Pepper-

I'm certainly not offended by your preference in your reference sources. And I'm no gentian violet advocate, just seemed like something people might consider if you're constantly combatting bv. Additional options aren't ever bad.

I do intend to ask my new gyno about this when I go back in Oct/Nov. She's fabulous and very knowledgeable so I'll report back on what she says.

Hey Ladies...

Just an update on me. I inserted one capsule of Boric Acid about Aug 24th and it took the smell away. My period had came on on Aug 26th, lasted about 3 days, my period went away and so I had sex 2x this past weekend and still no smell for me. Im guessing the Boric Acid is working for me with just one capsule....

[font=Arial Narrow][size=2]hey girls i had my period and while i was on i inserted 1 a day for 4 days and no smell. so now comes the big test. i will have sex with my man tomorrow and see if the smell is back. i will write back with the results. so far the boric acid is working for me. i have an appointment with a so called vaginal specialist on the 20th of this month. i cant wait to see what this quack has to say. im so tired of these doctors always trying to get you to take all these meds all the time. so ladies as for me the boric acid is the way to go for now.

uh huh. of Course it's safe if wikipedia says so. (don't take that personally klee, i just don't like how they make statements as though they are facts.)
i researched it when my little was new and believe me, what i found made me decide not to Ever put it anywhere near his little mouth or my breasts.

"Gentian Violet is a purple dye derived from coal tar "

"Studies in rodents have been conducted that suggest that gentian violet is carcinogenic and mutagenic "

there was much scarier stuff in my alternative mama books.

Hmmm...well, I don't know too much about it except that it's safe to use on breast feeding infants if they have oral thrush. Which by common logic would make it fairly non-toxic.

This is from Wikipedia: Gentian violet's worst common side effect is staining skin and cloth, but if used on ulcerations or open wounds it can cause tattooing. It is generally considered safe for use on children and breastfeeding mothers. It has even been applied to the mouth and lips of premature infants, and has a long history of safe use. La Leche League and others have recommended it even for thrush on the nipple.

gentian violet, sounds so lovely doesn't it? but i wouldn't be putting that stuff anywhere near my anything. not so natural. not that the rest of the crap they use to treat bv isn't ghastly toxic either. gah.

Has anyone been recommended gentian violet for BV? It seems quite bizarre but apparently you can have your doctor paint your cervix and vagina walls w/a gentian violet solution. It also treats yeast infections, which is always a bonus. It might be something I'd ask about if I continue to get it every month in my next relationship.

See this doctor's blog here: http://blogs.chron.com/herhealth/2006/07/r...shy_odor_1.html

I've found studies online that say that aci-gerl doesn't really help against BV. But I think someone on here may have had some positive results. Boric acid really does get rid of BV (and yeast too) but the problem is that our bodies, for some reason, do not know how to keep the ph regulated for the boric acid or antibiotics' effects to last very long. I still want to order the acidocophilis suppositories online but they are expensive! They are supposed to restore PH after using boric acid. >>>> https://www.rockwellnutrition.net/product.a...5&catid=101

so, I'm not sure if you ladies have already talked about what our vaginas' pH levels shoud be, but I thought that would be good to know, since ours is obviously off. I found this: http://www.drspock.com/article/0,1510,5888,00.html & http://www.webmd.com/hw/womens_conditions/hw6026.asp

So, between 3.8 and 4.5 is where our pH levels should be. It seems like we have more higher pH level similar to what children have. This would explain why the Borid Acid works--by bringing down your vagina's pH level to a more acidic level. http://www.evitamins.com/healthnotes.asp?ContentID=2812003

But I'm still wondering, is it safe? My biggest fear is to screw something up to where I can't have children later.

Has anyone tried Aci-Gel? I'm assuming it's similar to Metro-Gel and RePhresh? These also seem like they would cost a lot over-time...

I haven't done further research on the Boric Acid and I haven't started using it yet either, but I was wondering if there could be any effects that would harm pregnancy in the future. Has anyone looked this up?

Damn Ladies,

Boric Acid for life huh? Well I guess until they find a permanent cure, this is what we have to do. Maybe the real question is, does Boric Acid really get rid of BV? or does it just mask the symptoms?????

Just a quick update ladies. I went off Boric for a week, just to see what would happen, and the B.V. came back so bad, it's unreal. The absolute worst air bubbles, and lower stomach pains. So I went back on it Friday night, used two capsules, then 1 Sat. night, and it's gone again. Haven't had sex for over 2 weeks, so I know it's not from that. So, I guess Boric will be for life.

i'd use it with the bedding, towels, anything that touches your bottom, etc. might as well just switch and pick a nice perfume. remember unscented drier sheets if you use those too.

OK, another dumb question! I'm going to buy unscented detergent today. Can I use the unscented detergent with just my underware or should I use it in all of my clothes.(shirts, pants, etc)I love having scented detergent but If using unscented detergent will help this problem
then I will have to make an adjustment. Also how do you know if you smell bad because I have no clue what normal is anymore? When I'm at home I don't notice a smell but sometimes if i'm walking around in a store I notice a faint smell and sometimes I think it's my perfume but then again who knows.I'm so paranoid!

Hmm. Interesting. But I think the boric acid is controlling mine well enough that there's no odor before or during unprotected sex...but the day AFTER said unprotected sex, I will always notice odor again. Starting to think my tubal ligation was a bad idea! At least I had an excuse to wear condoms before. Because the boy certainly doesn't think his sperm could POSSIBLY be a bad thing. rolleyes.gif

Mmm, no, not really. I'm not a sweets fan, much, at all. Because I'm a heavy beer drinker...(bad I know; it just seems so ingrained in me and my friends and just the area where I live, etc).

Anyway, it precludes sweets eating. My diet is pretty consistent through the month. For me, a sweets binge is one square of chocolate out of a 70% cocoa bar. Like, a one inch square piece. And dark choc. doesn't have that much sugar anyway...

So anyway, the boric acid has been a godsend for me. I'm more reactive than proactive about using it...I just use it if I notice an odor. It's gone the next day normally.

hi Ladies, I'm new to this board and like many of you, have been researching and trying to find a natural cure for BV over a year now. I can remember the first signs of this in high school 14 years ago when I used to wear biking (bikers') shorts under my skirts. The tight spandex all day long was a breeding ground for this bacteria during puberty years. I didn't even think anything of it, until just a few years ago. I guess I thought it was normal. At times, it's worse than others as most of you probably know. The antibiotics from the docs would make it go away for only a couple of days of so, then it would return. Not to mention, antibiotics would kill off the little bit of good bacteria that was there and cuase other things like yeast infections. duh!

Yes, it does seem worse during sex, but I don't think it is the sperm causing it. I just think that if the infection is active, it is already inside of you and the crap ends up being pulled out by your partner; thus, the smell is exposed more as well. My boyfriend of 2 1/2 years pulls out everytime, especially since I stopped taking birth-control pills because I feel they are not good for you. He agrees and is supportive. Anyway, his sperm never enters me and (when the infection is at it's worst) even before we get into it--the first few strokes--stuff is already coming out and the smell is usually there. We usually have a towel available, wipe off the stuff that just came out of me and continue without much more discharge. It's sad to have to go through this. unsure.gif I am fortunate to have a wonderful and supportive guy, but he still shouldn't have to suffer. I want a cure!!

My infection does seems to be worse after I eat more sugar, refined and processed foods or drink alcohol more than usual and the infection definitely lightens up when I stay away from too much sugar and eat healthier--more vegatables, no refined foods. I was taking Garden of Life's Primal Defense a few months ago and it seemed to help as well. I just haven't gotten to the Health Food Store to get more and don't have the money to spare. After reading all of your posts, I am tempted to try Boric Acid. Afterall, I do have my good days and bad days, but wouldn't it be soooo nice to never have to worry about this aggravating infection ever again! Thank you all for your input. I'm glad I found you smile.gif I'll keep you posted...

QUOTE(treehugger @ Sep 1 2006, 07:18 PM) *

I still get BV with unscented/undyed detergents. Also unscented shower soaps too. For me it seems to be related to semen. If I have sex with condoms I don't get it; if I have unprotected sex where there's internal ejaculation, I get it every time. It also seems to be related to the time of the month. Seems like, within about three days before my period starts, I always get it really bad!

I wonder...

Has anybody else tried the unscented detergent?I think that might have something to do with some of it.Have you all heard that commercial that says something like"Whats worse than having your house smell like fish? Having your house smell like fish and flowers".I guess thats what scented detergent does.(makes it worse) Also is anybody here still self-conscious even when using the Boric acid. I swear I wear powder, feminine spray, monistat moisture control, and I use the boric acid but I still feel afraid to walk past someone or if I hear someone say something about bath or something of that nature I feel very self-conscious.I know I don't smell but i'm always thinking "what if I do?".How do you all deal with this and how do you know if you smell or not because I don't even know whats normal anymore?
