Hey guys!!! It has been SOOOOOO long since I've been here so I apologize if this has already been mentioned.

I was wondering if vitamin D plays a role in vaginal infections??? I've been taming my bv ( keeping it controlled, still always there though) by using one TTO a week as well as one gram of premarin cream a week. Well, just recently I was found to be extremely vitamin D deficient and have been put on prescription strength supplements. I'm hoping that this will be the cure for my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as well as THE BV. Although I'm not keeping my hopes up too much.

Anyone here heard of a link between bv and vitamin D?

If not, getting checked for a deficiency might not be a bad idea.

Oh that is so weird, I have been reading about Vitamin D deficiency for the past month!! I am SO sure it is a factor - that I went away on a trip a couple weeks ago to Mexico to get sunshine.

Vitamin D deficiency is a factor for me, if you don't have enough of it, you can't absorb calcium properly. My nails have been breaking to a ridiculous degree over the past few months, I mean really breaking, like falling right off my skin. And a friend of mine told me that I'm probably not getting enough minerals. Ya right. I am taking my calcium supplements. So I thought there must be another factor. Reading about calcium scientists and doctors say that you need vitamin D to absorb it. And reading about vitamin D you realize that a lot of people are deficient during the winter months when there isn't much sunshine out, and anyone like me that spends a lot of time indoors wouldn't be getting much anyway. Even during the summertime, I don't get that much because I never tan. And I use sunblock religiously.

Your body produces vitamin D when exposed to sunshine (without sunblock on), by eating vitamin d rich foods, or by taking a vitamin d supplement. I started taking Vitamin D3 pills couple weeks ago. And I am also taking Cod Liver Oil capsules every day, now that I read that it is rich in both vitamins D and A. (You can also get vitamin d by using a vitamin D therapy lamp for 5 minutes everyday. But I am not about to run out and buy one, because summer is around the corner.) The problem with taking vitamin d as a vitamin suppliment is that some people with digestive issues may not digest it and absorb it anyway. Which may be my issue, we will see if my nails improve or not. For people that can't digest it, sunshine is the best way to get it.

So my nails were the first indicator that I was V-D deficient, I happened to pick up a book at my friend's place, and vitamin book, and flip it to the page that said vit-d, and it said right there in black and white that vitamin d helps fight infections! I had no idea. I have something written down about this, I will look for it now, and then post.

[size="2"]sad.gif Hi ladies I was diagnosed with bv and I had to take metronidozole (misspelled-maybe) for 10 days, 3x a day. I had the feeling like my uterus or ovaries or something was moving. I am now off the meds but still feel sick to the stomach, loss of appetite. Could it not be gone. I could go back to the doctor but my bill is high enough with no insurance. I have read about the boric acid and acidophilus. That boric acid sounds scary but if it help hey. If somebody anybody hear my cry help me

Great that you aren't using it anymore, because both Flagyl and Metrogel are metronidazole. Just different trademarks for the same chemical. It's probably fine that you used it one time, but wait to see what your doctor says, I'm sure he will say to stop using it.

My Dr called me this afternoon and did say to stop using the metrogel. He still wants me to come in on the 22nd. I am going to keep taking the B6 and FD. Hopefully that will be enough to keep me BV free smile.gif

O.k. I found the info on vitamin d that I wrote down from that book: The hormone form of Vitamin D is calcitriol.

[ 'Calcitriol stimulates the production of macrophages, immune cells that gobble up bacteria.'

(pg. 133)
Vitamins and Minerals
by Ellen Mayer ]

I don't know if (or how) the macrophages directly affect BV. Because I don't know if there are any in the vagina. I know that we have them in our uterus, I am guessing to help stop infections from getting high up in our reproductive organs, or even the fetus. So perhaps vitamin d controls infection in a general way in your body. And I think the macrophages are a factor with different types of STDs. But after reading about the vitamin, what seems more important is that it helps regulate our hormones. There is so much information about this on the internet, it is making me exhausted just trying to understand it. Here is a quote from Wikipedia, sorry all this info is so long!

[ Once vitamin D is produced in the skin or consumed in food, it is converted in the liver and kidney to form 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D, (1,25(OH)2D) the physiologically active form of vitamin D (when "D" is used without a subscript it refers to either D2 or D3). Following this conversion, the hormonally active form of vitamin D is released into the circulation, and by binding to a carrier protein in the plasma, vitamin D binding protein (VDBP), it is transported to various target organs.[3]

The hormonally active form of vitamin D mediates its biological effects by binding to the vitamin D receptor (VDR), which is principally located in the nuclei of target cells.[3] The binding of calcitriol to the VDR allows the VDR to act as a transcription factor that modulates the gene expression of transport proteins (such as TRPV6 and calbindin), which are involved in calcium absorption in the intestine.

The Vitamin D receptor belongs to the nuclear receptor superfamily of steroid/thyroid hormone receptors, and VDR are expressed by cells in most organs, including the brain, heart, skin, gonads, prostate, and breast. VDR activation in the intestine, bone, kidney, and parathyroid gland cells leads to the maintenance of calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood (with the assistance of parathyroid hormone and calcitonin) and to the maintenance of bone content.[12]

The VDR is known to be involved in cell proliferation, differentiation. Vitamin D also affects the immune system, and VDR are expressed in several white blood cells including monocytes and activated T and B cells.[9]

hi lori!!

i'm new to "bust lounge" so i hope i'm doing this right.

you have very good advice and you're very knowledgeable with bv. i've been suffering from bv since june 2007. i'm trying to not cry and type this at the same time but this is a very emotional subject for me. i'm a single mom with 2 kids and i'm not getting any childsupport from my ex. and to add on top of all this crap...damn bv. i've been tested for all std's .....twice to be on the safe side...negative on everything except bv. i was treated with vaginal creams and short courses of flagyl with no relief. then with flagyl 3 times a day for 10 days...they did a test when i was finished with the medication and the bv was gone but there was always a discharge there. the dr told me that i have to recheck in a month...and when i did...that crap was back again. right now i'm trying the boric acid thing. i came across this wonderful website and i saw your blog. i was wondering have you ever heard of candaclear by pharmax? it's lactobacillus suppositories that are "suppose" to put good bacterial back in the vagina. i'm suppose to do that after the boric acid. i'm going to buy femdophillus. hopefully i can find it at a herb or whole food store so i don't have to order it. i live near atlanta. i'm also wanting to know your input...should i just not do the boric acid thing? since i read your blog it made me think twice. flagyl does work...it's putting the good bacteria back and making it stay so challenging. i read that you've suffered for 7 years...are you still bv free now? hopefully!!

if you can please respond...i would love to hear from you.

Hi, sooo sad. Welcome to the group. Yes, you did it right! smile.gif

It's really up to you re: the boric acid. But I can tell you that based on ladies' experience in this group, it's definitely not a cure. At best, it just controls the symptoms. In my unprofessional, un-medical opinion, boric acid and tea tree oil (TTO) may kill off the smell, but:
- doesn't do anything to help you permanently put the good bacteria back into your vagina
- may even kill off the good bacteria you're trying to replenish
So for that reason, *I* wouldn't use it. And for that reason, I think it's a bad idea to keep using it regularly on a long-term basis. Why waste time with something that we know is not a cure?

It's up to you to decide if my reasoning makes sense, or not. Everyone should make a choice about their own bodies, and I have been very careful to never say people need to do anything just because I say it.

Having said that, I think Fem-dophilus is the safest (when taken orally) and the most legit product. My suggested course of action is:

- get a thorough STD checkup (you've already done this, yey!)
- ask for a Trichomoniasis test - I think it's important to make sure you don't have this (wet mounts and pap smears are only 60% effective, and I think Trichomoniasis tests are not standard, like for chlamydia and gonorreah)
- use the prescription (which will clear up the BV)
- use Fem-dophilus (which will replenish the good bacteria)

This worked for me. Yes, I've been bv-free for about a year now.

Here's the info. in my blog re: canda clear - not a lot of info, but there you go:

QUOTE

thanks soooo much for taking the time to reply...i really appreciate it and your response was sooo quick! AWESOME! i found a pharmacy that sold fem-d and i drove 45 min to get it!!! i pray it works....I also wanted to ask you a few more things....if you don't mind wink.gif

1. while you were taking the fem-d and flagyl...was there still a discharge? if so, when did it clear up?
2. are you doing anything for maintenance? anything after sex? anything after period?
3. do you think it is a good idea to take fem-d for about a week before i do flagyl?
4. i know you stated that you've had bv for 7 yrs. how did you cope with this damn bv from hell? so did you try all these things that these other women mentioned...boric acid, tto, peroxide, etc..... how did you come across the combination of fem-d and flagyl?

sorry to ask so many questions but you seem like you care more than my doctor about my health. sometimes i feel like they just want to take your money and give you medication and not care about what you have to say. i'm sooo poor right now but i will give up money for food to buy the things i need to get rid of this horrible thing once and for all. i'm sooo happy for you that you've been bv free. hopefully i can be like you too!!

btw...i've been tested for trich 3 times...all negative!!

Good Morning you all! I just had my pap smear/std check and I'm free and clear of bv/yeast and any other infection. Even my doctor almost passed out from disbelief. lol I took flagyl orally 500 mg twice a day and the ultimate flora at night and fem D in morning. I expected the bv to return after my period, but it hasn't so far. I quit eating yogurt because well, I hate it, and I don't really like to drink milk either. I thought my multi vitamin had enough calcium for my body's needs considering they were for nursing mothers..but it was only like freaking 10% of daily intake needs. So, I have been taking for two months a generic brand of calcium 600 mgs, vitamin D, and magnesium, and regular multi-vitamin. Back on the water drinking kick. This is only one month I know, but a very happy month indeed.

so i have been taking the fem d, the fem d and got warm... anyway i haven't really seen any difference i will need to ge another bottle before i can make a good decision. for sure nothing is worse. there is no smell at all but that damn discharge. that is the part all along i have not been able to get rid of the smell i seem to be able to get rid of pretty easy now. it really only flares up bad after having alot of sex and that pretty much never happens mostly because my boyfriend is an idiot and i dont want to have sex with him. that is another story thought. back to the discharge, i was at this other website and it said something about birth control pills causing a discharge, in fact here is a quote "does anyone know what to do to reduce the discharge that comes with birth control pills?" i haven't ever really read anything about discharge and birth control does this hold any weight, and has any one else had this problem, if it is true maybe that is what my discharge is because it doesn't really seem bv ish i dont think. oh yea and i have no sex drive i mean none and nothing will get me in the mood and my tits are sore all the time. i know this is the birth control pills what do ya'll think. so i need a stronger one or one with less hormones i don't know much about it.

Just found a cheaper/comparable option to the fem-d. It doesnt come refrigerated but it says refrigerate after opening. I'm going to try it as it looks like the cost of the jarrow fem-d is going up at my usual supplier (went from 13 something to 17 something in 2 mos!).

Its called FemFlora and it looks like it has the same stuff in it as the fem-d only cheaper cost. Worth a try I think. I don't want to give up, but it didnt seem like the fem-d was doing anything for me; however, i'd rather keep trying to replenish than not have anything at all.

Thought i'd share that tidbit of info.

PS: Do yall ever wish there was a repair shop for defective or malfunctioning 'ginas!! Or wish you could just trade it in for a newer model LMAOOOO!!!!!! DAMMIT.

Thanks--it sure looks like the exact same strains, and Urex Biotech & Hansen were the companies Gregor (the patent holder of those strains) worked for/with.

Just wish the product was shipped cold!

You're welcome sooo sad. I'm happy I can help.

1. Whenever I took flagyl, the BV always cleared up in a few days - the smell and discharge went away. But it always came back. With Fem-d, it just never came back. That was in 2/2007, so it's been over a year.

2. Nothing in particular re: maintenance.

3. I don't think it's a bad idea to take Fem-d before you take flagyl. Just make sure to take it during, as well. (2/day as the fem-d insert suggests.)

4. How did I cope with my damn BV from hell? Not very well at all, to be honest. Here's an old post from this thread that describes some of the hell that I went through:

QUOTE(lori @ May 11 2007, 01:31 PM) *
For 3 years, I went to 3 different gynos at least 12 times - telling them something ain't right down there, please help! I got tested for every STD known to mankind (negative), but no one ever treated me for BV. One day I walked into a Planned Parenthood out of desperation, and they took one look at me and told me "You've got a wicked case of BV!" They gave me metrogel, and I felt better for the first time in 3 FUCKING YEARS.

Planned Parenthood isn't all sunshine and kisses, though. It's a great organization, but they are underfunded and understaffed, and going there is depressing. And although the first doctor/RN I saw was really nice, the second RN was a fucking bitch from hell. I told her my infection is recurring and I was really worried. And she yelled at me and called me a hypochondriac! I went to my car and just cried and cried. Then a bunch of crazy high school kids with anti-abortion signs started banging on my car yelling, "Give your baby a chance!"

So I've definitely had my own moments of - WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!

And for the question - how I came across the flagyl + fem-d combo? Well, I didn't come up with it. But based on my research, it's the only solution that makes sense. Fem-d is the only product I've found so far that is targeted for the problem, and also the most legit and safe to use. And it worked for me.

It's not the first probiotic product I've tried, though. I bought something called Gy-natren from Whole Foods, and it was horrible. In fact, the primary reason I posted in this thread in the first place is to warn people away from it.

Here's another old post I wrote, re: gy-natren:

QUOTE(lori @ May 20 2007, 07:19 PM) *
I hate [Gy-natren], it was terrible. For me, it was my moment of "Bad Product Pussy Explosion."

...

I don't know what this stuff did inside of me, but it looked like the capsules didn't dissolve properly, and neither did what was inside. And this stuff would not come out - I guess because it was sticky? - and just floated inside me for *weeks*. It was irritating, and I felt cervix pain, not like when I have BV, but still discomfort - when wads of starchy clumps are in your vagina, you're going to feel it! I tried douching, and even got my period, and it still wouldn't come out!

So I went to my gyno and she did vaginal irrigation - which is a form of douching, except she had to spray a *lot* of solution, and get all up in there and clean me out with swabs. Talk about mortifying. She told me there was a lot of weird stuff in there, and she said I was lucky I didn't experience any tears or injuries. (And I only used 6 of the 14 pills!) She also said it looked like the stuff irritated my cervix and made it swell a bit - I went back 2 weeks later (needed my annual pap anyway), and she said everything looked better, everything looked clean, and no more of that swelling. Whew!

After googling Gy-natren, I found at least one other woman who said the stuff made her cervix swell, so it's not just me. As far as what caused the swelling - the capsules are made of chickpea and garbonzo bean powders. So it's edible, and probably not toxic. But again, if you have foreign bodies in your vagina that just won't come out, that will irritate you.

Anyway, the product was in fact cited for FDA violations - they need to get more safety approvals to sell stuff that you stick in your vagina, and all they got was the approval for the oral supplements. They also mis-labeled their product. This is very sketchy. Based on that alone, I would recommend staying away from this crap.

Anyway, I've been saying for a year in this thread that probiotics is the answer, and I'm glad that people are finally listening.

Best of luck to you, sooo sad. "Our bodies, our hells" indeed. But don't worry, you'll be okay.

i posted some things in the birth control thread but never got anything back. i was just wondering as this is my first go around with birth control. i am wanting to stop taking it due to some side effects that i do not like. i.e. not a glimpse of a sex drive in monthes and sore tits. huge which is good but sore. so how do you stop? just finish your month and then quit easy as that? i'm on my period now so i only have a couple pills left. and i did not get a new perscription. so what do i do? hopefully in a few weeks i will be saying hello sex drive and my bv can really flare up again. i'm damned if i do damned if i dont. more sex more bv and and no sex no bv. either way i'm getting fucked, no pun intended

i posted some things in the birth control thread but never got anything back. i was just wondering as this is my first go around with birth control. i am wanting to stop taking it due to some side effects that i do not like. i.e. not a glimpse of a sex drive in monthes and sore tits. huge which is good but sore. so how do you stop? just finish your month and then quit easy as that? i'm on my period now so i only have a couple pills left. and i did not get a new perscription. so what do i do? hopefully in a few weeks i will be saying hello sex drive and my bv can really flare up again. i'm damned if i do damned if i dont. more sex more bv and and no sex no bv. either way i'm getting fucked, no pun intended

When I stopped I just stopped in the middle of the pack. I was having my period ALL OF THE time and was sick of it...But now I am pregnant smile.gif

Did anyone have their first case of BV with an IUD or still have an IUD??? That was when mine started. I had the IUD taken out about a year and a half ago and then went on the pill. My body does not mix well with hormones AT ALL!! I am pregnant now and pretty sure this will be our last child. I LOVED having IUD but I am scared it will make the BV worse. My hubby will do a Vasectomy, but that is just so permanent.

Yes. And DON'T DO IT.

I've got to run, but I'll post more info. later. (You can search this thread yourself for others' experiences.)

JUST DON'T DO IT!!!!

Ooops. I got desperate and stuck one up there yesterday. The damn thing wasn't working orally. I had some results when I first took them orally, then I got my period and it all went to hell. My BV came back worse than what I started off with and it sorta freaked me out cause it was never this bad ever. Anyways, sticking one up there helped. I don't have an abundance of discharge, but there is a very very very slight smell (it's not a bad smell persay, it's just a smell that I don't recognize). However, there might be little to no discharge, but the BV is still up in there. I stuck my finger up there, took it out and the BV evidence was on my finger *sigh*

um, lets see.. I haven't had any irritation since putting the capsule up my cha cha. No itching (thank you lord)... besides the discharge, that was my major issue. *knock on wood*. Don't wanna get too happy cause it's only been a day and 2morrow, the discharge and itching could be back full force. I was gonna stick another capsule up there tonight with hopes of it wiping out the BV completley, but with ur CAPS of warning, I'm going to refrain.

The reason I decided to take the risk is cause I was reading old post and two people had tried it and said it worked so... What have been the results when people used it as a suppository?

Lori -

I read what you said about taking Flagyl and Fem-Doph - makes perfect sense and I think that is what I'll try next. I really HATE Flagyl though. It gives me such a bad stomachache and a terrible taste in my mouth. I haven't been to the doctor in a little under a year - but I've had so many prescriptions for Flagyl from different doctors...I'm going to call CVS today and see if by chance one of them has a refill left on it. I would go to the doctor, but it is very hard to fit in an appointment with my work schedule. If I don't have any refills left, is it safe to buy it anywhere online??

I am getting so tired of this. I am at work and I feel like everyone can smell this disgusting odor emanating from me. I don't even know how to describe it ... maybe kind of like the poop smell sprinkles talks about? LOL My period has just ended, and the discharge is very thin and watery with what looks like little bubbles. Does anyone else have this??

lisabon - I tried the Fem-Doph as a suppository once and I had a really weird smell. It was probably "normal" because of inserting it, but it was so weird that it was enough to stop me from trying it again. I have been taking Fem Doph orally too for a few weeks and haven't noticed any improvement either.

Thanks, Lori, for responding. I, luckily, don't get that smell, just an occasional itch, like every other day, when I check, glob of egg-white like stuff hanging out at the entrance of my va jay jay, making me itch. At the GYN's office, she checks under the microscope, says slight bacterial infection, but when cultured NOTHING. Weird. Clindesse only works temporarily so I think I'll ask for the Flagyl this time. Any of your guys having strange issues? When my man ejaculates, this yellow, jelly-like glob comes out first, then his semen. FINALLY, he went to the urologist who diagnosed prostatitis, did semen analysis. Everything is supposedly fine - even the jelly stuff, only he's producing no sperm whatsoever. Now we're on to the specialist. Doctors say my problem and his problem not connected, but sure seems weird that neither of us recall ever having this issue until we got together. Thanks for doing this Ladies. This is absolutely maddening and it's so nice to have some understanding. While I have the most wonderful man in the world, as long as we both can have an orgasm, he's not worried, ugh.

Hi Lisabon,
To answer your question, I am one of the people that took the Femdophilus vaginally, and it worked for me. But if you read my old post, you will see that I don't stick the whole capsule up there. They take a long time to dissolve, so I wouldn't want to risk having them get stuck. What I do is once a week, I open up one of the Femdophilus capsule, dump half of it into a few drops of Sylk lubricant, mix it up fast, and then put it back into an empty capsule (vegi-cap) and then quickly insert it high into my vaginal cavity with a finger. And I make sure there is a little bit of the Sylk on my finger while doing this, as the lubricant makes it easier to insert. And I do this right before bedtime. Because you don't want it to fall out. Everyone is different, but this seems to be working for me. I do it for maintenance once a week or so. And I now don't have discharge or a smell. However, I am ALSO taking one capsule of Femdophilus every night before bed with a glass of distilled water!! So perhaps this is helping too!

Hey all,

About the vaginal use of Fem-doph: I know I screamed NOOOO! yesterday. I apologize for that, that's not what I usually do. As always - use your own judgment. But make sure it's an informed decision.

There are ladies here who've used Fem-doph vaginally and had BAD experiences - with their discharge turning funky, and the capsules not dissolving completely. The undissolved capsules are a particular problem, because the pieces can cause irritation and possible tearing. (I can't find these posts, but if I do, I'll add them to my blog later.)

OTOH, other ladies have posted a lecture from Dr. Gregor Reid saying that people have used Fem-doph vaginally in clinical trials, and it's been very effective. But he also made a point of saying that there is no FDA approval for this type of use.

So here's my opinion: I wouldn't do it. People in clinical trials are guinea pigs, and also have round-the-clock care from doctors who can take care of you if things go wrong. And the Fem-dophilus, as it is sold now, is just not designed for vaginal use. As you can see from my recent message, I've had major problems with sticking things in my vagina. If you read this entire thread, it's a long list of people desperately sticking all sorts of things in their vagina hoping to fix this problem - and more times than not, it results in irritation and even injury.

Seriously, we should re-title this thread: "Bad Product Pussy Explosions!" The entire reason I bothered to write my blog is to catalog the many scary fuck-ups that people have went through in this thread, just so that they wouldn't be repeated. Yes, I ended up putting a lot more into my blog, but that was the original reason I started writing it.

Trust me, I'd love for there to be a good product designed for vaginal use that offers relief right away. I hope Dr. Reid's lecture means that he's working on a vaginal product based on Fem-doph. I'm also excited about the Swanson product, and hope that means more companies are making these products, so market forces will make them better, cheaper and sell it at my local CVS!

Until then, my suggestion is - use these products as directed. It's supposed to be taken orally, and it's designed to work that way. I know everyone here is desperate for relief, so you want to apply the product directly on the problem. I know people are skeptical that it will put enough good bacteria into your vagina just by swallowing it, so they want to just stick it right up there. Trust me, I know that feeling.

But be patient and just take it orally. Take 2/day at first, for at least 2 weeks. Just let Fem-doph do its thing the way it's designed to. The ultimate goal is to let your vagina heal and regain the right balance on its own; not just sticking stuff up there all the time for maintenance.

Anyway, that's MY opinion. It's always up to you.

Okay so I am not sure if this has been covered or if this is the right thread.

So I have found that if my guy cums inside of me there is a very distinct smell and its not so great. I do wash off after and all that jazz but not like a shower. After i shower it all goes back to normal. Has anyone found a quick wash to use in between showers? Or something?

F.D.A. approval is a wonderful thing to have, yes. But my boyfriend's penis does not FDA approval, and I let it go inside my vagina every night! Just trying to crack a joke.

well ladies wish me luck!! in reference to my post from earlier today - I called CVS about the Flagyl and as if by some miracle I still had a refill left!!! It has been almost a year since the last time I took it so I was very surprised. It was for 4 tablets as one dose. Well I just swallowed all 4 pills and it was AWFUL...the taste is seriously one of the most disgusting things I can imagine..it gives me chills just thinking about it! It is still lingering in my mouth but I'm crossing my fingers this will work for me. I'm going to begin taking the femdoph 2x a day tomorrow, probably for about 3 weeks. I haven't had sex in months, so I don't have to worry about a partner re-infecting me or anything right now. I HOPE THIS WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! smile.gif
lisabon
Thanks CanCan and Lori for the quick reply.

Well, looks like I spoke too soon. My discharge returned, but it's just slightly. It's at least 90% better than what I had to endure 3 days ago so I'm not complaining much. I dunno, this may be a stupid question, but how do you know if the capsule has been disolved fully or even if it's stuck up there? I mean, I currently have no irritation, I don't feel funny up there or anything. I know when I took the Yeast Arrest, the discharge from the capsule itself was severe and noticable. There hasn't been a lot of discharge since I put the FemD cap up there Monday. Does that mean it hasn't disolved yet?

Hello Ladies,

I return here after a lengthy absence with a heavy heart.

Last year I began a battle with chronic BV. Pelvic achiness, wretched smell, itching (mild), but the worst of all....the continual BURNING. Burning when I sit, walk, pee...and I literally lost my mind. The doctors I saw, gave up on me and suggested I start taking an antidepressant instead of worrying about my vagina.

I was on every pill and remedy listed throughout many posts on the thread. I don't know what happened. After three straight months of burning, I had a nervous breakdown one night, cried, threw things, and woke up the next day and it was gone. I have NO idea what made it go but it was just gone....until it came back in February this year. Same symptoms, same burning.

Took a worthless trip to the doctor to get flagyl. I knew that the infection was so far gone, I needed something because I felt some chills.

Well, this time the flagyl did nada, but take the chills away. In fact, the burning increased while on the medicine! And so did the yellowish to clear discharge. After being on 1000 mg a day of this, and feeling sick - you know that feeling flagyl gives you....I decided to try Pau d' arco tea, goldenseal, and oil of oregano. Still, no improvement.

I have two questions, if you all do not mind?

Does anyone else here have that horrible burning?

Does this candigen /genestra stuff work for anyone?

I am really short on cash, and I just can't plop down more money on something that's not going to work.

I'm seeing something new about Reuteri. I called every single HFS in town and no one seems to know what it is!

- sign me, desperate as hell, pissed off, and tired of not being able to be intimate with my husband

***thank you in advance***

Quick Question -- do any of you have a thyroid problem? Hyperthyroidism runs in my family and I've heard it's linked to many hormonal problems. I'm going to get mine checked soon and I'm wondering if it has something to do with my BV. Let me know if any of you have thyroid conditions.

Thanks!

Hi Carrie, (Love your screen name) smile.gif

I just had a thyroid panel done back in February, plus some blood work for Diabetes. I'm getting up there in age so they run these tests every year.
Everything came back as normal. But you are correct that thyroid issues affects hormones.

I also wanted to include in this post that, after researching the past hour, I came across another post where a woman said she believed her BV to be linked to seasonal allergies. And that when she took her allergy medication, the BV went away.

I'm not certain of the rules around here but I'd be happy to link that post, in case it's of any help to any one.

I was taking a probiotic called Reuteri a few years ago when I was having recurring yeast issues. I found it in the refrigerated section of Mrs. Green's Natural Market, near where I live. In fact, I saw the same exact kind just last week when I went into that store.

This is the one I took: http://www.potentherbs.com/shop/reuteri-naturesway.html

That's where I get mine--I buy two at a time--there is usually a discount if one does that. It's expensive, but there are no other lubricants of the correct pH out there! And the ingredients are natural & very mild. I LOVE it!!
Worth every penny.

Yes, I'm sure many BV cases are linked to imbalanced hormones. I am slightly hypothyroid. I was on Synthroid last year, then stopped taking it, and am getting re tested next week so that the doctor knows which strength of pill to prescribe to me. In case my levels changed.

This was my story for about a year. What FINALLY helped me was figuring out (in tandem with my late gyn) that the burning was caused by a yeast infection comprised of non-Albicans Candida. The species I was infected with are very resistant to most all yeast-infection medications, even Diflucan. What finally helped was stearing clear of Flagyl (which encourages yeast growth) and using boric acid vaginally, then re-populating the vagina with the correct strains of Lactobacilli. This was before Fem-Dophilus was available in the USA. It was called Ombe in Europe. I had to get friends who lived in Austria to buy it for me & mail it to me. But that one-two punch did the trick. My gyn had a compounding pharmacy make up 300-mg. capsules of boric acid to use once every night for two weeks, vaginally. (Most "recipes" say to use 600-mg. to fill a capsule, but my gyn agreed that the "European method" of just using 300-mg. should work fine.) A pantyliner is necessary when using boric acid, since it drips out over time.
I was afraid of putting something with the name ACID into my already burning-with-fire vagina, but it actually felt soothing as it dissolved/melted in there.

After things cleared up, I continued taking the Ombe (now called Fem-Dophilus), and used a boric acid capsule 2x per week and a 1/2 of a tea tree oil suppository on alternate days. As time went on, I phased out the boric acid completely, and used the 1/2 tea tree oil suppository 2x per week. Now, 18 months or more later, I still do maintenance by using Estrace estrogen cream vaginally every other day, and Sylk lubricant (pH=4.7) on alternate days.

I hear you about the too-burny-for-sex stuff too. We abstained at least 15 months from start to finish. Good thing I had an understanding husband!

Hope this helps! Hang in there!

Hey ladies!

Hmmm, so I haven’t checked in here in like a week. It’s been interesting reading what worked for some of you BV free gals, thanks for the tips. Anyway so last night I screwed up my life again. I kinda sorta ummmmmm, like you know……..made myself feel better. Ok so we’re all adults here. I masturbated. Well the point here is that now today I’m gettin ammonia whiffs. My body thinks I actually had sex!!! What the frick?!!!!! I didn’t even get to enjoy a live penis, what the hell!!!!!!!!!! I’m practicing celibacy, I have no time whatsoever for a boyfriend right now plus I want this shit gone completely before I get reacquainted with the penis. I’m getting all antsy now, I mean talk about wantin some man. I DREAM of a nice, throbbing penis. Seriously though a couple days ago I had floating penises throughout the dream!! It’s horrible I’m like all undressing guys with my eyes now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So they totally think I want it you know? Uugh. I so need some though, you know? I just don’t want the drama attached.

I guess it’s back to the old TTO again. When I woke up this morning I made an appointment with my new doctor because I want to switch up my BC again after getting some horror stories for the one I’m on. Also I need something better to take away my sex drive….celibacy ain’t easy. This time I’m asking for a metrogel prescription. I know, I know. I really shouldn’t but hey, I lasted as long as I could. It worked so well and long last time, the only reason why I feel my body didn’t get a chance to balance out the hormones is because I stopped taking BC AND also forgot to continue with the Acidophilus due to busy schedules. This time I want to give the Fem D another shot in addition to the Acidophilus, especially after all the success stories I just read. Only problem is the next available appointment is not for another month. WHAT! I want it NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really liked this new doctor the last time, I got in way sooner too. Oh and he gives me whatever prescriptions I want. He’s hella coooooooooooool!!!!!

So anyway keep up the suggestions, I went a little under budget last month so whoop! Whoop! I think I’ll go on a vitamin spree!!!

Oh yeah. I want to welcome all the newbies that I haven’t personally said Hi to yet: Sooo sad, Tabby, Damselindistress, Ladylyn. Hi girls!!! Welcome and never feel embarrassed to share, you just might be helping someone else. We all need as much info as we can get.
SpRiNkLeS
CarrieBradshaw: Yeah, my family has thyroid problems too. I agree with the ladies here, I’m pretty sure the thyroid hormones definitely affect our bodies’ other hormones and in turn the vitamins we take. I’ve been tested before for Hypothyroidism AND Hyperthyroidism (ok huh? I just confused myself) but my tests came back normaI. You know what I say to that? Bullcrap! I still feel I have a thyroid problem mainly because I have a very strong sweet tooth and damn milk chocolate! That crap gets to me every time! I actually am lucky enough to have an amazing metabolism (the main reason why someone would think they have a thyroid problem) so I don’t have that symptom BUT I seem to have all the other symptoms: Irregular periods (after I had my kid this changed to normal but now it’s back to irregular…also irregular periods are part of the regular imbalanced hormone problems but I was told it’s actually hypothyroidism?), lack of energy (everyone else calls it LAZY…like whatever! I do a lot everyday and no matter how much sleep I get I NEVER want to wake up in the morning, also I’m just damn TIRED all the time), depression, slow thinking process (my short term memory is a piece of crap! The thing retired on me or something). Also one of my old docs told me that an OVERactive thyroid could cause problems on the mind. Like impatience and irritability (that’s so me! He could tell I had that problem so he said it first), easily distracted (me again!), sensitivity to noise (totally me! I could write a page about this one. Everyone who knows me has fun with this), depression on and off (story of my life! Even though I can hide it well with my family), problems with sleep and of course with appetite. Heh, I seriously think I have both hypothyroidism AND Hyperthyroidism. I’m cleared of both so that just goes to show that sometimes tests aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. I mean for the first year I had BV I continually tested negative but finally at the end of last year the docs decided to throw me a bone (and some sanity!) and finally said my tests showed I do in fact have the BV bacteria.

Mg86: Hehe, so I’m the poop whiff girl around here, huh? Well it’s nice to know other girls with BV get that once in a while too! I haven’t had it since the TTO but I know it will come once the period starts.

Kristen: Haha, that first sentence was great. We should have a “Bored with BV” thread!

Morphia: Keep us updated with the possible Vitamin D link to BV! I realize I have different symptoms if I stop taking some vitamins, I actually stopped taking Vitamin D cuz I mean I had to cut the cost somewhere (along with other more costly vitamins, every penny counts) because I figured I get enough sun outdoors as it is cuz my little guy demands the outdoor life. Let me know what you find out!!!!!

My twinny twin: I will definitely check out FemFlora. Thanks for posting this! I am all for anything that will save me money!!!!

Hey TWIN! Girl you crack me UP!!! I totally feel you on this. I actually got a bit of a break from the red stuff (yuck) and got me a lil action from the hubby. LOL And wouldnt you know it, the NEXT day - tadaaaaaaah - Ammoniafish and the bleeding started again! I want to rip my hair out seriously. I finally got my femflora via UPS today and I took two of them. Wanted to take four but I'm taking so many other dang suppliments and vitamins and crap that I just get tired of swallowing pills. Oh by the way, I got evening primrose oil capsules (supposed to help with the insulin resistance thing and regulate the hormones or somethin to that effect). I really hope all this stuff works; its getting hot outside and i hate having to deal with bv during the summer. Seems like the smell gets worse when its hot.

I also want to agree with you on the mind problems, Sprinkles. Girl we have SO much in common its scary. I have the memory of a 95 year old and I'm very very impatient and easily irritated with everything. I too am easily distracted LOL The hubby jokingly says I have the attention span of a goldfish LOL Thats pretty bad.

Good luck every-bustie!
damselindistress
Hey, Busties. Thanks for the warm welcome. You all crack me up. I think this BV thing has made us all insane, so you just gotta laugh. All right, I'm gonna repeat myself here. Do any of the men in your lives have issues, prostatitis anything? Chronic prostatitis is the guy's version of our BV, no answers, no cure, just lots and lots of antibiotics. Come on, no one? I'm convinced we're passing this back and forth, even though the doctors say no. I don't want to believe that I have a defective coochie that cannot be saved.
CarrieBradshaw
I got my thyroid tested yesterday.....so we'll see what the results have to say. I just have this little glimmer of hope that my BV/yeast problem has been a side effect of my thyroid going bad and maybe that will fix EVERYTHING!!! I know it's a long shot, but oh well. I haven't had BV in 3 months....but I'm freaking TERRIFIED everyday that it will come back. I have been having a slight odor this week, but I just can't tell if it's BV because no discharge and no irritation. Usually my only symptom with BV is the nasty white gooey crap. I never usually smell. So, we'll see. sometimes I feel like I do have slightly different smells throughout my cycle. But they're never BAD, just ya know, girl smells.

ANYWAYS, Also! I saw an Ad for Clindesse in a doctor's mag at the doctor's office yesterday.....I seem to remember several of you trying this, but I can't remember? Did anyone like it? One dose sure sounds nice!! smile.gif

Have a great weekend everyone!!!!!!!!

Sprinkles -- your posts crack me up. Thanks smile.gif

hi girls!!

hope you all are doing great and experiencing some, if not complete, relief! I don't want to speak too soon but I am doing really well right now. I took the 4 flagyl at one time on Tuesday, and so far everything seems normal! NORMAL! can you believe it? I know I can't. I sometimes think I detect an odor, but its very slight so it may be my imagination.

I do have a question though: how long do I need to continue FemD? I have been taking 2 pills a day, but I'm almost out.

Carrie - I actually have used Clindesse several times and had good results. The only downside is the cream comes out for awhile, up to a week. But yeah the one dose is GREAT. Another downside is that it is expensive. With insurance one tube cost me about $40. Without insurance I think it is $70-80. My obgyn actually gave me some for free a couple of times which was awesome! It's worth a shot, and a lot better than horrible flagyl.

Thank you, have a good one.
CarrieBradshaw
oh and also!! when I was at the doctor yesterday I was asking maybe if yeast infections/bv could be indirect symptom of a thyroid condition. she basically patronized me and talked to me like I was an idiot. I was SOOOOO annoyed! okay, yes, it's totally a long shot, but I just want to figure out why the heck me? anyways, i was very mad when i left and will never see that doctor ever again!! btw, i have read before for some weird reason, hypothyroidism causes your body not to be able to fight off fungal infections (yeast)....oh well. sorry about that doctor rant, but i really cannot stand them!!!

Hi ladies. Im new here and just wanted to post what I have started about a month ago for BV and THANKFULLY, so far so good. NO MORE SMELL!!! First, I did a douche of Apple Cider Vinegar and water to regulate vaginal ph. Started taking FEMANOL, which came recommended to me and CANDIDSTAT[. Both twice a day. Also, did YEAST ARREST vaginol suppositories 2x a day during period week. They contain boric acid, oregon grape root and calendula officinalis, calendula flowers. I cant believe odor and other symptoms are gone and I feel like I got my vajajay back!!! I'll tell you, Im married and enjoy frequent sex with my hubby but this BV totally grossed me out and him as well. The smell after sex was disgusting and made us both not even want to do it.
