I read about this last week! It's sooooo messed up. I don't know where I read it, but someone said that when she handed down the verdict, it was obvious that she was dripping with disdain and had moral issues with the sex worker. It's disgusting.

I find this terrifying. A woman was gang raped at gunpoint and Judge Deni stated that this case "minimizes true rape cases and demeans women who are really raped." because the woman who was raped worked in the sex industry. So she let the guy go and he orchestrated another gang rape four days later. You can read more about it in these articles I got in my mail today.
When is rape at gunpoint not rape? When it's 'theft of services' Has already set a disturbing precedent: In a nutshell: sex worker in Philadelphia agrees business with one client and is then gang-raped at gunpoint. Judge throws out all the assault and sexual assault charges, and treats it as 'theft of services'. The defendant was charged in an identical incident involving a 23-year-old woman four days later, [district attorney] DeSipio said. Neither woman knew the other and both told identical stories. The other men involved in the attack couldn’t be identified. DeSipio was so stunned by Deni’s ruling in the first case that he refused to present the second one. “I wouldn’t demean her that way,” he said of the second victim, calling the proceedings “a farce.” Judge Deni then threw out the second case for failure to prosecute. To complain (politely): Complaints form for the Judicial Conduct Board of Pennsylvania Judge Teresa Carr Deni: 001 215 683 7223 Kenneth Shear, Chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association: 001 215 238 6338 |

It's something a lot of men don't seem to grasp, that when women get a shock we tend to fall back on our 'training' which is usually appeasement, smoothing over, detachment. That's such a shitty situation. I want a verbal judo course.

My best friend works in a male-dominated workplace, a highschool for mechanical engineering and that sort of thing,
and she was at her first staff party the other night. She's usually pretty dressed down, but this night she was dressed to the teeth. I mean, it was a PARTY, it's what you do. All the male teachers were literally drooling over her, making inappropriate remarks and laying their arm around her waist etc. They were fighting over who got to sit beside her at the table, it was silly & she didn't like it, but thought whatever, it's a staff party, I'll get drunk and go with the flow. Later the same evening one of the teachers, in his 50s, sat down and talked to her about his wife, how their sex life was really bad and he didn't feel attracted to her anymore. My friend went "whoa!" inside but was pretty drunk and didn't protest very firmly, she just tried to smooth it over, said that "you shouldn't say such things about your wife, I'm sure she's a really good person and that you two can work it out". THEN HE SAYS HE WANTS TO LICK HER PUSSY!!! WHAT. THE. HELL?!? When I heard it I just asked "why the hell didn't you just kick him in the balls?", but then again, I have NO IDEA what I would do if anyone said that to me. She said she feels so fucking gross and dirty and violated by it, but that up till then he's been this really nice guy, just fatherly and decent, it came totally unexpected. She doesn't know what to do next. She told a younger, male colleague right after the incident, but he just said "But you just kept talking to him. I saw you, you didn't look upset. It couldn't have been that bad". How is that "not bad"?!? Fuck, that is just so textbook sexist - if you're not bawling your eyes out and bleeding, then it's OK. If you're dressed up & drunk, then you're asking for it. I guess she could file a complaint, but that would pretty much mean she can't work there anymore, at least not without a lot of problems. It just seems like such a horrible situation for her. |

Did anyone hear about Maxim's list of "un-sexiest women". Of course I wouldn't expect anything less from maxim, but still Sandra Oh and Sarah Jessica Parker are on that list?

Have you heard about this??!
A judge in Maryland aquitted this guy of domestic abuse for hitting his girlfriend in the face in the parking lot of a gas station (and it was witnessed by a police officer) because, "sadomasochists sometimes like to get beat up." -------------------- |

it bothers me how much people are bothered by things that are anything outside of their box of familiarity or comfort... although sometimes i'm bothered by things too... but at least i make an effort by pretending that i'm not bothered. ; )

Oh, that reminds me, this one time my friends and I were at the New England Aquarium, and we were sitting in the cafe, and this woman was breastfeeding. My one friend (admittedly, kind of an awkward, shy, weird geeky guy) mentioned that he was "never sure how to act or where to look." I was kind of astounded. I said, basically, why would you act any different than if she was bottle feeding? He really didn't know what to say to that. But, I mean, duh.
Honestly, the breast feeding "controveries" get me so mad I can hardly be coherent. Eesh. |

It still amazes me how bothered people are by breastfeeding. Actually I should say enrages rather than amazes. Honestly, just to reiterate what you ladies have already said, it's fine if the breasts are just out on display but actually using them to feed a child? Crazy! Just yesterday I was at the doctor's office and a woman pulled out a breast and started feeding her infant son. I could barely contain my horror!

or that people would compare it to urination, which i actually heard a guy say once on a new report about a nurse-in! excuse me, when you take your lunch break, some one doesn't walk up to you with a horrified expression and say, 'i'm very offended, do you think you can take your pasta salad and go eat it in the bathroom?' give me a fucking break.

it's so ass-backwards that breasts on display for "play"purposes are just fine but "utility", as in actually being used for a neccessary function, somehow that's offensive. how the FUCK does someone logic that out? that's inexplicable.

I guess breasts are supposed to by large, perky and have nothing to do with feeding children. When was the last time you saw an udder in a centrefold. Hey douchebags, that's what breasts are fucking for! The fact that breasts also serve a playful function is beside the point.

Treehugger, I want to slap that guy you ran into. I really don't understand why people take offense to breastfeeding. Really it blows my mind that the issue makes anyone uncomfortable.

ergh. people get offended by breastfeeding boobs because they're not always the pretty young white boobs we're sooooo used to seeing, exhibited in the ads in the funny blog pepper posted. and in those ads, they're for hetero men, not babies. and althought men are often babies, they don't like when things they like aren't only for them to like.
