I just got a short little shaggy bob- looks kind of like Michelle Williams' hair in Wendy and Lucy. I went to a hairdressing school where students do cuts- it only costs $7 (I tipped $5 on top of that, still an amazing deal). The stylist seemed to be concentrating very hard and taking her time (no chit-chat, which I appreciated), and did a simple and technical cut based on my old passport photo; the result was exactly what I wanted.

Edie your hair sounds completely adorable!!!!
pictures?!
my mom used to drag me to the beauty school to get perms which was a disaster in all ways ; for the students who could never get my hair to hold much curl & so looked like they were always doing something Wrong & for me who had to endure the hours & hours of chemical Hell & HEAT on my poor head.
your situation is so much better !

it's always rounder when styled at the salon, i really love it. i can make this mod or punky, or kinda artsy. i can't wait to play with it some more.

you ladies have any ideas on how to keep your hair from looking dirty/flat/style-less on the days it's not washed? the pony tail is getting old.

hp- cute! I like the asymmetrical flip
cocl - I have been wondering the same thing, and I discovered bobby pins. I used to think that they were a pain to use and uncomfortable, but with some practice they're more comfortable and put less pressure on your scalp than a ponytail! I have waist length fine blond hair, so when it's dirty (I have to wash every day) it's just limp and sad looking.
This is a basic french twist that I do fairly often. It's easy, secure, and looks oh so chic. I can only do it when my hair IS dirty, actually. It took a little practice (like 30 minutes) and a hand mirror to check the back, but now I can whip it up in about five minutes.
Sometimes I stick a headband on this to make it more casual, and for an upcoming formal event I'm going to use rhinestone bobby pins - it's pretty versatile.
If you like retro hair, this is a good site:

COCL, I have also been wondering the same thing - for a long time! I'm like you Crinoline, I find i pretty much have to wash my hair everyday and I often cant get away with not doing it as it looks limp and and horrible. One thing i have found is dry shampoo from Klorane. You spray it into your hair, leave it for two minutes and then brush through and then style your hair and the limpness/dirtiness is kind of removed. It usually gets me an extra day before washing and my hair is a lot easier to put into up-dos! Maybe something to try!

I was wondering if anyone here ever had a weave put in using glue? How much hair do you lose and how damaging is it?
I've only ever had the type of weave that is sewn, and I LOVED it.

Hey BUSTies, I thought I would defer to your infinite wisdom about hairstyling!
Are there any Asian ladies here? Or if not, anyone with RIDICULOUSLY straight, I mean so pin-straight it makes your hairdresser weep and other people's flat ironed hair look wavy, hair that's also oily and thick/heavy/massive...that uses product to style it and give it lift/body? Because I don't know what to buy...I just got my hair bobbed at an angle (shorter in back) with ruffly sort of bangs, which I'm really enjoying, but I don't know how to give it a bit of oomph in the back/around the crown, and texture to bring out the layers she cut into my hair. And most of all I want to keep the bangs slightly full so they jut out a bit and curl under, you know?
My stylist rubs greasy seeming junk into her palms and then smooths it all over my head, like a gloss. Do y'all know what that stuff is? She also "spritzes" this stuff that almost looks like talcum powder or something around the crown. Help!
This is sort of a good idea of what I'm talking about...lots of Asian chicks in "super awesome Asian hairstyle" pages clearly do something to give their hair a lot of body and wave. Aside from heat/rollers/curling irons, what gel or whatever are they using?!
Ack. If anyone knows, I'd be so grateful! I'm guessing it's more punky/alternatively marketed or something, maybe...

Mar 12 2009, 05:51 PM
This may be a dumbass question, Ifjuly, but did you *ask* your stylist what she was putting in your hair? Because dollars to donuts, they sell it at the salon & she'd have gladly sold you some & showed you how to maintain your "super awesome Asian hairstyle". Call your stylist!

Mar 13 2009, 01:45 PM
You're always so nice to me, auralpoison. Thanks.
I'd never been to see this particular stylist before--I've had bad luck keeping them; the last two I had were both awesome and both moved from my state within months of me glomming onto them! One even became a priest or something! Anyway, I was terribly shy which I know is pathetic, and the last time someone at this salon "consulted" me about hair products they ended up charging me afterward for it! I know it's stupid to worry about that but I was, so I didn't ask...I guess maybe I could call and ask. The greasy stuff she rubbed into her palms first came in a jar not a tube, and every stylist's station had it...bright pink and green jars. And the other stuff was really strange--like a mist of powder that made my hair dry and a little crusty almost. Sounds gross I know...
I know how silly I'm being. Sorry! Just wondered also if people simply had good advice about products in general that give painfully straight, heavy hair a lift and some punkish "chunky" action. Eek!
candycane_girl
Mar 14 2009, 02:40 PM
They charged you for "consulting"?! I think that's fucking ridiculous. Any time that I've asked a hairdresser what he or she is putting in my hair they have gladly told me and then tried to sell it to me.
As for my hair, I have finally embraced my natural texture. It's very wavy and has a few curls. The day after I wash it it tends to flatten out a bit but it's still really crazy and wild. For years I've been straightening my hair. Interestingly, I have gotten way more compliments on my hair since I stopped straightening it.
This summer I want to lighten it naturally with red wine vinegar. I just need to figure out where to buy an empty spray bottle.
auralpoison
Mar 14 2009, 07:58 PM
Aw, shucks. T'weren't nothin'.
Ifjuly, that is some bullshit. A consultation fee over buying product? I'd have pitched seven different shades of holy hell over that. Product sales are a BIG boon to salons, you should *never* have been charged. NEVER. Most stylists are *pushed* to offer up product tips to boost sales. Give her a call, I'm sure she'd be glad to help you!
I use kinda greasy stuff in a green pot. It's wax. It gives my straight 'do the piece-y ness that I like since I can't do the salt water, beach hair thing.
OMG, CCG, I KNOW. I had been straightening my mixed-race mop for years! I let it be years ago & started wearing braids, locks, etc. I finally decided to see what would happen if I didn't fuck with. Now I have my nice fresh out of the shower wild & curly days & my 15min curling iron doused in Sebastian straight days. I dig the variety & the fact that I am no longer burning my scalp/destroying my hair.
Spray bottle land is beauty supply or plant dept at your local retail monstrosity. I buy them to shoot at my cats when they misbehave.

I'm not that daring with my hairstyles since I have gotten older.I use to cut it all off and wear it funky colors but I haven't done that year.I'm mixed race and my hair is naturally curly.I either wear it curly, flat iron it,or just throw it in a ponytail.I don't really know what to do with my hair lately.

What kind of curl do you have, Mssglamorous? I'm mixed, too, & have nice little ringlet action going on. I like mine both curly & straight, but when I don't feel like messin' I pull it back & throw on a silk schmata. What kind of product do you use? I have curly stuff & straight stuff. My bathroom is waaaaay overcrowded! I make a good deep conditioning mask that I try to use every week or so.
vixen_within
Mar 15 2009, 08:57 PM
haha I see your way crowded bathroom, and raise you one! I have mixed, curly hair too. I get it ironed every once in a while. I used to braid it into two french twist looking plaits while it was wet, and then when I took it down the next day I'd have a nice body wave to work with.
I'll also fold a scarf into a thin band and push the hair back like it's a hairband, then pin the curls.
Recently I've been wearing it loose with a creamy leave in to give it weight and moisture.
I love to wear wigs too, instead of damaging my hair.

I recently got a weave for length, and I love it. I also dyed my hair, which I was kinda worried about. I hadn't dyed my hair in a very long time, as I like my natural colour (red) and find that dye makes my hair feel rough.
Anyway, I was walking down the street yesterday and an old lady at a bus stop said, "You have beautiful hair!" so I'm going to take her comment as a sign that no one knows this is not my natural hair colour, or that the bottom couple of inches were bought in a store.

I'm the last person who should be giving you an opinion about this, because clearly I'm incapable of doing my own hair (having a feminist mom who was uninterested in teaching how to do hair was a mixed blessing!

I had that mom too! Now I help her with her hair! I am so jealous of you all, my hair is insanely flat and lifeless. The worst thing is, it's very fine, so it tangles easily, but hairstylists always go, "wow, you have so much hair (there's a lot, even though its very fine, I guess), here, I'm going to thin it out for you." Why? Who wants thin hair? It takes a 15 minute conversation every time I go to a new place to convince them I want to have hair. So weird.
I also dye my hair but never lighten it, with no problem, not even any split ends. And always with the cheap $10 hair dye at the grocery store, never at the salon!
Someone else was asking about product for fine hair. don't use anything called a wax unless it's supershort (like, less than 2"), use the creamy gel-like stuff. It all makes my hair look greasy, so right now I have started using rollers and they give my hair amazing body (for me, anyways) and you just need a little bit of hairspray applied after blowdrying to keep it, no gel at all. It takes forever but looks soo fabulous. I use the sticky rollers, not hot ones, because they also add a bit of texture and can let the hair air-dry a bit.

That's what I've been thinking of getting too! My hair is very, very wavy, and it's flat. It's also frizzy and has a lot of different textures and isn't very thick. I don't do anything with it besides put it in a bun anyway, so I may as well get rid of all the length (most of it is to my waist). Then it might not be so flat on top and since I'll probably still wear it up all the time I can use a clip or wear a little ponytail instead of a big old lady bun.

Help! Static!
I have always had dry hair, but I have never had static hair like this! Everyday it's like I stuck my finder in a light socket. I use the most moisturizing hair shampoo and conditioner. I have some pomade like stuff, texturizer, smoother... everything. I've even tried rubbing it with dryer sheets (works for my horses but not for me). Any ideas?
keelvin
Apr 14 2009, 12:45 AM
You can use a bit of hair spray. Not too much... just enough to relieve the static. I also think that the water on the hands method works. I usually try to ground myself before I pet my cat. I touch a piece of wood or something that will ground the spark before I touch him. If I happen to forget to do any of the above and I do catch a spark when we touch... he gives me a dirty look that only a cat can give.

Does anyone know how to get sleek hair? My hair is mostly wavy, but it gets curlier depending on the weather and what I did with it and stuff.
When I wash my hair it gets mostly straight, but really dry, dull and unhealthy looking. After a day or so it bounces up and looks really nice- soft and wavy and full- but by then the roots are greasy.
I want a product that's going to make my hair look nice the same day I wash it, but without making it look wet or crunchy. I've tried a couple different things that seem to make the frizz look shinier instead of getting rid of the frizz in the first place.

Still loving my new short hair. I might even go in for a trim.
Also, I have been researching dry shampoos for a long time, and just recently found out that Walgreen's stocks 'Pssst!' dry shampoo. That means I won't have to buy it off the internet or travel to a foreign country to buy some other dry shampoo.
Does anyone have suggestions for other brands? So far I am REALLY happy with the Psst, but you have to listen to the can after you spray to make sure it's not leaking air or else it will be flat and won't spray next time. Pain in the ass, but my hair has never been happier with me.

The short hair looks very good on you, Alluna. It looks much lighter than your old style & will rock the spring.
My gran always used cornstarch for dry shampooing since that's basically the main ingredient in dry shampoo. She'd put it on a make up brush & do like the mineral makeup ladies, "tap & buff". She had to work it in very well because if she didn't she'd have little white clouds around her head from where she patted & poked her hair.

my shag has grown out & oh, I'm not digging it so much right now!
however, as I practice patience til I can figure the next folical style step, I've discovered Henna Creme (Surya) & it's good stuff. messy, but good. it's just one small dark glass bottle so no mixing, shaking etc, and you can save whatever you don't use for later if you cap it tightly & keep it from the sun.
it comes w/ a plastic cap & takes an Entire Hour to color, but as I only initally highlighted w/ it, it wasn't so bad.
and then I got bold & mixed some in w/ my Jason Natural Henna Conditioner (it looks like canned pumpkin now) & sometimes use a Lot of conditioner & put the cap on in the shower & really concentrate it w/ the hot water heat & so far, my dark almost near chestnut brown hair has Lots of lovely, shiny natural copper to it.
I can now tone it up or down (still going up though- love that red!

) & it's not the hasssel of full-head coloring so no roots!
laziness & thrift can be terribly inspiring!

Alluna, I found that Sephora carries different types of dry shampoo. Oscar Blandi and Ojon carried highly recommended dry shampoos. I think I might pick some up myself. I'm trying to wash my hair less since I color and blow dry my hair. I've also made the switch to SLS (Sulfate-Free) shampoo. Kenra has a good SLS Shampoo sold at Ulta. I tried Jonathan's line, but, I found the shampoo too watery without enough grip for me.

I need inspiration. I think I want to go shorter but I need an image of a cut to inspire me, otherwise I'll just go for something wishy washy. I had chin-length hair for years but the cut at that length really matters IMO. I'm thinking of getting a messy bob but I really really don't want one which will just devolve into a triangle and do nothing for my face. I've been looking at magazines but all I can find is long styles and pixie cuts. Any suggestions would be welcome...

I got my hair cut about a week ago and yah it's ok.
gone is the outgrown (in about 15 minutes) Shag, and back to a short, very undercut swingy right at chin bob. again.
my stylist cut the right side to make the most of a deep natural wave I have there (can't fight it) that she thinks is wonderful. I'm sort of .. mehhh...
don't get me wrong, the look is Great, I'm just bored to tears w/ bobs but it's literally the path of least resistence w/ my hair.
however, I'm experimenting w/ tiny baretts & clips now (little girlish but cute) and my stylist said if I brought in the henna she'd apply it for me and charge $25**. that's still less than 1/2 a regular color with her is so I'm thinking about it. I'd probably like my hair a lot better if it were closer to the orangey red that looks best.
as to dry shampoo's I read that Bumble & Bumble makes a good one but that it's hard to find.
I'm going to look for that Pssst! for frecklette bc she has such crazi long curly hair that washing it often is an ordeal but it leans towards oily. - thanks!

finally- I'll come clean: the various henna's that I'd tried never really gave me anything more than highlights.

Try using Redken spray starch on your wet hair then dry with a roundbrush. After use a VERY small amount of Redken Glass (it's a shine serum). Simply put a small drop into your palm, work it in your hands, then work from root to tip.

You should also get a good deep conditioner to use once or twice a week. Biolage makes a great conditioning balm. I use it weekly. I simply add it liberally to my washed hair and let it sit for 5 to 10 min. I've even put it on with a plastic cap and did a few things around the house while it sat. I hope this helps

I bought a hair straightener today. I've never straightened my hair before so I kind of just winged it. I used a Tresseme heat protection spray and put some silicone serum over the surface when I was done. It does look a lot straighter and less frizzy, but still dry and dull. Maybe I need a deep conditioner?
The ends are still curly and it's already starting to wave up a little but I don't mind. I don't want pin-straight hair; I just wanted something that would cut down on frizz and make my curls look less like a poodle.
I heard that you're supposed to do very small sections on very high heat so you don't have to go over the same section of hair more than once, but I was hesitant to put it all the way up (it goes up to 400) because my hair isn't that thick. But maybe next time I'll try it that way. I also think the sections of hair I used were too big.
I was afraid I was going to burn my scalp or my ear or something. I have no depth perception and I was looking in the mirror trying to get the tongs around the hair and having trouble.

ht, I've straightened my hair for years and the bigger the section you use, the more likely it is to come out frizzy and still curly. Small sections are the best and even though most stylists will tell you not to, I go over the same section a few times (however I have really strong, thick hair). Also, even if you straighten your hair and it starts off pin straight, throughout the day the straightness will ease up just due to things like moisture in the air. If you already have really curly hair then chances are it will start to slightly curl throughout the day or at least look a bit wavy.

Hi, ladies!
I am considering coloring my hair @ home for the first time. Any words of wisdom? Freckle, I see that you just did yours. Do you like the brand you used? Is it permanent or semi-permanent?
Candycane, I also go over the same sections of my hair more than once w/ the flat iron. But mainly b/c my flat iron is not that great & that's what it takes. I know it's not good for my hair though. Hmpf.

Can anyone recommend a good hair serum to get rid of frizz? I don't like using mousse or gel, I find that serums are usually good. I can't for the life of me remember what I've used in the past.

Is anyone in here in love with dreads? I am loving the thought of having dreads. Can anyone offer suggestions or anything? I think i'm going to do the big chop and start with that.

ccg, when I used serum, I found John Frieda frizz ease worked well. In fact, all his prodcuts do.
