Well, I got back from seeing my internal medicine doctor (I've been sick for a very long time) and they found that I have a high testosterone level. So, she's going to refer me to an endocrinologist to check my ovaries and adrenals. I hope its not PCOS...

But even if I do have PCOS, it still doesn't explain all of these awful symptoms I've been having.

I use pads, but soon will start using tampons....cause of the "rag" smell.

Well, girls. I jinxed myself indeed. I was having my daily look-see today when I propped my leg up on the counter, positioned the mirror and got a faint whiff of something rotten. Its still strange though, because when I smell the discharge on my finger it has virtually no odor. It actually smells faintly of raw potatoes. But the smell emanating from my vagina smells rotten. Does anyone else here experience this???

FYI - Most BV sites I've read says that tampons are bad for BV-patients, because it keeps the bacteria and high-pH blood in your vagina longer (which is why I switched to pads), but The V Book says that tampons are okay. Just make sure you don't use the kind that's too absorbent - e.g., the super-size for a light flow, etc. - because that can cause vaginal ulcers.

In fact, Dr. Stewart says that women who use pads end up with more rectal germs in their vagina because the pad rubs back and forth. But she doesn't recommend against using pads, either.

Anyway, according to her, thumbs up on tampons.

I use tampons...but I switched to the non-scented kind.

My odor changes all the time. I noticed that I never have a constant smell. It ranges from Fish, trash, shit, a buttery smell (like pop-corn), cake, pizza, cheesy, creamy....and so on and so fourth. The worst are the first three.

Hello everyone!

I realize that ths is BV site, but since we were discussing hormones, breast lumps, and breast cancer and so forth...I wanted to mention something that I had posted earlier regarding aluminum zirconium ( in deodorant) (according to research...this was at one time linked to breast cancer.... However, after day seven of my insomnia, I usually collaspe from exhaustion, but a new broadcast woke me from sleep... claiming that researchers are now revoking this link to breast cancer....(I don't think I was dreaming..I think I heard this..who knows..) maybe the Secret deodorant company paid them off to say this..lol (I'm just teasing..) Are researchers researching our research? LOL.

so on friday i noticed a little discharge coming out so i put a liner on, and then next time i went to go to the bathroom it was thick (not gooey, almost like powdery??) whitish, yellowish, brownish discharge. and it smelled like onions/garlic. but i had garlic herb potato chips that day so that could have been why i smelled like that. but anyway i put a yeast arrest in at night and since then i've been fine. it's only sunday but we'll see. maybe i'll have to just use one yeast arrest every once in a while, which i am very fine with.

I think the different smells that linger around from time to time are from caused by foods we eat... I think of it this way...the colors yellow and black...make green...pineapple and spinach...make.....??

This is to much TMI, but my ex's love juice tasted different from time to time, depending on what he ate.

Maybe we need a blood hound to join the team to detect early warning signals of BV. lol

I keep a food journal, but I am also gonna start keeping better track of my menstrual cycle..the day I start..the hour ..minute if possible. lol Keep track of how long they last and so forth...the discharge that varies from day to day.

I spoke to my pharmacist this weekend, he says that he knows of doctors putting women on birthcontrol for the sole reason to regulate their hormones better.... But for members like Cancan, of course this is not an option as she is planning to add a member to her family.....

I am still BV free right now. I am in total shock. lol

I definitely think what you eat makes a difference! I've been drinking a lot of Naked Juice (green machine) lately, and I swear that's what I smell like! It's not a bad smell so I don't mind. But it's weird.

I am so frustrated with this. I am 14 weeks pregnant and I have had bv three times! The Dr. says it is common in pregnant women but I know that it can affect the baby. I've tried two different creams and it is reoccuring, does anyone have any suggestions?

However, aside from probiotics, you should definitely NOT use any of the other products on that list, esp. boric acid. (Maybe RePhresh is okay - I think the insert says it's okay to use during pregnancy. But it doesn't work that well.)

I have been making changes in my diet, and taking 1500 mg of vitamin C, and a stress B vitamin tab (3 in morning and 3 in evening...

I am hoping that I can overcome this with proper diet and exercise....

arj75, i highly recommend st. john's wort, valerian root or kava kava if you aren't already taking a prescription SSRI/SNRI. the only thing i noticed from them was sort of a build-up of grogginess after a couple of months or so of taking it every night, (not all of them at once, i varied them) but once i got cymbalta, i quit taking all of them. i took prozac as well and it had weird side effects. i am on a very low (40 mg.) dosage of cymbalta and you might want to try it. the only warning i will offer is that like effexor, it's supposed to be really hard to kick. but i've been taking it almost a year now and am extremely pleased with it. in other words--i went so long without finding anything at all that worked, i have no intention of stopping it unless it stops being effective for some reason.

Nope neverending, I haven't tried that yet. (have it in my stock pile though lol) I am a little scared about putting anything into my body right now. lol. Honestly, I have noticed improvement (a little) with what I have been doing. I'm trying to stick with mind over body and see how nuts I become first I guess. lol. I need something to relax me, without putting me under a voodoo spell. lol.

I had my colpo today. I had thought the bv was gone (for now) however, according to him, it is still there. Also, I have a yeast infection (according to him) however, I have no symtoms of this either. I told him that I have been dealing with bv for 2 years...and he suggested to me that my partner was cheating on me. I have no partner at this time. Not only did he insult me, but also made a comment of my "doctor" hopping list. I'd just love to find a doctor that has even the smallest bit of empathy for women that are dealing with this. Do they exist? I really wanted to rip his head off, but I felt like if I got started, I wouldn't be able to shut-up. I go back in two weeks for the results of my colpo.

I think St. John's Wort is amazing. It works really well on anxiety, not just depression. My doctor told me to try it, and it is working for me. It is in liquid form, but not the tiny sublingual bottle, it's a large 8oz bottle. I didn't want to take the pills, because they take too long to digest. I only take a tiny bit of it at a time, 1/4 of a teaspoon, and just keep it under my tongue for a minute or two, because it works best sublingually. When you feel stressed out or anxious, you take the liquid, and it works right away. The brand I am using is so great, I wish I could tell you what it is called, but I read the label, and it doesn't seem to have the company name on it. And I can't seem to find it on the internet. I got it from my doctor.

I am also still taking a tiny amount of L-Theanine (like 1/6 of a capsule) every morning. It seems to be working very well. I'm also taking L-Tyrosine (1/6 of a capsule). Because it is also good for improving your mood. And I feel normal - not at all zoned out or tired.

Hello to all first time here. My head is spinning after all the reading but at least I dont feel alone now I started having problems about 7 months ago when I started trying to douche with alum Bad Bad idea!! I STARTED WITH A BURNING SENSATION (UNDERSTANDABLE!!) then started having a discharge kind of light yellow with a little dark brown also messy thick gross I have not noticed much smell but the burning is bad. I waited to go to Dr. for about 5 months no insurance and afraid of going! anyway I did go and she ran all tests came back BV got the 7 day meds pills and it seemed like it was almost gone like the meds were working but just not long enough course of meds?? anyway I called Dr. shes been great { nurse practitioner} and she said i possibly got a yeast after taking the antibiotic for the BV I told her I have had maybe 3 yeast infections in my life and this doesnt seem like yeast she insisted so i got the one pill script for yeast maybe i did have a little yeast because it did take some of the inflamation away but still same discharge and burning I've read that some people need to take a longer dose of the antiobiotics and this does help them? I want to call and ask her for another script but I'm afraid she's going to try to talk me out of it. I have no idea if your doctor is being an ass, but trying to get women to consider that their partner is cheating is actually standard protocol. A lot of women are victims of their men fooling around on them, so gynos have to try and get to the bottom of that. Hopefully he was tactful about it.

As far as the doctor-hopping - if you've had a lot of different doctors, that does always raise a question mark. So I would EXPLAIN to him cogently that it's because they haven't helped you with your problem. Hopefully he's still not as ass after that.

What meds did he prescribe for your BV?

Lori, I explained to him that BV returns with, or without sex, also after my periods, sometimes even between. I understand that a lot of women do have men fooling around on them without their knowledge...but this man was a total dipshit, and lacked any bedside manner. I explained the doctor hopping thing to him, and he had no comment....

As for the meds....Flagyl 500 mg twice a day (7 days) and diflucan....

Maybe someone can help me understand this...BV is a bacterial imbalance..but yet it is causing infections in our urinary tracts and a possible cause for IBS It doesnt make any sense.

Nor does it make sense that I have a yeast infection...without any symtoms...the BV I can understand, but the stinch is not present at this time....

He says their is no link with hormone involvement to bv...however, I am pairing up with Dr. Stewart on this one. I also asked him a few other questions of which he could not even answer. So when I go back for the results of my colpo I will be bringing some information for him so he can maybe have a clue of how to care for the next unlucky girl that has to deal with this crap. I don't know how many of you have got the V-book yet..but I had read some comments about women refraining from oral sex, because they felt it was a trigger for their BV..maybe its the yeast that is the trigger....

Men need tested for yeast infections, research has proved that yeast infections are passed to us from recieving oral sex And they do need treatment. His mouth should be cultured for yeast, and if positive, he should be treated. Also, his semen needs checked too. (This is in page 199 of V-book)

Also, in Europe, the are using the flora we have discussed earlier....I'm taking a vacation. It's really frustrating that they have those treatment options there..but we are still sitting here waiting for more treatment options. The FDA needs some fire put under their ass

ok so after using the yeast arrest for a month the bv was gone for 5 days, came back so i put another one in, gone for 3 days, and yesterday it came back again, so i inserted one tonight. now i'm starting to get depressed again. i don't want to have to put this in every 3 days for the rest of my life. i guess it's on to the next thing. maybe i will try estriol however you spell it. i feel like crying.

Neverending has been posting since Page 1 of this thread that she has a hormone imbalance, atrophic vaginitis, and now she has PCOS. Her issue isn't really BV. What works for her isn't going to apply to most anyone here. Read this entire thread if you want more details.

Do not use a product that you buy from some PO Box that comes in an unlabeled jar with no instructions. And don't stick some hormone product in your vagina without confirming that you have a hormonal problem from a doctor.

I've already wrote in my blog (and The V Book also confirms) that boric acid is not a cure. It keeps the infection at bay while you're using it, at best. You've been diagnosed with BV at PP and you refused to take the meds. Using boric acid will only control the symptoms for a while, but it will not cure you. That's why the symptoms come back when you stop using it.

lori, i've refused to take the medicatios because i've used them numerous times and they don't work. why would i take something over and over again when i know it doesn't work? i'm very desperate to find something that works and that's why i try things that other people on here have tried successfully.

it would be stupid of me to take the same medications the doctor give me over and over again when it just comes back a lot worse after every time i take it. so yes, i refuse to take the medications. no i'm not going to go through a week of flagyl every month to waste money and time and probably do harm to my body, not to mention feel like crap. only to have it come back a week later a million times worse than before. no thank you.

And I read the entire thread, so who's been here longer is not relevant. And venting is fine, but you're having problems because you knowingly failed to take meds for a diagnosed, active infection. What do you expect anyone to say?

Flagyl has a pretty high efficacy rate. It's not that it doesn't work, it's that the infection recurs. There is a difference.


Because she's been insistent that she has a hormonal problem since Page 1 of this thread. It's called atrophic vaginitis, and she's the one who says that she's had that ... for well over a year. It's a different problem that's treated with different meds. It's fine that she posts here, but for some reason, no one (including her) seems to realize that it's a different condition.

Because the meds CURE the infection and then it RECURS. To say that it "doesn't work" is inaccurate and misleading.

Why? Because there is unfortunately no other CURE besides pharmaceuticals. (Sucks, but true.) So you need to take the drugs for a CURE, and then you need to figure out why it RECURS so you can STOP THE RECURRENCE. (This is called the vicious cycle, and quite a few recent medical sources have described it.)

And I think we've figured out WHY THE RECURRENCES HAPPEN (which I've been posting about non-stop for two months). Does that mean I know everything? No. But at least my information isn't based on crackpot theories.

You're not going to find relief if you have an active infection - by avoiding the meds. It's as simple as that.

For example, after reading this thread, you thought you should try to cure your infection with Yeast Arrest rather than taking meds. And it didn't work and now you're frustrated. This thread gave you bad information, and I think that's sad.

I appreciate the support and good info. in this thread (and there IS good info), but it's also a loooong record of women trying really stupid things and shoving all kinds of things in their vaginas and even injuring themselves. Trust me, I don't feel above anyone - I've had my own experience of sticking things in my vagina and messing things up (Gy-natren, sold everywhere). And it sucks that we have to resort to things like that, and there aren't better solutions out there for us. But at least I learned from that experience and am trying to help others not make the same mistake.

As far as whether I have any credibility in this thread is completely up to the reader's judgment. All I do is try to present FACTS and opinions BASED ON FACTS. Hi. I am sorry Lori, but the assertions you make in your post are inaccurate and damaging for those who seek alternatives. I suffered from recurring bv, yeast, uti's, and kidney infections for three years and thousands of dollars. I took my meds, tried boric acid, etc., and went to specialist after specialist. The medications were treatments, not cures. Ultimately, my bv cycle ended after I quit the pill, moved away, and changed partners. I actively had bv when these lifestyle changes happened and it subsided for some reason. The medical establishment had nothing to offer me except fore suffering, but I hope that it helps many sufering people out there. I want to share my story to offset the suggestion that there is no other way than the medical route and that this never ends. in other words, recovery can take on all kinds of shapes, whether spiritual, medical and/or physical and it can happen! Good luck everybody!

Lapis, if you read my blog and saw my post history, you will see that using pharmaceuticals is NOT the only thing I recommend, and I recognize that lifestyle changes is essential (although it's impossible to know exactly which changes will help who). And if you read this entire thread, you will see that no one has found an alternate cure for an ACTIVE infection that doesn't involve prescription meds.

What IS dangerous is to let an active infection linger because research increasingly shows that untreated BV infection poses more serious health concerns than previously known. Not to mention that you could think you have BV, but have another problem instead (an STD, or another type of vaginitis).

I've never said that alternative treatments and/or lifestyle changes should not be sought. And I also know that doctors can be unhelpful (trust me, read my post history). But do you have anything better than - dumping our partners and moving away?

And just to make my position clear: I do not poo on every suggestion in here. But ordering unlabeled hormone products off the internet? Bad idea. Sticking flagyl tablets up your vagina? Bad idea. People have every right to do anything they want - scrub your yoni with Ajax if you think that's a good idea. But jeebus, someone needs to have the common sense to speak up and say, "Don't try this at home, kids!" Because ... Holy fuckballs. I mean, really.

YIKES. I will say that I told everyone that boric acid is temporary. I still use it...but that's because I want to occasionally be able to have smell-free sex. It's not a cure, though. It's still a great product, and it certainly can be used after antibiotics to ward off new BV or yeast.

I also never liked the idea of trying hormones. Changing the hormones of your body without a doctor's help is really dangerous.

That being said, I understand not wanting to take antibiotics. I don't plan on taking them anymore. They might "cure" me for a week, but then BV comes back. And the side effects aren't worth it.

I don't think anyone on here has given intentional bad information. They just share what works for them.

Leaving coincided with the end of my three years of bv; it was the context of my life at that time, not an intentional solution. Taking a break from sex and then using condoms without spermacide (as opposed to the pill or without a barrier), taking natural cranberry pills daily to prevent urinary tract infections, and going off all antibiotics to rebalance the body are the specific changes that helped my body heal.

Yes, you did say that, Sassy. In fact, boric acid is probably the best non-pharmaceutical solution anyone has come up with as far as dealing with the smell.

With any product you use it is up to you and(or your doctor whatever applies to you and will not harm you with bad side effects with prolong use), to decide to use it longer to see if that is what is needed to help relieve you of your symptoms but if you believe that you have been consistent and used it as directed and did not skip any dosage and you feel that is not the right product for you then understand just that and research and get involved in finding a product that will work for you. There is so much information out here for us we just have to continue to tap into it and get together on this board and spread the information around to one another. Yeast arrest is not a cure as a matter of fact I have not ran into a product( or prescribed medicine) that says it cures bv and bv symptoms. So, with that being said the deal we have in front of us is to find a product that will provide relief until they do find a cure if that happens. Prescription medicine says it can cure. The problem is that the BV recurs. This is an important distinction that everyone is missing. To say that the meds just "don't work" is wrong - because that means that it has no activity against BV at all, not even for a day, and that is untrue.

The key is to figure out how to prevent that recurrence. Not to beat this horse to death, but I don't know why no one gets this.

I totally understand everyone's reservations about taking the antibiotics. I wrote in my very first post that both flagyl and clindamycin have made me ill. Not to mention that I recently learned that both drugs can cause other types of vaginitis in our bodies, and possibly other long-term side effects. (Believe me, I'm quite upset about these discoveries, but it's better to know than not. Not to mention that I'm just as upset as anyone that there are no better solutions available.)

But make an informed choice rather than just rely on false statements in here that say, "antibiotics don't work."

I think that every single poster in here have helped at least one other member through sharing their experiences. Except for you. Do you know why? BECAUSE YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE BV. How do I know this? Because YOU'VE BEEN SAYING THAT SINCE PAGE ONE OF THIS THREAD.

Anyway, I do sincerely hope that you do stop peddling Estroil in here. It's a sketchy product from a sketchy source. And ... oh yeah, you don't even have BV.

no no! it definitely helped and lessened the bv and symptoms. when it does come back it's actually different then it was before. it's thinner, it's like light brownish pinkish in color (instead of thick and yellowish-green) and it doesn't smell as bad, actually it's a completely different smell. it does smell though. and i did mess up with the dossage once. i went away for a long weekend and didn't realized i only had enough yeast arrest for 2 of the 4 days, so i kind of spread them out so they would last me until i got home and got a new jar. and while i did that, it did come back after like 2 days of not using it right. so maybe that's why it didn't work? that's the only time i messed up... i'm not sure if i should try it again for longer or if i should try something new. i didn't have any side effects except for a little itching once in a while. i'm going on vacation in 2 weeks to vegas and i don't want to have the green discharge while i'm there so after that i will decide what to do. i think i will only use the yeast arrest once every 2 or 3 days for now just to keep it away until i get back and decide what to do. thanks bvgirl for your help.

Hun if you listen to Lori you'll never figure out what's wrong with you and you will be here another year. I had BV/HORMONAL vag! Plan and simple. I had the shit, fish, tuna, trash, ammonia, and even the popcorn smell. I had the white milky discharge. Everything that you ladies are going through, I've been there. TRUST ME! Everytime I went to the doctor that's what I was diagnosed with BV. I've read that if you let Atrophic Vag. go for soooo long, it will mimick other symptoms (like bv). I am too young to have had Atrophic vag. and I think the doctors didn't consider it because of my age but time after time I told them I never had any problems until I stopped taking the birth control. That should have clicked in there minds but it didn't so I did what I had to do and it worked.

Well, if you ASK me if it cures it cures meaning that you should not have to deal with it again and or deal with it reoccurring.. Put it this way if it cures then that means that you should not have it to reocurr.. Again.. Yes, I understand that bv ocurrs and reocurrs but I do not totally BUY into a cure (an actual medicine or product) that CURES bv.. I think about it in a totally different way than you do.. That is how I feel and I do not care about what a product says it cures because if you ask me if I am to be cured by a product I should not have to deal with it reocurring.. That is how I feel no matter what anyone says or states what a product can cure regarding bv.. Maybe it is chemical and maybe its because some people can be cured by one of many many products that are out here but to me because I have been through so many prescribed medicines( and believe me the pharmaceutical companies cannot make money off of one product that "cures" someone from something they see profit and the many products they create or mastermind will only fatten their wallets so the more products that say that "cures" one of bv the more money they make off of us who are suffering chronically from re occurring bv and bv symptoms that should not be reocurring because of the "cure" product that they mastermind to cease all bv and its reoccurring epidodes.. So, why don't they "cure" the reocurring bv? Yes, I know it is related and or closely related to our ph balance but where is the "cure" for that? Thats my story and I am sticking to it... That is how I feel I have every right to feel this way becasue I am living with bv and bv symptoms even though they are not present currently these are my feelings exactly..If there is a "cure" for reocuring bv and bv symptoms let me know and then I may change the way I feel about it..
Yeast arrest has helped relieve my bv and bv symptoms but it is not a cure becasue it can come back again anytime this I know and many here know that any product whether over the counter or prescribed is not 100% guaranteed to help relieve you of bv and or cure and or stop any re ocurring bv ... I never said to anyone to not take what was prescribed to you by your doctor, I never said that prescribed medicines dont work what I am saying is do not be upset if it does not help or work.. I am making the correct steps to stay informed and keep a broad view about bv...One product or prescribed medicine that "cures" will not always benefit everyone..We all have different tolerances..

Now you're just making stuff up.

- Atrophic vaginitis can cause vaginal discharge and irritation, period. It doesn't develop only after a "long" time
- A woman of any age can suffer from Atrophic vaginitis, not just older menopausal women

Please read, learn, and inform yourself for YOUR sake, and stop spreading misinformation for everyone else's.
