polly, there is a really great movie by Deepa Mehta that explores the world of these women, it's called Water. The part about them being considered bad luck is especially true, I remember a part of the movie where a Hindu priests warns a widow not to let her shadow touch a bride that she is walking past.

I had never heard of this being caused by tradition, I had always heard that it was a part of the Hindu religion. The widow would either be burned alive during her husband's cremation (known as sati), be forced to live in poverty, or sometimes that the widow would be married to the husband's brother, if the family allows it.

I only know what my dad has told me, he's Sikh but being from India knows a fair bit about Hinduism and its traditions.

A lot of the politicians over there say that they are trying to eliminate the caste system but as you said, it's very hard to change something that so many people still believe in. I have also heard there is a belief that you have to accept whatever caste you are born into because you will be in a higher caste in your next life.

The article talks about shelters and stuff for these women, but is there any group trying to change the culture's beliefs? I know the caste system in India is thousands of years old and very hard-wired into society, but is anyone trying to press for change?

Unfortunately, I don't think they can be sued for that horrific little number. I believe you have to have or intended to make some sort of profit to violate the copyright law, and that video is more like a home video posted on the internet. At best a (very very weak) case could be made by saying they made the video to solicit new church members, but it wouldn't go anywhere because I don't think the "church" makes any profit.

What gets me is that usually deranged fantasies have some sort internal logic to them....so what the heck was that?! If it's "too late" and we're all going to burn, then why the video (and protests, and everything else)? Is it all just some sort of elaborate masturbatory I Told You So? The word "freaks" just doesn't cut it....

Oh, and I live less than an hour from those people. I've seen them up close and personal. The dead skunk in the Grossies thread is more pleasant. *shudder*

Those people are psycho. I remember they went down to south Texas (where I'm originally from) to go protest at a soldier's funeral. Only the local papers printed a heads up and a whole bunch of counter-protesters showed up threatening to beat their asses down.

They remind me of that "baptist" church that kept preaching that all the people who died in the tsunami deserved it because they were heathens, since it struck in areas where Christianity wasn't the number one religion.
