It's easy to make your own sugar "wax". Mix 1 c sugar with the juice of one lemon and enough water to make it soupy. Boil slowly and carefully, stirring constantly, in a stainless pan until you see the faintest bit of caramel color. Take it off the heat immediately.

I always have a larger pan full of ice just in case I don't catch the sugar the second it begins to color--cool the outside of the sugaring pan with the ice to stop the cooking.

Once the sugar is cool enough, try a bit on your skin. It took me about three tries to get the perfect mixture, cooked exactly right.

Works great for "waxing" facial hair (I use it on my furry eyebrows) and legs.

I leave my pits furry--love the feeling. As for my twat, I keep it trimmed. As one ages, one's hair thins and turns (Yikes!) white down there. Startling, if you aren't expecting this post-menopausal change.

I hear that you can sugar yourself (or have your girlfriend do it for you), but I'm not into that amount of pain. Also, the child porn aspects of it freak me out.

My first wax was painful. I screamed as if I was in labor. I was so embarrassed! The waxer was laughing at me and knew everyone in the facility heard me scream. I recomend trimming the pubic hairs before waxing especially if you have curly or coarse hair. Even though waxing is mild torture, its better than shaving.

For my 23rd b-day, my husband is getting me a session of laser hair removal!! I just got a new job so I finally feel like I can afford to get this done. I'm going to get my legs first, but eventually I want my bikini area too. I'm so excited...I'll let you girls know how it goes...

My traumatizing waxing story for you all: My sister is an aestician (fancy word for waxer/facialist) and so I get hooked up with the waxing all the time. This waxing occassion was a special one. I stayed at my sisters because the next morning I was flying out for my first visit to NYC to meet up with this guy I really liked!! I decided to wax my lip the night before and about a minute afterward I knew something was wrong. I mentioned it to my sister and she was like, "Oh, its nothing you're fine." We went to bed and it was burning like hell!! I got up and went to the bathroom only to find I had a red mark resembling that of Hitlers mustache. I screamed at my sister and she came in and confirmed, "Oh yep, looks like some skin ripped off..." I couldnt believe it!! I arrived in NYC and I couldn't even look at my guy! It was horrifying. Finally, I looked at him and told what happened, which he thought was hilarious. The rest of the weekend I would catch him staring down at my lip with a little smirk and every picture has that mark there as a reminder. And who knows what his friends though was going on! Needless to say, I haven't waxed since.

OMG girl friend... that is awful! I had a tear in my eye for you -- the skin ripping.. OMG! I have the little wax-at-home strips or whatever because my hormones cause these pesky hairs on my chin. They're pretty humiliating. But anyway, waxing hurts like hell I feel your pain. I cannot even imagine what you went through hun.
starship
i tried a bikini wax with cold, pre-prepared strips at home and it was awful. Not so much the pain but the fuss and end product. Im not sure what I was doing wrong as i followed the instructions and everything but it didnt seem to work properly and was just really difficult. I made the mistake of going over one part twice and ended up with red dots for days where the hair folicles would be :/. Does anyone have any advice for diy waxing or should it just be left to the professionals fullstop?
newo_ikkin
I got my legs waxed a while ago, then thought it seemed simple enough to do it myself. I got the bottom half of one leg done and was exhausted! Its just faster and easier to have someone else do it. It may be more expensive, but I think it's worth it.

And I was really pleased with the results of my underarm wax. It took a couple weeks for it to grow back, and they're so sparse! Getting it done again tomorrow before I go see my boy this weekend.

I went to the first session of laser treatments for my legs last night. They had two nurses...one for each leg so it only took about 50 minutes to do. Usually they start people on a 26 laser strength...but I apparently have a higher pain threshold and went up to 33. It hurt some around the bottom part of my legs (sort of a pinching feeling) but I don't think I'll use numbing cream. Tonight, however, I'm going to get my bikini area lasered...and I will most likely be getting numbing cream for that in the near future...haha. Wish me luck! I'm nervous...
hellotampon
I would love not to shave. I think my leg hair below the knee is a little too thick and dark for me to be comfortable with, and I heard that after you wax a few times it kills off some follicles. I thought maybe if I wax enough times the hair will thin out and I'll be more comfortable with it. But that shit hurts! And I think armpit hair is cool, but as soon as it grows out of that ugly stubbly stage, I start getting deodorant buildup in the hair and they smell. I end up getting annoyed and shave it off. I tried waxing one armpit to see if the hair would grow back thinner and less hot/stinky, and that really hurt. Oh my god. Maybe I'm just a baby or maybe you shouldn't wax your own pits at home but that was awful.
konphusion26
My silly behind went out and bought some Nad's thinking oh this will be cool to try- i hate shaving, and Nair itches like crazy. Horrible idea. Let me just say, it hurt like hell. I just wasted money because I cannot do it myself. I ended up with a bruise on my thigh from where I had to keep ripping it off so many times. My hair is so coarse, I couldn't finish... WHY does beauty have to hurt so??? lol
newo_ikkin
HT I tried doing my own underarms at home and couldn't believe how painful it was. My experience at the salon was 10x better and it definitely does thin it out. I can tell because I ran out of money so I've gone back to shaving and hate how much thicker it is now.
pherber
The problem with waxing is, that you need both hands, beause the skin needs to be be pulled (stretched?) taut, so it won't hurt so much.
Waxing underarms, you obviously only have one hand.
It's possible, though, I've used the very small cold wax strips, that are meant to be used for the bikini line.
With those, you can't remove all hair at once, only a small section, so you need to have a go several times.
The thing with armpit hair is, that it grows in two directions, the lower half grows downwards, so in this part, you pull the strip upwards, and on the top half, it's the other way round.
Sounds like a lot of hassle, but it's not so painful like that.
I hope, I could desribe it well enough in English. smile.gif

PS: Important: only use cold wax strips, hot wax under arms=torture!

ETA:
I made a little illustration, that hopefully explains it better: wink.gif

...sorry for abusing a breast cancer awareness pic (from the survey thread) for such a frivolous purpose. I was too lazy to google...
sassy
pherber: Nice picture! Haha.

I've now been to three sessions of laser hair removal on my bikini (I'm getting it all off) and my legs. It's amazing! I have been using the numbing cream now since they go up to a higher laser strength each time. There are about 8-10 treatments total, but my hair is already really thin and it grows super slow now. I only have $350 left to pay off and I might get my underarms or the tops of my feet done next. If you guys have the money, I think it's totally worth it. I've shaved and waxed and it's just too time consuming for me. Plus, my skin is really sensitive so I always get bumpy.
culturehandy
I recommend sugaring, it's sort of like waxing, but the concoction is better for you. It's sugar, water and lemon juice. It's more natural than waxing, doesn't hurt as much. My hair always grew at a snails pace, but now even more so. And it does grow back slower and thinner.
obelix2
Sassy- Isn't laser wonderful? Before I started, I had enough facial hair for a full goatee (but I never let it grow out) and a goodie trail that connected my pubes to my bellybutton with no change in coarseness. I'm blonde, but covered with thick black body hair. I could never afford to have it done on my legs, but it worked miracles on my face and stomach.

Waxing. Ouch. I wax my 'stache, but even that takes several seconds of pumping myself up to get the courage to pull.
damona
does anybody just not shave/wax/sugar/laser/whatever? i stopped shaving my legs probably about 6-8 weeks ago. i am a natural strawberry blonde and my body hair is about that same, maybe a little more red. i have never shaved my pits my entire life. i hate shaving my legs. i get these red itchy bumps all the time on my legs, but the last month or so, they are gone! it must be from shaving that i get them. but now my guy is after me to shave and he's been nagging about it for a week now. i keep telling him that i stopped because of the red, itchy, sore bumps and he just keeps nagging! my leg hair is somewhat thin and soft and light coloured, i really don't see what the big deal is, but he is just freakin' out over it!
sassy
Obelix: Are you done with your laser treatments? I can't wait to be done with mine and have my hair gone for good! Has any of your hair come back, if you're done? My legs and bikini came in a package together so I really didn't think it was that expensive. Worth it to me!

As for not shaving, etc...I couldn't do it. I hate body hair on myself. I wish I had blonde body hair so I didn't have to shave so much, but mine is all dark. sad.gif
sybarite
I'm hoping to get my little 'tache lasered in the next year or so. It's not really a problem, but bleaching it annoys me.

Damona, it depends. Now I'm settled with the bf, I tend to shave underarms maybe once a week or so, or before I go to the gym or pool. Where I live is kind of conservative, and I already get some weird looks for going out without a bra. Also, the bf likes it when I shave under my arms.

My leg hair has always been pretty light, so I really only shave that once a month or so, but again, the bf likes smooth legs. Sometimes I can't be bothered but I make an effort sometimes. To be clear, he has never asked me to shave (he could guess the response), but aesthetically he prefers it I think, just as I prefer him without a beard.

These days I only get a bikini wax before I go on a beach vacation.
culturehandy
the reason I like my cooch sugared is that it makes sex sooooo much messier, so to speak. When I get wet it gets everywhere, and I love that.

I also am not a fan of body hair on myself. I've always been like that.

What about no body hair on men? I find that soooooo wierd. I was with a guy who removed all the hair on his body, except for his head. It was very strange. I used to not like chest hair either, but now I have no issues with it. And I do like stubble on a man's face.
crazyoldcatlady
so, i never wandered in here because i thought it was all about landing strip vs. jungle party; and as i am happy with my tamed circa-1990's kristin-davis rug, i have not posted.

but, since it's *all* hair, i do want to say that my armpits have not been shaved in 3 weeks and i like it. kinda makes me feel sexy/rebellious, too.

i've done it before, grown 'em out, and i swear people would think that i told them i was killing babies. the last time i grew it out, i had my mom take pictures of the epic length (we have a sick sense of humor) and my dad quietly deleted them. and i'm like, what's so scary about a little pit hair? my bf at the time was also feeling emasculated and bitter over it, but it sure as hell didn't stop him from fucking me. eat it, patriarchy!
dayglowpink
I didn't shave my armpits for many years. I also loved having the hair and shocking people with it. I started shaving them about a year ago at the request of my man. We made a trade- I shave my pits, and he keeps the grass mowed. I kinda like them shaved now. I prefer it aesthetically, but I sometimes miss having the hair.

I just started laser treatments on my legs and bikini area. I would love to hear more from those of you who have had them. I was skeptical after reading some article in a magazine about it not being totally permanent, but then I did a little more research and decided to go for it. I figure I've spent so much on waxing over the years, it's an investment. But, I had my first treatment a week ago, and there hasn't been any noticeable change yet. I've heard that it can take several weeks to have any sort of effect, but the nurse who did it told me that the hair should fall out in 5-7 days. I'm not sure what the deal is. sassy and obelix- what were your experiences with it?

hello dayglowpink,
i'm new here and just stumbled upon your post. i just had the light hair removal done last week. that was my first session and i was pretty much told the same thing as you... 5-7days. i am currently having my underarms done and we'll see how well it works before i move on. i have not yet noticed a diff. either.
sassy
They didn't tell me the 5-7 day thing at my laser treatment place. They just said that I would really start seeing results after 4 treatments. I'm currently done with three on my legs and bikini. After my first two...I really noticed a difference, but mainly once the hair started growing back. I noticed that the hair grew slower and was much thinner. I had bald patches on my bikini area! After the third treatment, I noticed that there wasn't as drastic a change as with the first two times, which they told me to expect. Some of the hair does come back in the beginning and they will kill it eventually during the process. At my laser place, they will do 10 sessions on you and if any hair comes back after that, EVER, they will do it for free. I think that's a pretty good guarantee that, for the most part, laser is a permanent solution. smile.gif

CH, I had a bf once who shaved his balls, which was convenient I guess but kind of weird. I don't mind chest hair or other body hair on men, although I'm not crazy about back hair. I wouldn't dicate to anyone what they do with the hair on their body but I have to say, back hair on men grosses me out a little.
culturehandy
I do hope that the man I'm doing trims. word on back hair, I don't want to run my fingers through it. Not my thing.
lilacwine13
I guess I'll be one of those freaks who doesn't shave her armpits. I like being rebellious, but I've never been good at it (my pits always looked like they had a five'o'clock shadow), so it's one thing I'm willing to grow out. For some reason, the guys I'm with seemed to be okay with the hairy armpits and oddly enough, AZ Guy had more issues with the crotch hair than with the armpits. Even then, as long as everything was trimmed, he was okay with it. I'm sure I've alienated some people by having hairy armpits, but so far nobody's confronted me about it.

I shave my legs about once a week now, and do the same with the bikini line, but only because I sometimes go swimming and I like the look of smooth legs. If my hair was light, then I'd probably shave even less; in the wintertime I seldom shave anything because I'm always wearing long pants or long skirts, plus I'm really lazy. laugh.gif

Body hair on men is okay, as long as it isn't excessive. Some on the chest, fine, but definitely no back hair. I got used to a guy shaving his balls, though, when I was with AZ Guy, it made going down on him a lot easier.

regarding all this talk of back hair......

My dad is a pretty hairy guy. Once when I was a teenager, I noticed my dad's back hair and was talking to my mom about how gross it was, and that if I was ever with someone with back hair I would make him get it waxed - heck, I'd even do it myself.

My mom responded by saying "Darling, someday you're going to meet a man, and you're going to fall in love with him, and he's going to have back hair, and you're going to think it's sexy because you think he's sexy."

To which I responded "EWWW! NO WAY! NEVER!"

.....she was right. In fact, the older I get, the more I realize she was ALWAYS right. but that's a post for another thread smile.gif
beck
so true, geekchickknits! and plus, i get so hoity-toity about unfair expectations on women to look a certain way that i feel it would be hypocritical of me to do the same thing. although i do draw the line at nose and ear hair!
sassy
Well my husband, and the guy I dated for two years before him, shaved pretty much everything...including armpits, chest and genital area. I don't like body hair, but I didn't ask them to shave...it was their preference before I met them. I must say that it makes sex, etc. a lot better!
obelix2
Spot on, Geekchickknits, about mom wisdom and back hair. I used to shudder when I saw a man with a hairy back, and chest hair was nearly as grody. But I fell in love with a guy who has both in spades (but none on the top of his head!) and I love to run my fingers through it now. He also trims the franks and beans, which I do like.

Here's my laser experience: I have very pale skin and very dark body hair, so I'm one of those lucky people on whom lasering is supposed to work the best. I used numbing cream, and the place where I go uses cold gel. It's like being snapped with a rubber band at the worst, and sometimes barely noticeable when I got zapped. When she was zapping my chin, it felt like my jaw bone was being microwaved. It got so hot.

My zapper said that I'd probably have some "ejections" with the treatments, and I had no idea what she meant until after the treatment. I went in with hair about 1-2 mm long. I went home right after the treatment in case I had too much redness to go back to work without drawing questions. I'm glad I went home! The hairs that had been 1-2 mm were now ~5 mm, and could be seen by anybody close enough to talk to me. I was told that these would fall out in a few days, so I went ahead and used a depilator on my face.

I had 5 treatments on my face and 4 on my goodie trail. The hair hasn't disappeared, it's just turned to blonde. I still have to pluck a few black hairs a week from my face, but this is such an improvement. I used to shave my face daily, twice if I was going out at night.

I feel like a horrible feminist by doing this - caving in to an image of women that was forced upon me. But back in college when I stopped shaving my legs for a few months, I literally had people staring at me on the sidewalk. I'm sasquatch. I remember swimming at a lake with my undergrad friends. One of them was a physics phd student who was completely literal about everything. He asked me, without intending to be cruel (just inquisitive), about the hair on my thighs. He though it looked more like a male-pattern hair growth than female.

My boyfriend is like that. He doesn't care about my legs or pits but he bugs me to shave my crotch, and I don't want to. I've done it 2 or 3 times in the past, and it's tedious, I've got hairs on the edges of my labia that I don't want to put a razor ANYWHERE near, I get a 5 o'clock shadow almost immediately, and then for the next several days I'm dealing with itchiness, red bumps, and stubble. I prefer to keep it trimmed... it's still nice and neat, but I don't run the risk of mutilating myself.

I've explained all this to him and his excuse is that he shaves his balls sometimes, and those are delicate areas to shave. Well I don't give a damn if he shaves his balls! I never asked him to. And when i ask him WHY he wants me to shave so much, all he can say is that it's hot. Which is pathetic. If you want to watch porn then fine, but don't internalize it and then impose that on your significant other. Ass.
edie52
I guess I'm lucky. My boyfriend likes body hair on me. Last year I grew out my pit hair and now I love it, too. Now that it's summer and I have a new job (which involves dealing with the public and will probably involve sleeveless wear) I feel like I have to shave it. I'm so reluctant, I feel like it's a part of my sexual power now. They'll feel naked hairless, like my crotch did when I shaved it. But I'm not comfortable flaunting them yet (they feel more private and sexualized now that they're hairy), and I don't really want my boss to have to have a "shave yr pits" conversation with me. So I guess it'll be a seasonal thing.

HT, I feel the exact same way as you do about teh shaving down there.... for me the cons outweigh the pros. I trim, and shave or Nair the edges before swimming. That's it.

My legs were hairy all winter, but I just waxed them below the knees (some awful stuff from the pharmacy that gave me a rash). My leg hair is too dark and long to feel sexy in a skirt or shorts in the summer. If it was fine and light, I probably wouldn't shave them either.

It was great in the winter, not shaving anything, not even owning a razor.

i hate shaving and, yes, i've experienced the itching. but even worse than not being able to wax yourself is going to a salon and them not being able to grab at least half your hair with the wax because only a month of growing isn't enough for your superfine hair but they still want to charge you full price. i love that my boyfriend doesn't seem to care that i will usually have at least a month between shaves and lets me use his buzzer to trim my pubes because i do not need to deal with the irritation of shaving that area.

i need some advice from seasoned bikini-waxers:

i made an appointment for my first bikini wax to take place in a few weeks, it will also be two days before i see the boyfriend for the first time in a whiiiiile. will 2 days be enough recovery time or should i consider giving myself longer? i haven't decided how much i'm going take off, preferably all of it.

i've read a bunch of previous posts and asked around, but thought i'd check. i do, however, now plan to take tylenol or such about an hour before and have something to clench my teeth on. and i'll wear some loose clothing the rest of the day. eek.

hellotampon
I don't get how you can take it all off the bikini area. Is it just me or doesn't everyone have hair on the inner edges of the labia? I can't imagine ripping that out.
sassy
hellomargot: Unless you have really tough, non-sensitive skin down there, you will still be red after two days. My bikini area after a brazillian waxing looked like I had the measles. This will lighten up each time you get waxed because your hair will get more used to it. It's painful, I'm not going to lie...this is why I'm getting lasered now!

with body sugaring, the redness goes down after a few hours and one gets less ingrown hairs.

You get used to the the hair being removed.

I thought it was just me who had these problems! Everyone seems to talk as though they do it regularly and so i assumed that I was doing it wrong/used the wrong stuff/had an abnormal body. I prefer to trim it all down and just keep the edges neat. anything else is too much hassle to be a regular occurance

I always thought it's perfectly normal to have pubes on the inner edges, too.
I shave almost everything, and on the parts close to the labia, I just pull the skin a bit, to prevent injury.
The red bumps seem to get less, if you that's done regularly, but I don't know if that applies to everyone.
starship
I think youre right, I shave the bikini line quite regularly and dont seem to get much problem with itching or bumps anymore. Its just when it comes to more drastic removal i have problems. I dont like it too sparse anyway. Along with my small boobs it'd make me look positively pre-pubescent. I'd be a bit worried if my boyfriend found that too attractive:/

Ya I always worry about the hairs on the very inner edges too and when I shave them I just kinda "read Braille" and hope for the best hehe. But surprisingly I never get irritation there... it's always on the upper "bikini area" like on the sides where the front of my thighs are. I get red itchy bumps a day or two after shaving no matter WHAT I do and walking around and creating friction certainly seems to aggravate it more. I also seem to be prone to ingrown hairs on the insides of my thighs down below the under-carriage. mad.gif But I'm too scared to ever get waxed down there... I have very sensitive skin and I know my poor cutlets wouldn't make it.

/shudders at the thought. ohmy.gif

Shockingly, the husband has actually said on more than one occasion (unprompted nonetheless!) "I like a little bush... it's supposed to be there and it's sexy."

This of course always makes me feel good (and like phew! lol) but I do change up my "down-there 'do" every once in awhile, depending on my mood at the moment.

I wonder if I could permanently blow off shaving altogether and do one of those fauxhawks down there cool.gif

laugh.gif ahahahahahahahahaha, oh Pherber, that is glorious!

Hey Culture is sugaring easier on the skin than waxing? I have really fair skin, and very dark thick hair (the two times I've tried to get my legs waxed the estheticians have gone on and on about how they don't usually see hair that is so reluctant to come out). My family and friends (ironically women, non of my boyfriends have cared, quite the opposite actually!) always give me such a hard time about my hairy legs, but my skin is so sensitive I just cannot shave very often, and waxing just doesn't work, I get itchy red bumps, and the hair grows in after (literally) a fews days. Hmph huh.gif

Aha, I feel so naive, I've never even thought about shaving my bunny, I've always just groomed the sides to swim and left 'er alone. I can't believe that it's so common and yet it just never occured to me. Is it just a matter of appearances or comfort?
culturehandy
julia, to me sugaring is easier on the skin than waxing, I like getting my legs sugared in the summer (truly a glutton for punishment) because I don't do well in the heat and I find it also exfoliates my skin.

anyhows... sugaring is all natural and you don't nearly get the ingrowns you do with shaving, it doesn't dry your skin out or anything. have you tried bathing with sea salts to prevent ingrowns??

I'd say give it a try and see how you like it.

Pherber, hee.

sybarite
I usually apply a heavy duty healing cream after a wax and I never have problems (touch wood) with rashes or ingrowns afterwards, although the gloop I use gets on the inside of my jeans... I use something called sudacreme, a bikini waxer recommended it to me. Apparently it's also used to treat diaper rash blink.gif , but hey, it works.

Juliaolive, these days I shave if I'm going to a spa or something for a day or two, but I get waxed if I'll be at a beach for a week or more, so I don't have to worry about trimming every other day. For my weekly swims I usually don't bother doing anything.

CH, if I could find a decent place that did sugaring near me I'd definitely check it out.

Oh my god. I'm so glad I don't mind my pubic hair. I'm such a baby I've never even considered waxing and now I'm glad!

I remember when I was in my early teens and not even close to being sexually active yet, I obsessed over whether or not I should shave my pubes. So did everyone else. There was a message board that everyone in my school and all the neighboring towns went on religiously. The topics were mostly, "who are the hottest girls/guys at WA?" "who is the most popular at PHS?" "top 10 sluttiest girls at NFA" etc., but there were also lots of topics posted anonymously asking the big shaving question. We could never get a straight answer. It drove us mad.

It was a relief when I realized that it's not the end of the world if you do or don't shave and that trimming with scissors is painless and costs nothing.
