lol, wow. this whole time i had no idea it actually made sense! still not a good commercial tho
jsmith
Quiznos is pathetic. Have y'all seen that ad where the oven is talking to the worker, telling him "put it in me"? and then when the guy says "only 4 dollars" it tells him "say it sexier." STUPID.
girltrouble
i know i'm in the minority, but i like it. it's subversive, so i can't help but love it. but they do over play it, and the blander versions are stupid.
snow white
i like how he says it sexy, he gets totally into it. but the whole 'put it in me' thing is weird bc the oven has a man voice....but who am i to judge?
girltrouble
that's what i like about it, that's what makes it so subversive-- that it has a man voice. instead of pushing the idea of hetro-normative sex forward, it goes for gay sex. i love that it's even called "the torpedo" and it's super phallic. plus i love that he seems unable to resist it.
missladyj
gt,
I never thought of that ad that way. I always thought it was a rip off on 2001 and Hal with all the red lights. I am interested to watch it again with this new perspective.
girltrouble
heh. i fell instantly in love with it. it's much more complex than you'd think first blush. but the casting of male/male disrupts the normal dynamic of a "sexy" commercial. usually the female would be the sex object, but since both are male that is subversive. second, the one who is acting dominant-- telling someone what to do, is the "receptive" male, so that ends up being subversive too. then there is the actual guy, he ends up being the sexual "object" but he is the male "active"-- the one with the phallus/penis/sandwich...... so even without casting, the physical male-bodied-male is the sex object. he is told to say it "sexier" and told what to do.

now, let's say that you change the casting in the way that we would expect-- changing it to a more hetero-normative commercial.

female is the passive sex object, first, the oven is a woman. now, even so, as i said, she is the one who is in control, she is dominant, she is telling the male-bodied-male what to do. he is still the sex object, while physically she would be "receptive" the story still makes her dominant.

now, let's change it but make the male-bodied-male, female bodied. or, in more simple terms, lets make the guy, the cook a woman, but return the oven to it's male voice. in this case it turns into a case of "pegging" the woman may be 'strapping on' a sandwich/phallus, but the relationship is not hetro-normative, because she has the phallus, and he is receptive. again, the paradigm is queered, and subversive.

even if both characters are female, it is the receptive/dominant relationship that is what makes the commercial subversive.

and i have just realized what a serious theory dork i am, although, in my defense, the phrase "strapping on' a sandwich/phallus" is terribly fun to type and makes me laugh out loud...
prophecy_grrl
wow, I have not seen the Quizno's ad, but now I really want to.

Has anyone seen the Schick "mow the lawn" commercial? It's been making the rounds on the interwebs. I don't where to begin - the problematic racial subtext, the idea that women think shaving their pubes is the most fun ever, the truly bizarre and not so veiled innuendos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBkR09sP4T4 There's an American commercial for the same product, not as over the top, but still creepy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAk77Kr_OwQ

Also, Sarah Haskins takes on Carl's Jr http://current.com/items/89939735/sarah_ha...n_carl_s_jr.htm
flanker_ji
Oh, wow. I'm officially not ready for bush-trimming commercials. Eesh.
girltrouble
um.... who exactly is the spongebob/sir mix-a-lot "squarebutts" burger king commercial aimed at, exactly?
i don't know who their ad company is, but they need to be fired. i'm not bugged by the big headed jack-in-the-box rip off king, but their work of the last few years have been in bad taste. first the "i am man hear me roar" commercial, to re working "baby got back" for kids.... these people, and their ads are horrible.
kittenb
Where does that commercial air? It seems to me that it was made simply to get people on the internet annoyed.
stargazer
gt, i saw the burger king commercial you are talking about. terribly annoying.

you know what commercial really gets to me? it is a commerical for joe's crab shack. at a table sit 2 men and 1 woman in the commerical. the men have open plates. the woman gets her dish served with a lid, or top, on it. one of the guys say, "take off your top!" the girl looks confused. he says again, "take off your top!" she realizes he means the top of her dish. *insert laughter* um, yeah. not funny. at all.
girltrouble
i've seen it a couple of times. i don't really watch commercials/movies on my 'puter or do the youtube thing, so if i've seen it, it's been on tv/cable. it's been on in the afternoon/primetime, but it advertises for kid's meals, so one would think it's aimed at kids, but it's a remake of that infamous "baby got back" video, but with women wearing squarebutts. get it? square pants? square butts? ugh.

and yeah star. that commercial is bad.
auralpoison
Crispin Porter + Bogusky do the Burger Kings ads, I know somebody that works in their Boulder office.

They're also responsible for those weird Seinfeld/Gates commercials that tanked so spectacularly last fall.
kittenb
I finally saw the BK/SpongeBob ad this morning. At first, I was annoyed. The I realized that the whole commercial was to sell kid's meals! Now I am totally disgusted.
Thank you BK for teaching the youngest of children to sexually objectify adult women. What the fuck?
I am also really dissapointed in the makers of SpongeBob for approving that ad.
snow white
i love the spongebob commercial, i think it's hilarious. i still have it stuck in my head.

i also get a huge kick out of the shick razor and snatch trimmer. i bought one a few weeks ago and love it. soo much easier.
snow white
i swear i am a thread killer! i think the whole idea behind the spongebob commercial is to grab the attention of the adult with the young kid, b/c young kids don't remember the "i like big butts" craze. the commercial is advertising a 99 cent kids meal with purchase of a value meal.

aaaannnnyyyway, shit, i forgot what commercial is getting on my nerves now. i just had it my head now it's replaced with square butts. i'm sure i'll remember once i turn the tube back on.
girltrouble
nah, these things go in phases, snow.

but the thing i don't get about the bk commercial, is who is it aimed at? i mean, i know that adults get the joke, and it's usually aired in the evening on more adult shows, but why would it make them buy kids meals? even if they do have kids? and kids don't really see it or get the joke. it seems like they are missing their audience for which ever audience they are aiming at.
snow white
has anyone noticed fiber is the new yogurt?
hellotampon
I am so done with the "5 dollar footlongs" jingle. stfu already.
jsmith
"The bad news is, Directv is killing us with more tv and less money. The good news is, there's no more bad news!"
BAHAHAHA! I'm going to start saying that "there is no more bad news" That's hilarious.
girltrouble
tampon, i am sooooo with you about the $5 foot long thing-- and-- the whole, "let's get 'regular people' to sing our jingle."

no, no, no.

and can i back a semi over the 'freecreditreport.com' band? pleeeeeeeeeeeease?
lilacwine13
Only if I can run them over first, gt.
girltrouble
in rare cases like this, lilac, i don't mind sharing. please, go first!
lilacwine13
Cool, let me rent the truck...

I finally saw the Burger King square butt ads and I do not get them at all. Plus the King creeps me out.

The Swiffer ads with the stalking mops and brooms can go away now, I'm getting fed up with them.
jami
the new Carl's Jr ad..... one guy and a cow. and he's dancin' and gyrating and bumping into the back end of the cow. then there's another guy and another cow. and he's doing the same thing!!!
ends up it's for a new milkshake.
molesting bovine for tv. yeeech.
at least it's not the boner for Arby's

I second that. I always thought those ads were beyond dumb, and now it's getting way ridiculous.
I really like that Euphoria by Calvin Klein ad. The music is b-e-a-u-tiful. Though, I wish they'd show more of the male model.
girltrouble
i love the orville reddenbocker ads they are adorable. thank you for getting rid of the creepy robo-bocker.
deschatsrouge
I'm sick to death of the kidzbop commercials. They are creepy. Preteen boys and girls singing very adult songs and dancing somewhat provocatively. Every time I see it I wonder how many pedophiles are watching at that moment and jerking off.
missladyj
The Burger KIng ad with the KIngons who take the dudes girlfriend.

I am a fan of the whopper but no more. There is a five guys near me. they will get all of my greasy cheeseburger cravings from now on.
girltrouble
forget what i said about the quiznos ad. they edited it down to a meaningless nub. booo!

and des...i agree...ick.

locally in seattle a cut rate insurance company, vern fonk has done silly ads for years. here is their parody of the sham wow, now dubbed, the 'vern wow'
deschatsrouge
Any commercial where Billy Mayes is shouting at me. Why does he have to shout?
candycane_girl
HE DOES IT SO THAT WE WILL PAY ATTENTION TO THE PRODUCT BEING ADVERTISED!!

Sorry, I had to.

There are commercials on the Canadian channel Much Music for their music video awards show. The ads inexplicably just show a bunch of young people walking naked in slow motion with all of their junk pixeled. I don't know if Much Music is trying to be edgy or what but it's just stupid.

I find that Zyrtec commercial where the woman can't go outside and ride her bicycle until she takes allergy medication pretty annoying. The narrator is talking to the bicycle in very ordinary language about how she misses it, but the way she reads it sounds like she's trying to sound poetic. It's stupid.

There's another Zyrtec commerical like that about a man and his fishing pole. It's really dumb.

I kept seeing that porn Hardee's commerical with Padma lately.
SUPERLUVER
well, i must say that i love the oreo cookie straw commercial with the kid and the baby elephant drinking milk. the kid finishes his and eats the cookie straw and the elephant just has his trunk and no cookie straw, and he gets mad and storms off. the little kid says 'oh grow up brandon!' but the first time i thought he said 'oh grow up brandy!' and for some reason it struck me as hilarious!! yay for animals in commercials, i say! laugh.gif
hellotampon
The Dove hair-repairing stuff ad where they use the chunks of hair as paintbrushes is so ridiculous I don't know where to start.
SUPERLUVER
oh! i dont know how i forgot about this, but is anyone really perturbed by the disgusting pictures that seem to be on the banners and side banners of yahoo's website all the time?! right now its nasty upclose pictures of yellow teeth next to white teeth. sometimes its animated stomach fat jiggling...wtf?
auralpoison
The Cottonelle tp commercials with Zach Braff giving a toothachingly sacharrine voice to a little yellow lab puppy. "I'm in the lap of luxury!"

This isn't a commercial, but I was watching Family Guy last night and one of the cutaways really made my blood boil. Someone made a comment about being even more useless than Aquaman, and they cut to a beach scene where a woman is being chased by a rapist, who catches and jumps on her. She starts calling for help, and "aquaman" pops out of the ocean saying something like "you're lucky you're not doing that in the water, because I would stop you" and the banter goes on and on and eventually she cries help one more time and "aquaman" says "well, maybe you shouldn't have led him on."
WHAT KIND OF BULLSHIT IS THAT??? What the hell is the matter with the son of a bitch who came up with that? How is that in any way funny? It's pretty maddening to me that some people find the idea of rape funny. I want to see any prick who wants to laugh about it have it done to him.
I mean, am I wrong about this? Aren't there just some things that are not funny and should not be treated so lightly?

Since this is not commercial related, but television related, I'm moving the conversation over to the television thread.
hellotampon
Olay Regenerist- start saying the word cream! And the smiling "coy" model is pretty irritating too.
hellotampon
Oh and the Benefiber commercial with all the supermodels... "fibah" is so fashionable. "Fibah" will make you 6 feet tall and 80 pounds with washboard abs and have a Swedish accent. Fibah, fibah, fibah.
Christine Nectarine
the current Bud Light Lime commercial (i think it might be a Canadian version since the product is newly launched here)

i know beer commercials are easy and obvious targets, but seriously, they've got a girl in a sundress who looks all of 13, jumping through a sprinkler! tell me they are not targeting youth and infantalizing women!
candycane_girl
There is some horrible ad for McDonald's right now with this guy singing in a horribly obnoxious fake English accent a song about how it's summer and he's on holiday and it's done to the tune of Deck the Halls.

The Wendy's ad for their milkshakes that has an ice cream truck jingle playing in the background over and over and over....

bloody awful, the both of them! did you notice too how the drinks in the mcdonalds ad are all in cups with coke/sprite logos on them? don't mcdonalds cups have mcdonalds logos on them? not to mention the street hockey goalie tips his cup upside down like a sports bottle, and there is no way one of those flimsy plastic lids would stay on if you did that! i could be wrong, it's been years since i've actually been IN a mcdonalds. wink.gif
freckleface7
the "hunting for food bargins' commerical for Food Lion is freakin' ANNOYING as HELL.

however, the new Prius commerical w/ the people as shapes or however you'd want to put it, is pretty genius.
I think it's a take off from the Olympics but that's ok! it's still creative & beautiful & I have not gotten tired of it yet . there's another product doing something similar now in another commerical but have only seen it maybe once.

it's refreshing to see something new & semi-original for a change.
muddyeyes
The Progressive commercials. They irk my mom. Now, they irk me. blink.gif
crazyoldcatlady
here's an ad campaign that's seriously FUKT.

i got a letter in the mail today, hand written address, no return address, stamped in California.

the inside has a newspaper clipping in it, with a post-it that says, "(my name)- Are these guys for real? -Z"
that. was. it.

after running through the possibilities ranging from stalker to mega-stalker, i searched to see what newspaper it was from, read the article (which skewered toward an ad) and realized it was some gorilla marketing. buried in the article, there was an 800 number. i called and asked them wtf was this shit (well, i was actually polite), and they confirmed that it was an ad thing.

but that is some fucked up shit. what if i were some little old lady with anxiety issues and didn't know what the fuck was going on??
candycane_girl
COCL that is really fucked. I can't even imagine what it would be like for someone who is really paranoid to receive mail like that. It's weird how sometimes guerrilla marketing can be spot on and other times it's just a really sad failed attempt at being innovative.

This isn't a specific ad but it's pissing me off. Lately it seems like no matter what channel I'm on the program I'm watching is at a totally normal volume and as soon as the commercials come on the volume spikes way up! It's especially annoying because I usually leave the room when ads come on and suddenly the tv is blasting and I don't want to be the jerk in the building who watches tv at too high a volume.
