Bunny, where did you download the episodes? I want to get in on this!
bunnyb
ahem, illegally, using torrents.
pollystyrene
Oh, bunny, you wouldn't be able to advise me on how to get Flight of the Conchords on such torrents, would you? If fracking HBO would put them up on iTunes, we'd buy a season pass, but they won't. mad.gif

Roseviolet, I totally agree with you. I'm not feeling it. But another thing I know is that Fox wouldn't completely let Joss do his own thing until the 6th episode and I just read a comment that stated that is what is supposed to happen. I have faith in that, because the WB let Joss have complete control and we got an amazing series, Buffy the vampire slayer. If for the first 6 episodes Fox isn't letting Joss do it his own way in order to get average audiences into it, that completely explains why the first 5 episodes are vacuous. I'm going to continue watching because I don't trust Fox, I think Fox will try to do what they want when someone has signed a contract with them many years ago.

So...even though I think right now Eliza's acting is pretty weak, I am holding out for episode 6 because I believe in what Joss can do when he is allowed to do what he wants with a show.
grrrlyouwant
okay, just watched the third ep, and now it seems like it's coming together. not so much info-dumpy, not a whole lot of distractions. but did we really need the "i don't feel anything, i was grown in a lab and i just do what they want me to and don't know who i really am" speech? way to hit us over the head joss.
kittenb
I don't know if I commented before but I am really getting into Dollhouse now. I look forward to it and love watching the episodes. I think everything is tightening up nicely, plot-wise. It even seems that Dushku'a acting is getting better now that she is getting better material to work with.

I got the them song video off of iTunes for free, if anyone is interestested. It is Jonatha Brooks. Short song but the video has some fun clips that we haven't seen yet of Echo meeting the Agent (what-his-name?) Helo. Good fight scenes.

I want to love Dollhouse because I love Joss so I'm going to stick with it but I just wasn't feeling engaged after the first couple episodes. I described it to my friend like eating something you don't really want because it's there. You feel full but you're still hungry. I'm not giving up though. Sometimes Joss requires a bit more chewing so here I go...
roseviolet
Last night I watched the episode of Firefly titled "Our Mrs. Reynolds". SOOO damn good. I hope Joss can start showing us that kind of briilliance again soon.

I think the good episodes of Dollhouse are supposed to start this week (episode 6) so that's encouraging. Too bad it conflicts with the finale of BSG.

that sounds about right. it's getting better, but still not quite there...

i'm holding out for alan tudyk. if he can't save it, then i'm out.
kittenb
Thanks to a posting on IMDB, I realized that all of the Dolls are named with military letters. The Dolls that we know are Sierra, Alpha, Victor, and Echo.

S.A.V.E.

There are some theories that Mellie is a Doll, but I am skeptical. However, if she was, her known name begins with an M, possible opening up the place for a Doll with another E name, thus spelling out M.E.

Don't know what it means, but it means something.
bunnyb
Yup, it's the phonetic alphabet.

I haven't seen last week's episode yet.
starshine
By that theory shouldn't Mellie's name be Mike?
kittenb
There are a few reasons that I don't think that Mellie is a Doll. One is her name. The other (and this is terrible so feel fre to yell at me) is that the Dolls are all physically perfect people. Mellie is built more like me (fantastic rack and all.) Actually, I think that Mellie is the weakest spot of the show. Not the actress, but the character. To have this slightly mousey and chubby woman stalking her hunky neighbor is so annoying that I wish she is a Doll so that at least there is some justification for the character other than to say that chubby women are sad and lonely.
roseviolet
But, Kitten, she could still be a doll. The character that has been imprinted on her could be named Mellie. I believe Echo's name has changed with every new character she has taken on, right?
kittenb
True. I guess we will see. Does anyone know if there will be a second season of Dollhouse?
crazyoldcatlady
i wasn't really thinking Mellie was a doll. i'm not sure what her role is, but i just think she's not (sorry, i am too mentally cloudy now to delineate why and what proof i have).

i don't think she's the weakest character, though. i think the doctor is. i get it, she's a little intimidated and jumpy around the dolls b/c of what happened to her, but i just have a hard time believing she's the only medical person overseeing the health of the dolls. with so much brawn and bravado around her courtesy of the other Dollhouse employees, i can't really understand why she's, well, a scrotum.

i grew up with drs. crusher and scully. if they ever got gashed in the face, they'd start packing a machete, not hiding behind their hair.
bunnyb
Article/interview with Joss about what's to come (mild spoilers).

kitten, I think it's too early for a pick-up yet.
crazyoldcatlady
re: episode six

oh HELLS yeah!
that's what i'm talking about!

spoiler:
you all were right about mellie! and how wicked was the alley fight scene?

forgive me whedon for i have doubted but now i see

eta: i don't know what happened, but the acting in general was significantly better, from everyone. Olivia Williams has such nuance to her Adelle.
kittenb
I am SO GLAD that someone else saw that! I was figureing everyone would be watching BSG.

I am only going to spoiler-code b/c the show just ended about 2 minutes ago.

Now see THAT is a Joss Whedon show. Mellie was a mother fucking rock star and I mean her before they activated her. She was all, "Dude, no! DO not consider me a substitute for some other woman." And then she seduced him when she was sure that it was she that he wanted. Go Mellie!
I was really afraid that after she had sex she was going to get raped/murdered. Just do the horror movie "Punish the girl!" act. I am sorry Joss. I doubted. It won't happen again.
And even aside from Mellie, the whole episode rocked. I love that the whole sexual assault issue was addressed and I think the way that it was done was perfect. Icky yet thought provoking.

Can't wait till next week!!!!!
girltrouble
damn it... i'm torn! i gotta watch the bsg, and i wanna watch teh dollhouse too...
pollystyrene
I know, kitten- definite shift into true Whedonliciousness tonight. Hooray!
roseviolet
Anybody know when the latest episode should pop up on Hulu?
crazyoldcatlady
i don't know when, exactly, they put them up, but i know i did watch one episode on a sunday on hulu that had aired on that friday...

Not sure about Hulu but you could try project free tv: http://www.free-tv-video-online.info/internet/ I find the vids hosted by supernovatube the best right now for loading times and not having time limits (ie. like megavideo)

Great episode. So glad Joss is back.
bunnyb
Just watched last week's Dollhouse: I will echo (hah, that was unintentional) crazyoldcatlady's oh HELLS yeah!

It was exceptionally Whedonesque, Joss was stamped all over it. The dialogue was familiar, that language we all know and love from the other shows (the Rick/Dick joke between Ballard and Mellie reminded me so much of Buffy episodes). The three flowers in a vase scene was worth waiting for, it was that pivotal moment, as was Echo's disclosure of an inside wo/man, that I've been holding out for that reminds me I'm watching a Whedon show.
stargazer
Yes, I agree with this week's epi. While not a Whedon fan (or Sci fi for that matter--my parents are influencing my current watching of these type of shows), I am impressed with the storyline and its ability to hold my attention span which can be the length of a gnat at times.

Since mama is into sci fi and all things Whedon, she thinks Adelle might be working against the Dollhouse. I'm not so sure about that one. Mama couldn't think of a good reason why or what lead to this conclusion, but she just said she had a feeling. Then again, my mom said she figured Mellie was a Doll a couple of episodes ago. I had my suspicions too because nobody is that happy and perky unless you are half droid. smile.gif
roseviolet
I watched the new episode on-line. One word best captures my reaction: YAY!!! Now that's the way it's supposed to be! Fun dialogue from multiple characters (not just Topher), and interesting twists that make me eager to see the next episode. I loved the man-on-the-street interviews, too. I thought they were a great way of tackling the moral quandries & multiple perceptions of the Dollhouse.
Mermeg
I was so relieved ep 6 lived up to the hype more or less! I actually watched it again the next day and it was rather awesome to see it knowing how things would play out and what would be revealed. Being able to re-watch without being boring is definitely a measure of greatness IMHO. I still don't quite have that omg obsession feeling like with Buffy/Angel, but I think it's coming. Next week looks awesome as well! *sends non-cancelling vibes to Fox*

Also, I have to say that I loved Eliza as Rebecca. It was frankly refreshing to see her just panicking and crying like a lot of people probably realistically would, rather than turning into Faith and kicking everyone's ass. Also, porn! I actually lol'ed at that, hee
Mermeg
If it's a week later it doesn't count as a double post right? wink.gif I thought tonight's episode was pretty great, and I was so happy to finally get a good dose of Whedony humor and dialogue. I love all the bits and pieces we're getting about Caroline's past and how she became a doll. And next week looks intense! I'm assuming there's some sort of catch though...it seems way too early in the series for that to be happening so I'm guessing the preview was just chock full of red herrings (I'm being intentionally vague because I'm not quite sure how to use the spoiler tags).

Now if anyone needs me I'll be rummaging through The Drawer of Inappropriate Starches.
girltrouble
one comment: d'you ride your motorcycle in that outfit?

really?

*giggles*
roseviolet
Yeah, that really was quite an outfit. Those thigh highs were tramp-tastic! Who wears something like that out in broad daylight?

So glad that this show is picking up speed & becoming interesting on multiple levels. Since BSG is gone and Heroes is crap, I'm especially grateful.

What makes brown sauce brown, anyway?
girltrouble
lol... yeah, the faux grey pearls added a sophisticated touch to an otherwise uber trampy ensemble. laugh.gif

x-posting with the So and So just died thread...

I just heard that Andy Hallett (Lorne on Angel) passed away from heart disease yesterday. I'm quite shocked, as I didn't even realize he was sick. And he was only 33 (so he was in his 20s on Angel...he seemed so much older). I actually just recently obtained a copy of the Angel soundtrack, on which he sings 2 songs. Now I'm all sad listening to it.

RIP Andy/Lorne sad.gif

pollystyrene
Oh, that's so sad. I'm having a sea breeze in memory of him....looking up what's in a sea breeze....er, I would if I liked cranberry or grapefruit juice.

Sierra's backstory was so much worse than I could have imagined. All I can think about is how he must rent her again and again and just totally hate fuck her. It is gross and evil and makes me nauseous.

I can actually see where Mellie/November might have joined the Dollhouse by choice just to forget her loss.
stargazer
Great article about last week's epi
crazyoldcatlady

dollhouse's demise suspected...sort of
Persiflager
I've caught up now and just watched episode 10. Aww, Topher!

crazyoldcatlady
alan-enver-tahmoh sammich, please.
Persiflager
Nummy wink.gif

Just watched episode 11, and eep! Genuine surprise to me (I've been avoiding spoilers).

Is anyone reading the Buffy season 8 comics?
kittenb
I think that tonight's Dollhouse was a little clunky but it raised some interesting questions. Why did Topher want the doctor to hate him? Why did Ballard have November released but not Echo? If the show continues will we see November again (pls say yes!)
kittenb
And another question: where the hell did Sierra and November GO during the episode?
stargazer
Gawh. Too many things to comment on about tonight's epi. I must watch it again.
pollystyrene
Yeah, I'm thoroughly confused between last week and this week. Seems like the more interesting the show gets, the more disinterested I am. Maybe that should go in the confessions thread. unsure.gif
crazyoldcatlady
well that was a series finale if i've ever seen one. not that it wasn't good, but i felt like the viewers were revealed too much in the necessity of tying up (some) loose ends before cancellation. that being said, we still don't know some things (why is ballard still so obsessed with caroline? what happens to victor?)

random thoughts based on one half-assed viewing (i'm with you, star):

kittenb, i didn't even realize that sierra and november never "came back" until you posted! wtf? and where is ivy? is she only around when the plot requires it? ... and i assumed ballard let november go because he felt guilty. i hope she/the show comes back.

anyone think echo's "anything is possible, now that we have a black president" thing seemed out of place, somewhat after-school-specially in the context of the scene?

the doctor totally was the inside person slipping ballard messages imho- or was that obvious? i always read the re-caps on i09 and realize how much i miss, and how much i interpreted was wrong. i think the doctor-hating-topher thing was just metaphorical, but who knows. maybe saunders is his dad or some shit. i feel the need to rewatch all the episodes and think of saunders in the context of a man inhabiting the body. yay gender binary!

ballard "saves" the girl('s wedge). yawn. she's a 38-person ninja-dexterity machine and she can't scramble across the rod without knocking it off? do i sound too much like a fanboy now?

i still think the whole series is a fun mindfuck, with its moral implications etc, but the fat needs trimmed if the series continues. but, i still can't stand Eliza Dushku and Her Amazing Acting Abilities (sounds like a circus side show).
crazyoldcatlady
second season renewal!!!!!!

i'll just have to find something else to be cynical about wink.gif
Persiflager
Woohoo!

I've watched the finale now cocl, and agree with you about Echo's after-school special comment - very awkward in the context.

Also, what was up with the Whisky/Alpha connection when they were actives ?

With Sierra and November, I think they were referred to when Ballard/Boyd called Topher about San Pedro and said "that's why your bounty-hunters haven't been able to find her".

Yay, I can use spoiler text! biggrin.gif

From the highly disreputable IMDb:

"Buffy The Vampire Slayer is heading back to the big screen with a new movie based on the hit franchise.

The character, most famously played by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the hit TV series, was originally introduced in the 1992 movie of the same name, starring Kristy Swanson.

The following TV show ran for six years before coming to an end in 2003.

And now the blood-sucking series could be heading back to the big screen with a brand new vampire slayer.

Director Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original film and executive produced the TV programme, owns the rights to the Buffy brand and is planning to reboot the franchise for cinemas, replacing Gellar and the rest of the cast with new actors to fight demons in a different generation.

Kuzui tells the Hollywood Reporter, 'Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this.'"

So basically, he ruined the first movie & now wants another go at cocking it all up.
