neverending, a student clinic for acupuncture, acupressure, tcm etc is so much less money. they need patients to treat and they are fully supervised by a very experienced instructor. it takes longer but it's so worth it. check out the schools in your area, give them a call.

eralc alegna, what? i don't think i understood that entirely, say again.

Why are doctors giving us or people recomending yeast products? What does that have to do with or why would it help BV?

Hi everyone. Well I found out I don't have a Bacterial infection. Just yeast still. My Dr. Prescribed 14 Boric Acid caps. Hopefully that will work finally ....seems to always come back. =( just wondering if anyone used Boric and had oral sex about 5 days or so after it? LOL Sorry for the question but My husband and I are finally going to be alone Friday nite and I'm not sure if I should just wait on using the Boric just in case you know =) Also my Dr. said all good things about using Boric so you guys could all breath a sigh of relief. Thanks!

I've thought of acupuncture but when I found out how much it was I changed my mind.I think it was $100 each session and thats not including the herbs you have to buy in order to get better. You have to have 2 sessions a week and it might take months in order to get the full benefit.I'm back in college and right now I just can't afford it.

Thank you so much jewejscando, the scooping worked well enough so tonight is the first night. I'm going a full 00 capsule morning and night for a week or two or until the symptoms *hopefully* stop.

So do you think theres something to the hormone thing? Should we all go get blood work and see? It would make sense for those of us close to menopause or with hysterectomy related issues and maybe the younger of us are just imballanced. I wouldn't be surprised if it was common with all the nutritional and environmental slack we have going on in our society.
I was also wondering if anyone had considered going to see someone who practices "alternative" medicine. I read an article in a local paper about a girl who got inexplicably sick and was having chronic yeast infections. she was diagnosed with like a yeast overgrowth or something and perscribed a diet and suppliment plan of some sorts and it worked. I was thinking I'm just too damn full of bacteria. I'm not exactly the epitome of health and care. It seems everytime the BV goes away acne flares up. The two must be related..

Hey, question. Has anyone developed a rash from the Boric? I developed a really bad rash on my forehead, and a small rash on my arms. I went to a skin specialists, and she said I was having an alergic reaction to something. She instructed me to test my different hair products, lotions etc. She also gave me a prescription of Cortizone and said use this for 10 days and it will be gone. Well, here I am on day 11, and the rash is no where near gone, and 10 times worse on my arms. I've limited my usage on Boric, I've only used it 2 times in the last 10 days. So, I'm still not sure if it's from that. Anyways, anybody??

I get the Boric on my hand all the time, I just wash it off quickly. Some people suggest using a piece of paper, buy pooring it on the paper, then folding it and allowing it to slide into the capsule. I just put some in the cap and scoop it. It's never bothered my fingers, but I wash my hand immediatley, then again after I insert it.

Neverending. Yeah, I agree with you. I'm going on 40, had a partial hysterectomy, starting to get the heat flashes, and fish in the kitty. Sounds like old age if you ask me!! wink.gif just kidding all you young girls!! Anyways, I would ask the Doctor for blood work. I mean really, why go on something, if you don't really need it.

Sorry to keep posting but I found some more info that some of us might be able to use.You know me; always researching! As much time as I spend on this you would think I would find the cure to our problems!

Reduced estrogen levels are the main cause of vaginal dryness. Estrogen, a female hormone, helps keep vaginal tissue healthy by maintaining a normal vaginal acidity level. Acidity creates a natural defense against vaginal and urinary tract infections. But when your estrogen levels decrease, so does this natural defense and the amount of vaginal lubrication. Decreased estrogen amounts can lead to a thinner, less elastic and more fragile vaginal lining.

jewelscando:I am almost certain this is my problem but how do I talk to the doctor about this.Do I just ask for the Hormones or should I ask for the blood tests then have him prescribe the meds? Most Doctors prescribe meds without blood tests but I was wondering if that is safe because estrogen can be dangerous if given too much.If this does not work I give up.Oh, Take a look at this and tell me what you think! I found this on a research website.

Changes in the vagina occur in response to a woman's hormonal cycle. Estrogen causes the vagina to thicken, then blood vessels bring nutrients and oxygen to the vagina. These maintain vaginal flexibility and health.

Estrogen and pregnancy
The pregnant woman at term produces more estrogen in one day, than a nonpregnant woman produces in 3 years! Estrogen is responsible for enormous changes during pregnancy. During pregnancy, there is a large increase in the amount of estriol in relationship to estrone and estradiol. Increased levels of estrogen that occur during pregnancy may be associated with improvement in psoriasis.

let us know how it works. I read through some of the FAQ and such and it sound pretty legit, they've done their homework...

Anyone got any advice on filling my own boric acid capsules? I picked some up yesterday and it was a disaster. I can't get it on my bare skin, right?

so we need more estrogen? :S
I think what neverending means eralc, is generally before the menopause like anytime before it, not the direct time before... or am i wrong? if i am im 17! (Ive had this problem for at least 2 years now!) and i can assure u its totally unsex related!

She was referring to declining estrogen levels. That is the cause of menopause. It would be unusual for someone as young as we are to have this happen. Imbalances, sure but I think the point of the article was to point out signs and inconveinences of meopause beginning. I wasn't sure whether or not menopause might be a concern for anyone on the board even though it's not a concern of mine.
And trust me, I know that it's not caused by sex, but we all know it's aggrivated by it. I'm no novice, I've had my bouts when celebate too.

Thanks mfc10! I'll try picking up the acidophilus somewhere and mixing that in. I'm starting the boric acid tonight, hope I'm as successful as you were

And a P.S., since all of you are still discussing remedies and actively researching this, have any of you had long term results with the boric acid (seemingly most popular) or something else? Or is it just an effective means untill it inevitably rears it's nasty head again? I'd at least like a month or two between rotten stages...

Hi--new to this forum...I am perimenopausal, and started having recurring bouts of BV, then yeast from the Metrogel I was prescribed to get rid of he BV, then the cycle continued over about 6 months. Nothing helped until my gyno agreed that I should try boric acid capsules vaginally. He wrote me a prescription for them, which a local COMPOUNDING pharmacy filled: They combine 300 mg. boric acid powder with an equal amount of acidophilus powder & put it in capsules. (The standard used in the US is 600-mg. of boric acid per capsule, but in Europe, they use only half as much with great results.) The theory behind using the acidophilus powder is that boric acid can kill off some of the good lactobacilli in the vagina; this helps to replace it. (One could also purchase vaginal acidophilus capsules online to use a day or two after using tyhe boric acid vaginally, or buy powdered acidophilus at a health food store & add it to homemade boric acid capsules.)

At any rate, I was able to taper down to using one at night once every week, then once every 10 days, then once every 14 days, then not at all. No BV or yeast infections since December '05 (it's nearly October '06 now, so 10 months!) When I do get a period or have spotting, I stick a blob of SYLK vaginal lubricant inside to help keep the pH inhospitable to bacteria & yeast (available online--it has a pH of 4.7, not bad considering most lubricants are about 5.5-6---SYLK is closer to the natural acidity of the vagina.) Sometimes I use a piece of a tea tree oil suppository (available online or in some health food stores) if I think anything is brewing down there. So far so good.

However--I might be a special case, since I haven't had intercourse in ages, due to vulvodynia I ended up with as a result of an inflammatory reaction to the Metrogel & to the azole-type yeast creams!

At any rate, several of the gyns in my doctor's practice laud the value of boric acid.
All the best,
maggie

Neverending. I've been wondering the same thing for months, but nobody ever seemed to reply. I had a Hysterectomy about 5yrs ago or so, and this is when my problem started. I didn't have a full Hysterectomy, which means I still have my ovaries. I'm thinking, mine has something to do with that as well.

Found something else:
Birth control pills also raise the pH of the vagina so that it is inhospitable to sperm.

Vaginal pH. The normal vaginal pH is 3.8 to 4.5. Bacterial vaginosis often causes the vaginal pH to be greater than 4.5.

I'm not saying anyone is going through menopause but I was thinking that this may be due to some kind of hormonal imbalance or something of that nature.I suspect my problem is due to hormones because I never had any problems whatsoever until I started /stopped birth control. Before I had my miscarriage in July,I did not have any symptoms of BV for a couple of months. After the miscarriage the BV came back. What changed during pregnancy?Hormones right?

Oh, I have an Doctors appointment next week and I'm going to let him know that I want him to check my hormones.I don't mind being the guinea pig if it's going to make this stop! I will let you ladies know what happens.

I sure as hell hope not!

At 22 I'm nowhere near menopause and I think would be a freak of nature if my estrogen was declining.
Then again at 22 you'd think I'd be able to sustain an active, happy and uninterrupted sex life now wouldn't you?
