My mind is split in two: Jolie Holland, "Mexico City," and Neko Case, "This Tornado Loves You."

I went through a phase a few weeks ago of having Northen Star from that album in my head!

Now, Its David Bowie's Starman.
period_monster
Maude, I love me some Hole/Courtney.

Currently stuck on an oldie: All my trials will soon be over.
acewalker
haha i LOVE Starman! (and david bowie).
it's especially catchy cause the chorus is pretty much the same as Over the Rainbow.
i'm also attached to it cause around the house my boyfriend sings little songs for everything he does, and they are always to the tune of Starman.

as for me, before starman, it was the hives--walk idiot walk.
funnybird
La La Love You by Pixies. The song I wish we'd chosen for the first dance at our wedding.
Mermeg
fourthing the Hole love...I've been listening to Live Through This a lot the past few days, and coincidentally realized that album came out 15 years ago this week. eeegads does that make me feel old.

And yay to the Pixies too! Even though I don't know that particular song *goes to look it up*
lilacwine13
I like that Pixies song. smile.gif

Justin Timberlake's Sexyback keeps on running through my head.
Chairman Miaow
YYY - Zero, because lack of sleep is making me a bit loopy like Karen is in the video.
period_monster
Not a song, but currently obsessed with The Carpenter's, The Singles. outing myself here as a huge nerd, but it's fantastic springtime music.
auralpoison
Oh, man. This is so embarrassing. Frank Mills. Music Box Dancer. It was my favorite album when I was four & I drove my poor parents insane with it. No wonder they smoked so much weed.

I heart me some Pixes, "First base / Second base / Third base /Homerun!"

Two songs I've been digging lately:

The Whispers - Tonight

Jeff Tyzik - Jammin' in Manhattan

Both just make me so happy to hear.
auralpoison
Willie Nelson - What Is It You Wanted? Willie's voice doesn't have an ounce of blues in it, but I dig it anyways.

What was it you wanted
Tell me again so I'll know
What's happening in there
What's going on in your show
What was it you wanted
Could you say it again
I'll be back in a minute
You can get it together by then

What was it you wanted
You can tell me, I'm back
We can start it all over
Get it back on the track
You got my attention
Go ahead, speak
What was it you wanted
When you were kissing my cheek

Was there somebody looking
When you give me that kiss
Someone there in the shadows
Someone that I might have missed
Is there something you needed
Something I don't understand
What was it you wanted
Do I have it here in my hand

Whatever you wanted
Slipped out of my mind
Would you remind me again
If you'd be so kind
Has the record been breaking
Did the needle just skip
Is there somebody waitin'
Was there a slip of the lip

What was it you wanted
I ain't keepin' score
Are you the same person
That was here before
Is it something important
Maybe not
What was it you wanted
Tell me again I forgot

Whatever you wanted
What could it be
Did somebody tell you
That you could get it from me
Is it something that comes natural
Is it easy to say
Why do you want it
Who are you anyway

Is the scenery changing
Am I getting it wrong
Is the whole thing going backwards
Are they playing our song
Where were you when it started
Do you want it for free
What was it you wanted
Are you talking to me
zoya
....I cannot get the goddamn song "Baudelaire" by Trail of the Dead out of my head. for DAYS.

I need to find another ear worm...

AP - I don't know that Willie song, but awesome lyrics!

auralpoison
It's very weird. It's Robert Cray style blues with, well, Willie vocals. The fact that it it doesn't work, makes it work.

"Shadow on the Wall" by Brandi Carlile.
It is a mercy that I finally got a good song on repeat in my brain. However, this will probably change in a few hours since I am going to the grocery store and fully expect an early-'90s power ballad to be playing overhead. Happens every time!!!
MsKissyStarfish
"We're Going to be Friends" by the White Stripes. My kids like this one too. smile.gif

Of Montreal, Id Engager.

I feel like dancing around to this.

Went to a Lucinda Williams show last night. She didn't sing my favorite song from her new album, but it's totally streaming through my brain.

If wishes were horses
I'd have a ranch
come on and give me another chance

sassygrrl
PM, yeah I saw her here in Atlanta and she didn't sing that song either. sad.gif

I always remembered Crystal Gayle singing this song on the Muppet Show when I was a kid, but according to my stepmomma, Sylvia Tyson wrote it - no disrespect for Ms. Gayle, but Ms. Tyson's authorship kicks it up a notch in my mind! (Plus I was more than a little disappointed to go back and find the Muppet Show clip......and see the muppets change the entire song at the end to put the kibosh on the idea of a woman running away from restrictive parents, or from her hubby. *ahem*)

RIVER ROAD

Here I go once again with my suitcase in my hand
I'm running away down River Road
And I swear, once again, that I'm never coming home
I'm chasing my dreams down River Road

Mama said, "Listen child, you're too old to run wild
You're too big to go fishing with the boys these days"
So I grabbed my clothes and ran
Stole five dollars from the sugar can
Just a twelve-year-old jail-breaker running away

Here I go once again with my suitcase in my hand
I'm running away down River Road
And I swear, once again, that I'm never coming home
I'm chasing my dreams down River Road

Well I married a pretty good man and he tries to understand
But he knows I've got leaving on my mind these days
When I get that urge to run I'm just like a kid again
A thirty-year-old jail-breaker running away

And here I go once again with my suitcase in my hand
I'm running away down River Road
And I swear once again that I'm never coming home
In my dreams I still run down River Road

Lee Dorsey - Give It Up

Give it up to give it up
You know what's on my mind
Give it up to give it up, girl
You've been wastin' too much time
You know you got what I want
You come on, you're 'bout to blow my mind
Can you dig it? Give it up to give it up, girl
You've been wastin' too much time
Give it up to give it up, girl
You know what's on my mind
Ah don't wait another longer!

Patiently I've waited, baby, waited just for you
& I ain't gonna move & act till you do what you're supposed to do
You got your thing together, & I can dig it too
& that's the very reason, baby, I'm stickin' here with you
Give it up to give it up, girl
You know what I'm talkin' about
You can dig it, to give it up
Yeah, make me shout

Give it to me! Give it to me! Give it to me!

Give it up to give it up, girl
Givin' up takes so long
It's right around the corner
I'm gonna get it & bring it home
Give it, give it, give it up, oh make me shout
Give it to give it up, girl that's what I'm talkin' about

Give it to me!

Michael Jackson has such a big catalog of songs. Why do I start singing one of the more lackluster songs when I heard about his death? I started singing "You're just another part of me"....
girltrouble
i've got "i'll be there" running thru my head cos of that commercial that has it.
roseviolet
PYT has always been my favorite MJ song. It became kinda inappropriate later on, what with the pedophilia charges and all, but I still love that song.
girltrouble
i love pyt. it's so funny to think of the power of his music, but i can't help singing with that song with the commercial. it's almost pavlovian.
doodlebug
I'm totally crushing on Tom Waits' The Piano Has Been Drinking right now. I play it every day on my mp3 player at 4:20. wink.gif

And I'm also madly in love with this Bonnie Raitt song:

I Will Not Be Broken

That was then this is now
Found my way back here somehow
I knew you'd have to let me go
I told you once I told you so

Take me down
You can hold me but you
Can't hold what's within
Pull me round
Push me to the limit
Maybe I may bend
But I know where I'm not going
I will not be broken
I will not be broken
I will not be...

Someone other than who I am
I will fight to make my stand
Cause what is livin' if I can't live free
What is freedom if I can't be me

Take me down
You can hold me but you
Can't hold what's within
Pull me round
Push me to the limit
Maybe I may bend
But I know where I'm not going
I will not be broken
I will not be broken

I won't let you near it
I will let my spirit fly
Fly
High
Oh take me down

Take me down
You can hold me but you
Can't hold what's within
Pull me round
Push me to the limit
Maybe I may bend
But we both know I'm not going

I will not be broken
I will not be broken
I will not be broken
I will not be... no no baby
ooh...

I don't know quite where else to post this, but it seems like a good place here.

The band and I have been asked to do a gig for a family reunion, too well-paid to turn down. The catch is, they want "mainly country."

My country awareness being limited to the Dixie Chicks, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and the Judds, I am looking for song suggestions, good songs by women country singers/songwriters/bands/musicians. Please help!

I'm totally willing to take on old school country like Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, etc., with a feminist caveat: while I'm willing to sing something like "One's on the Way," I will NEVER, EVER sing something like "Stand by Your Man," even in an ironic way b/c many country fans don't "get" irony.

Help? Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?????
stargazer
Doodle, there was a discussion of country artists in the What music are you listening to? thread. Lots of music there for you to search from. The Be Good Tanyas are pretty cool and they're Canadian! Of course, you could always do Loretta Lynn's the Pill and call it a day. wink.gif

doodlebug
Ooh, thanks, SG! I'm-a post over there right now!

I thought about The Pill, but I'm leaning towards "One's on the Way" b/c it also takes a real poke at the issue, and everyone loves it.....

5 AM (a Love Song)
Blue Rodeo

With every breath we grow further apart
Sometimes I wish we didn't know how to talk
And as we sort out the who said you said who said
I said I only wish I came a little better prepared

5 AM
These things will pass
Tomorrow won't be our last

Funny how I'm always here with you
I never meant to change your world or change your point of view
I only want to hold you when I feel a little blue
I hope you know I'll always be there for you

I know by now I should be sound asleep
But my mind won't let me, it feels like it's going to explode
And I'll say that you're right if you'll just say that I'm right
Let's hit the hay and call this case closed

5 AM
Things get so strange
Tomorrow's a brand new day

Funny how I'm always here with you
I never meant to change your world or change your point of view
I only want to hold you when I feel a little blue
I hope you know I'll always be there for you

I blame the DJ on Saturday night for all the different songs going through my head. He played Prince's version of Erotic City which I have not heard in a long time. Then, he played Snoop Dogg's Ain't No Fun. I heard Jermaine Dupree on the radio which got me thinking of Monifah's Touch It, then Da Brat's That's What I'm Lookin' For. Thinking of Da Brat made me then think of Missy Elliot...yeah, my brain has been unraveling with lots of music lately.

It's a mix of two song-crushes right now:

The Mists of Down Below - the Duhks,

and....

Blue Moon of Kentucky - Patsy Cline's version.

Yes, really.
