i hate the cheerios commercial with the donovan song that has the kids playing in the cheerios like they're innertubes.....i love that song and i have nothing against cheerios, but they're so obviously cgi bodies with real video heads and it CREEPS ME THE FUCK OUT. i hate the way cgi people move. i don't think we have mastered it yet for humans, and i don't think we should use it publicly until we have. the end.
wombat
well FINE why don't you go marry DENNY'S! is the reply I imagine rolleyes.gif
pinkpoodle
No shit. If that guy had made that Denny's comment around me, I woulda stuffed a sausage in his pie hole (and other not-so-comfy places).
pepper
hmm, yes. denny's doesn't care if you die of a heart attack or grow too large to fit in the car. unless that means that you can't Get to a denny's. in which case i imagine they might offer shuttle service. or delivery.
lilacwine13
So does that mean Denny's believes you deserve a heart attack?

Holy eff....y'know, I never watch TV, but when I do, there's always something. Don't know if this has been posted yet, but what is up with the Dairy Queen ad for the chili burger, or whatever it is? In the ad, this young woman asks for a bite of her boyfriend's burger, and then afterwards slides down on the sofa like Al Bundy, slides her hand in the waistband of her trousers, and says, "Dude, pull my finger." And then the slogan comes up..."It'll make a man out of you."
pepper
i JUST SAW THAT!! but more disturbing was the one right after. i posted in outrage in the f thread just now. gah, totally appaling.
xexyz
I think I was in 5th grade that last time I asked someone to "pull my finger"

I guess I'm just not a man.

I usually mute commercials, so I don't have to hear the wittiness (ha!) of commercials like the DQ one, but I did still have to look at the close-up of what was probably the most un-appetizing chili I've ever seen. Le Boy and I both sat there, mouths agape, at this nasty commercial. We couldn't tell if that was what the chili looked like before or after it was eaten. It was disgusting.

i loved the first couple of da-iry milk ads with the aliens (hilarious! clever!) but the latest one pisses me off; the ruler of whatever planet it is is a woman, and the attendant comes to her to say that they've found the magic elixir that eliminates symptoms of pms. he acts all meek cos she yells at him cos, obviously, she's pmsing. ew. why they gotta take that cheap shot? really?
lunia666
Has anybody seen that car ad. Where the dad and mom and two perfect kids go to the park etc... Then at the end the dads hugging the kids looks at the mom says "thanks for leting me go this weekend" blink.gif the kids jump back in the car and she drives away. WTF when i first saw this I laughed my head off. laugh.gif
mouse
lunia, i always thought that ad was about a separated family.
pollystyrene
That's what I thought too, and I thought, "oh how nice that they're recognizing one type of the non-traditional families that make up the majority of all families in the US."
pinkpoodle
I thought the guy said "I'll see you guys next weekend."

Has anyone seen the Orbitz commercial with the lesbian couple and the straight couple and they're both trying to find a hotel room because their plane isn't coming in? When the lesbian couple finds a vacancy and wins "Take on Orbitz" they give eachother the most awkward looking, unpleasant congratulatory kiss I've ever seen. It's not like they have to French or anything, but couldn't they at least look like they're not going to go backstage and puke when it's over? One little peck on the lips--it's not gonna kill you.

eew i know! i was like wtf is that? to me it looks like the mouth had a horrid herpes outbreak. mmm....nothing makes me think delicious chili more than herpes.
zora
When are cleaning product commercials going to show men cleaning? I haven't seen a single one. Except for Brawny. But those don't really count.
pinkpoodle
I haven't seen this Orbitz commercial at all! I wonder if they even air it here (Minnesota). Commercials outside of the U.S. seem to be a little racier for some reason.

i hate the nike commercial that starts out with the history class and none of the football players know about what happened to napoleon, but then they win the game that night and the tagline is something like "nothing matters but football".

yeah. cos, number one, we totally need tv telling us that sports are more important than school, and number two, way to cling to the stereotype that jocks are dumb. awesome!
crazyoldcatlady
zora, that reminds me of some PBS thing i saw a loooong time ago about girls and advertising, and how these teens were writing companies about their sexist cleaning ads. one girl wrote Dawn (or one of the dishsoap companies) about the commercial where "...women everywhere are throwing out thier gloves...". the girl wanted to know why no men were doing dishes, because her dad does them. Dawn responded by changing the commercial.

how? they kept all the women in the commercial but changed the tag to "PEOPLE everywhere..."

ever since then, i can't help but notice all those cleaning commercials.
anna k
Re: Jocks are dumb: at my high school in Long Island, it was required for sports players to receive good marks to remain on the team. Many of the athletes excelled in academics as well.

The new Brawny commercial was creepy as ever. The guy looked like a porno Patrick Warburton cradling a puppy with the voice of Jeff Stryker.
zora
See, I actually love the Brawny commercials. I think they are hilarious. But they are also goofy, silly ads and not real men cleaning.
xexyz
Has anyone seen the Cingular commercial with the mom and daughter having a typical parent-teenager fight, but everything they say is the exact opposite? I love that commercial. biggrin.gif
mouse
xexyz, i thought that was totally clever at first, but then they started airing it like, every other commercial and now it's driving me crazy!

i remember reading an article a few years back about how the brawny guy got an updated makeover--they thought the old one (blonde hair, moustache) was too seventies and too gay. hahahah.
anna k
It is a clever commercial, one that I didn't notice the nice things being said because it sounded like bickering to one ear listening.

"It's so small! I really like it! Why is it always about what I want?"
"Do you have any idea how much this is not going to cost me?"
"You never hated me, and you never will."
"You are the most grateful little . . ."
the_geiger
Has anyone seen those commercials for the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD? There's this one line that really bothers me, when the little girl says "I want a pet Wookie."

WTF? Chewbacca is not Han Solo's pet! Wookies are sentient beings deserving of respect and recognition as such! The idea that one can own another sentient being is an outrage! Have we learned nothing from the Galactic Empire's policy of genocide and slavery enacted against countless non-human species?

...And yes, I did read a few too many Star Wars books as a kid.
pepper
wow. that would never even have crossed my mind. you're an interesting cat my friend.
lilacwine13
Look on the bright side, at least she's not saying "I want a pet Ewok." tongue.gif

pinkpoodle
"Wookies are sentient beings deserving of respect and recognition" Bwahahahaha!!!
mouse
gotta say, that commercial is kind of annoying though cos the boys are all "the action is awesome! the characters are super cool!" and all the girl wants is something to mother. blech.

that commercial for the plasma tv where the guy stares at it for so long that he leaves the car waxer on, water pours down the stairs, the dog gets into the garbage etc.....they changed it. they started running a different version; the one they used to run had a shot where it showed an unsupervised baby who had gotten into the scotch tape (which frankly was pretty hilarious), and now they don't show that part. i wonder if people complained.
pollystyrene
Probably just like people complained about the banned Ikea commercial that Humanist posted in CBC a few days ago- this woman's running around her messy house, digging through piles of laundry and papers...finally she lifts up some laundry and there's a baby underneath, happy and laughing.....it was for their organizational products, obviously.

(Maude Flander's voice): "Won't somebody pleeeease think of the children!!"
mouse
speakin of ikea commercials.....can we all jump for joy at the latest one that says "why can't sofas come in flavors, just like families?" and they show a gay couple and their little girl. oh, progressive sweden, god bless ya.
thingsarenice
The Charmin commercials with the cartoon bears who enjoy wiping their butts more than I would care to know. Cartoon without a butthole or not, I don't want to see the satisfied look on your face when you wipe your poopy butt.
zora
Wookies suffered greatly under the Old Republic and the Empire. Poor enslaved folk.

The Happy Peanut Song
over chocolate-covered mountaintops and waterfalllls of caaaaaaaaaramel,
prancing nougat in the meadows
sings a song of satisfaction
toooooooooooo the world.

The World!
the_geiger
Actually, it's "over chocolate-covered mountaintops and waterfalls of caramel"

But I still enjoyed being serenaded by you.
DatGoofyBastard
How can you NOT love that song.
Besides, Snickers are quite nutritional.

Speaking of really bad ads, I am kinda getting sick of the girls gone wild infomercials. Seriously. These videos are horrible. How many times can you watch a drunken slut being persuaded by a free shirt and a 20 spot?? Watching these movies are horrible anyways. If I actually bought a video I'd be pissed.
pinkpoodle
I am soooooo sick of pharmaceutical and financial planning ads that target aging baby-boomers with the whole "you're different than your parents were at your age" and "you're the generation that changed the world" thing. It especially drives me bonkers when they play songs like "Magic Bus" by The Who or "Blue Sky" by the Allman Bros. Seriously, that osteoporosis ad has destroyed Blue Sky for me. All I can think when I watch those ads is, "face it people--you're gonna get old and crusty and wear diapers like everyone else!! Deal with it!!!" I suppose it's mostly the advertisers who are trying to sell that idea, but still...
mouse
seriously, pood.

magic bus? really?
magic bland suburbia suv. bleagh.
pinkpoodle
Yeah, more like the metro-mobility bus from the nursing home to the drug store.
anna k
Those ads are corny, especially featuring Dennis Hopper, who is going on 70 and still idolized as the "rebel" actor. I watched a documentary about the "rebel" actors of the 1970s (Hopper, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern, Peter Fonda), and they all just all seemed like jackasses with high pretensions of "art." Michelle Phillips was passed around like a blow-up doll, and there was so much egocentric jerking-off that I couldn't take any of them seriously.

My dad was into that rock music (he even named me after a Southern rock song) and might not want to view himself as old, but he'll be turning 54 soon. My mom was always old-fashioned and traditional, so I don't think she cares about getting old (she's 57).
pinkpoodle
Jessica, Melissa, or Martha??!! wink.gif I'm soooooooooooooooo pissed that they Allman Bros. stuff is used to sell pills and cell phone bars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whores!! They're all whores--the advertisers, the manufacturers/vendors, the bands, sigh....it's so sad. It's all so ironic, too.
anna k
Melissa. I was embarassed by it as a kid, because my dad would play it and sing along, "For sweeet Melisssa." Now I heard it in a cell phone ad last year and a scene in Brokeback Mountain. It was nice to hear it again, even though I don't like it being too commercialized. I preferred the surprise I had when I heard it rarely and didn't recognize it until my name came up, like a ghost creeping up on me.
pollystyrene
Aww, my BGP was named after that song, too. She got the band at her wedding to play it and she danced with her mom to it. She was a little drunk and it was really cute.
pinkpoodle
See, it doesn't bother me so much when music is used in movies, as long as it enhances the scene. But when a song like Melissa is used in a cell phone ad--that's just stupid. I'm sure it's all Gregg Allman's fault or maybe Dickey Betts'. Grrr...I'm still bitter about Blue Sky.

I wish I knew more about how the music rights/advertisement thing worked and who exactly is saying, "sure, you can use our song." I'm just really thankful that Johnny Cash's family told the Preparation H people to fuck off when they wanted to use "Ring of Fire" in one of their ads.

I think regardless of the commercialism of the music, It also can serve as an introduction for many into truly great bands like the Allman bros, Zep and The Who. The trick is to let the kids know there's more to music than My Humps and BootyBootyBootyBootyBootyBooty.

I plan on using Classical cover cd's of Led Zepplin, ACDC and KISS for my wedding and receptiopn, that way i can have the music I like to listen to playing during the proceedings...LOL
pinkpoodle
True, but many of those kids will just associate those songs with the ads. I'm trying to think of an example of a song that I didn't realize was an older song until later in life. Hmmmm...I'll have to get back to you on that one.

What bugs the shit outta me is the irony behind most music in advertising. The song "For the Love of Money" by the O'Jays is a huge statement against "the almighty dollar," but now it's used in financial ads and as a theme song for The Apprentice. For some reason, the O'Jays decided to cash in on that song, which is fucking hilarious! Notice how in these ads, they conveniently leave out the line about money being the "root of all evil!" laugh.gif

I suppose they're just assuming that the general population is stupid enough not to notice or pay attention to the meaning behind these songs, which is probably true.

I'm still pissed off about Blue Sky.
pollystyrene
I'm pretty sure the musicians themselves have little to no control over it. I know Joey Ramone wasn't consulted when they used that song in the cell phone ad a couple years ago, and Iggy Pop had nothing to do with Lust for Life being in the cruise ship commercial, either.

Right, poodle, like Mercedes-Benz using the Janis Joplin song a few years ago....um, do they not get the irony?!?!?!
DatGoofyBastard
Polly and pnky are right....

Sadly, they target those simple people in life...you know the ones...those who get sucked into the media frenzy of things like that damn new song my John Mayer....Just substitute the words with Sexual healing and it's a perfect fit.

Fact is, these ads target the dumbed down crowd that watch and believe everything they see and hear and if their favorite band is playing underneath those crafty ads, the better.

Consider yourselves lucky for not buying into the mainstream media hype. I work in the media and I can't tell you how many stupid people are out there.

My prior point was one I have hope in...Sadly if it weren't for Austin powers I wouldn't have been introduced to Burt Bacharach...Lizard licks hsi eyeball....
