on my way. I couldn't ask any questions or anything because she didn't even give me the time. So there I am standing in the waiting room, crying, confused, and pissed off. They told me they wanted to see me back in 6 months. I said f* it and never went back to that ob again. 1 year after that incident I found a new ob, told him of what I was diagnosed with and he tested me. Nothing. It's been 6 years later and I've never had another test come up positive for hpv. I do think hpv is the weirdest disease ever and I can't really say that I believe I ever had it.

I do agree though, keep yourself healthy. There's really nothing else you can do, it's just a weird freaky disease.

sorry to hear that! dysplasia means you have cell changes but it's not major - they'll do another pap to make sure it did not get worse. keep your immune system up and you should be fine.

Well, I just found out that I have HPV. I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering the statistics but still. I was also told that I have something called dysplasia. They didn't really tell me much except that they want to see me again in 6 months.
