I like many of BV sufferers have HPV. I have no symptoms other than the bv. I believe some people dont know they have it because sometimes when I get tested it comes back neg but I know I have it. I know my bv and hpv are related, and that once I fix the hpv the bv will probably leave. I am trying a product called beta mannan said to cure hpv. Just a suggestion. I just started it so im just letting others know about it.

It may very well be related but most ladies on this board have what I believe is hormonal problems. Hope this helps. Good luck! Mine was hormonal!

Isn't this just another douche? It would still wash out good bacteria along with the bad, wouldn't it?

If they men) had any LITTLE problem with there stuff they would have a cure the next day but us NOT SO MUCH. Anyway, try the Nuvaring to see if it may be hormonal. While on the Nuvaring take a pro boti (sp?). lol GOOD LUCK!

Hey ladies, I'm cute, even sexy, nice shape, good personality, petite. I'm beautiful, but I want to tell this guy "Hey I'm not a dirty girl, by no means. I've not had unprotected sex in a year. I'm glad we're talking about this. this is another case of women suffering in silence from something out of our complete control. Men do need to be aware. I had a daydream that the guy I was with called me back. He hasn't called but once since the encounter (sympathy call) and he says to me " are you alright? Well, I'll wait until you get alright." What a dreamer I am! I don't think I can blame him tho. This is a new experience for me . . . it happening with a partner. The discharge is usually mild without the odour. And my odour is never an outerbody experience. It's only around my period or when I have and extremely vigorous encounter. My system goes haywire. The embarrassment comes and goes. I should have resisted the urge knowning I wasn't 100%. If he doesn't call me to even find out how I'm doing, I'll just forget about him display more self-awareness and control. Ladies, don't let it get the best of yous. There are men who understand these things and are willing to work. I haven't met him yet,but i'm full of hopeful optimism and pride.

Yes, You are! Once men are aware and I mean aware as in know everything, if they really like you inside and out they will hae no problem. One guy even came here and explained what he did for his wife or girlfriend. Just because you have a "problem" with your ph does not mean you are not intelligent, beautiful or even sexy.
Good luck!

This is getting interesting because we are now talking about how to live with BV and have confidence in doing so, which has been very difficult for me.

I am a single female and I live with BV for 10+ years now itís been hard to get into a relationship because I am afraid of the BV. Now I am slowly starting to see that shouldn't be a reason why I deprive my self of happiness. Is not just about sex for me ladies I want to go out with my friends and relax and not think about BV, I want to live one single day and not think about BV. I would like to meet a good and decent intelligent man and not think about BV while with him.

If I start working on my self-esteem and self confidence little by little maybe I can learn to live with BV until I am able to get rid of this beast. I think about all the years that I have fret away I can never get them back I just pray to God for support and I pray for you guys as well. Maybe it is time I came out of the closet and stop hiding.

Have you heard of Vaginal Atrophy? 10 yrs is a long time to live with BV. Really, if you take meds and your "problem" does not go away. Then it is not what/ was diagnosed if you get what I mean. You don't have BV. Try oatstraw tea, fem-del, and the Nuvaring. They Nuvaring does not work over night it will take up to one year but you will not even know it is there.
Good luck and books a million have great books to help you work on your self esteem. Positive thinking is great.

How can I be satisfied with the whole"she nasty her pussy stank like fish lololol" trash talk".That's how men act,it's not my fault that men act like that. They talked trash behind my back and in my face,I don't plan to explain anything to those jerks.
I went to school with this problem,so you think that I should of explain in front of everybody why my vagina smells,to my teachers and to the whole class and those stupid jerks that made my highschool living hell.
I have my dignity and my pride and I know how much I worth and I don't plan to explain my self to nobody.

In the black community, it's rough! Its harder trying to explain to someone something that some will not get. Try to educate those and it will get better. Let them know it is out of your control and you are trying to do something about it. Sometimes our people can be NEGATIVE but it will get better. Just educate!

Yes nothing new, but Jeanne is from the clincal trails and Dr. Paul Nyrijesy runs the vaginitis clinic where he is specialized in BV since 2003..I have never heard of a Doctor thats know this much about bv..so I think I will give him a try..Hey I have nothing to lose at this point....

I did a clinical trial and the B specialist in my city, at the time, told me I did not have clue cells and that I did not have BV but she could not diagnose me either. She sent me home. Try it. Know what you are getting into before you sign up and read ALL fine print. Look up everything and ask questions.

I use a regular birth control pill everyday, it was given to me by my doctor to make my periods light

Same here. I started because I use to vomit, have horrible pain, and all kind of discomforts. It worked for that but who knew it would cause years of confusion and 100's of doctors appts.

I feel your pain the same thing happened to me "several times" with different doctors. They'd pat me on the shoulder and say "theres no smell you are fine" They treat me like I am a moron with crazy cell brains that only detect my smelly vagina. I know I smell bad, I know because when I get up its awful or when I too open my legs its smells so bad.

I'd take with the doctor prescribe and seek another doctor, its your body not theres only you know for sure and it sounds like to me that you are being honest about your symptoms they just refuse to listen!!!!

I went to docs who made it seem like nothing was wrong. Yes, they will make you seem like you are crazy but still give you a prescription so they get the commission, parties, etc off of the many meds you buy and take.

Just because you have a "problem" with your ph does not mean you are not intelligent, beautiful or even sexy.

I really like that you said that. A lot of women develop a low self esteem and avoid social settings and avoid social activities, it's really sad; I've been there and I would know. It's very difficult to feel confident when you have an odor that makes you feel "dirty" and "unclean" (which others may smell if they sit close to you or near you) even though you probably have excellent hygiene. Something I learned for sure is poor vaginal hygiene is hardly ever the cause of a vaginal odor. It's usually caused by infection, your menstrual cycle, sex, vitamins, and other factors that usually don't involve hygiene, and of course you mentioned the pH being unbalanced.

I remember one time I tried to cover up my vaginal odor with baking soda (which by the way burned like crazy), deodorant, and perfume. The odor just became unbearable because it was mixing with the scents tongue.gif I think about that moment and I laugh because I was so desperate to cover up the odor that I ended up making the situation much, much worse.

Thank goodness there are more shows being done about vaginal health. I know Tyra did two of them, Oprah did one or two, and then there's the show The Doctors that also has a lot of segments on gynecology. Yay! People are being educated about vaginal health more and more these days. And oh my God, I can't believe how many women will go to a gynecologist complaining about a vaginal odor and the gynecologist will simply dismiss the problem and say it's all in their heads. Dr. Stewart actually says in her book to go in when the odor is at it's worst and consider not washing the day of your appointment just so the odor is more detectable and present.

Hi everyone, I too am a BV sufferer. I have utilized this thread for so much information : ) Thank you everyone, for sharing. I am writing with an update. I have been BV free for over a year now! I posted way back on 2/25/2009, reporting the following:

QUOTE(antonia @ Feb 25 2009, 03:52 AM) *

I finally found a regimen that is working for me to prevent BV.

Supplies - 800mcg Folic Acid (grocery store), Sliquid Feminine Wash unscented (drugstore.com), ph test strips 1-14 (got these at a local children's science museum gift shop), Astrogide gel (Walgreens), 10ml medicine syringe (local pharmacy) this is a oral medicine syringe and does not have a needle
  • Daily: 800mcg supplement of Folic Acid
  • Daily: the last thing I do in the shower, I wash my vulva with Sliquid Feminine Wash, unscented (ph of 4) and rinse with water
  • After period and as needed: I check my ph by putting a litmus paper inside my vagina. If it reads anything higher than 4, then I do a ph treatment
  • After sex: stand up afterward to dump out semen (ph 7-8). (Condoms are probably the best bet, but my bf and I are monogamous and I use an IUD, pulling out would be a second but he and I are really good at and enjoy coming at the same time) followed by ph treatment
  • ph treatment - fill a baby oral medicine syringe with 2ml of Astroglide gel (ph of 4), insert and dispense into vagina. I always do this after sex and any time vaginal ph is higher than 4.
By the way, I get recurring BV that usually clears up before my period and then comes back after. My main symptom is odor, but also some increased wetness is usually the first sign of raised ph, sometimes I get some swelling. Since I started folic acid and fem wash three months ago, I have had very little odor. Since adding the ph treatment I have had no odor and minor increased wetness.

It has been over a year and I have been able to eliminate almost everything on the list. All I do now is right after my period, if I notice any increased wetness I do a "ph treatment". Which for me is the Astroglide Gel, administered through the oral syringe. You can put it in there on a sex toy or finger, but it is not as effective in getting the full "dose" to stay in ... but way more fun ; )

For about 2 months I did everything on that list, then I eliminated the ph strips (I was able to tell if I had a ph imbalance by the increased wetness). Then after about 3 more months I stopped the post sex ph treatments. Then after a few more months I stopped the folic acid (well there's 400mcg folic in my multivit that I try to remember daily). A few months after that I stopped the fem wash opting for water only with the occassional femwash if I want it.
  • So, all I have to do now is be aware after my period for increased wetness, if I get that symptom I do a ph treatment (Astroglide Gel). Lately, this ph treatment has only been necessary every other month or so.

I don't even remember the last time I had BV odor. I am so happy ... hope this helps someone else since it is so cheap and easy to get my "ph treatment".

I've wanted to try a more natural or organic lube, but this has worked so well I don't want to try anything else. If you wanted to try another lube, test it's ph (the Astroglide gel is ph4) and consistency. Since the one I use is a gel, it is thicker which may be a contributing factor.

Hi! I have been researching BV for quite some time...I have had this for about the past 2 yrs now..got this same time I changed partners. Ive been to numerous doctors...prescribed me on meds for bv then yeast then bv again then yeast then a new doc tested me for ureaplasma...meds for that 4 times also ..gave meds to boyfriend for ureaplasma and bv and still nothing has worked!!!!!!!!! Im sooo sick of this. Makes me depressed. I have been tested for every std that there is.. and all are negative! I found this site and have come across a couple new things that I am going to try all natural...

I wanted to list some of my symptoms that i deal with on a daily basis...
-----breast tenderness..feels like right before u get ur period..and to mention i have a partial hysterectomy so should not be happening!

----frequent urination--doesnt burn..just have to pee constantly and lots of it. have now been put on detrol la to control this

----lower admonial pain--right where there should be an ovary but isnt...

-----lately lower back pain---its increasing! bought new matress ..still doesnt help

----smell of my vagina---it stinks and i NEVER use to have this problem...makes me feel embarrassed!

-----not so much of a discharge

-----itchyness in the vagina---i can always tell bv from yeast..they are very different itching!

----CONSTANT BODY ACHES...TAKE IBUPROFEN DAILY!!!

I need some input...ive read maybe this can be leucorrhoea that really has been causing all of this..makes sense!!! or just maybe is my hormones all out of wack...

I NEED SOME INPUT...MY DAY IS HELL.

any info someone can give me would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi everyone. Where is everyone? This board use to be so popular now its just flat out dead, can someone please bring her back to life???

Anyway, I still have BV and its depressing I am looking for new meds or remedies to try instead of the usual Flagyl or boric acids, probiotics, tea-tree oil, and vitamins. I have tried it all and nothing seems to work.

Any new findings about BV and potential cures. Please share if you can. Thanks to everyone and may God bless you all.

ps. Hang in there Lisa hopefully we can get rid of this monster soon.

You mentioned it started when you changed partners, have you had a regular check up to make sure it's not something else? Or is your doctor the one who diagnosed you with BV? Have you tried any antibiotics to try to kill whatever bacteria is causing it? Have your tried changing bath soaps and shampoos to make sure you aren't irritating or complicating the matter?

Hi. I tried boric acid early last year and it was a total mess, it didn't work for me. But please dont let that discourage you, it just might work for you. I dont understand why nothing ever works for me I must have the MOST severe case of BV in the world and I truly mean it. My gyno gave me a script for Boric Acid but I have read you can buy it over the counter or online, I never done it before and I dont know how true it is but if you wish to save a few dollars going to the doctor do some research on Boric Acid online. Keep healthy.

Take my word as someone who has been battling this miserable curse for the past 2 and half years! I would go to the gyn and cry to them, and they would just tell me the same thing..to pick up a prescription of mterogelor clandisse, flagyl etc etc etc blah blah blah. None of that stuff is permanent bc it is killing the bad and GOOD bacteria. NO GOOD! Your problem is back in a matter of weeks if not days. I, like everyone other female that suffers this hell researched all the time googling cures and treatments going on blogs to see if there were any natural remedies...I tired a bunch. It wasn't until last year that I tried a different type of probiotic called kyo-dophilus that I stopped getting those infections. The first time I tried it I would take 2 capsules a day (sometimes 3 becasue I really wanted to see if it would work) And I would open one up and empty the powder vaginally as well. After a day, I already starting noticing the difference. It was still itchy and there was still a slight smell, but I continued and after a week It was completely gone!!! THANK GOD! I would continue taking it for another week, and after while I would become cocky and not take them anymore. About 8 months later I started getting symptoms again and immediatley started taking the probiotics again and they would disseaper withing a few days. The MAIN trick I believe is inserting it vaginally for quicker healing. I noticed if I just took it orally, The symptoms wouldnt go away as quickly. I would only insert max 3 capsule (the powder of course, i never inserted the whole capsule) whenever I had symptoms.

I am SO SO SO glad I can come on here and share my success cure with everyone, bc for years I was coming on here and everytime, I said to myself I couldnt wait for the day till I can come on here and share something that actually works!!

kyo-dophilus!!! Wooo biggrin.gif

So I cant believe Im actually posting to one of these forums. I have been reading them for the last 3 years and Im finally going to do it. It so encouraging to know that other women stuggle with this as much as I do. I work in the healthcare/clinical industry and let me tell you...that still doesnt help me. I am about to embark on the boric acid suppository treatment once at bedtime for 2 weeks.

BV and YI have been part of my life for way too long. Im tired, emotional, fed up, and thankful to have a boyfriend that understands that us not having sex when these break outs happen, is not because im not in the mood....its because these infections are assholes!

The last straw....I have been at the ob/gyn 6 times in the last two months dealing with infections and negative tests of pretty much everything under the sun and more. Last visit we talked about vulvodynia, pretty crappy burning sensation. They gave me some lidocaine jelly to stop the pain and to help with intercourse. Well, its a week before my period and my symptoms are a firey hell. Of course, I get an infection with the onset of each menstrual cycle every month. So Im trying the boric acid, have a follow up with my doc in 4 weeks. Nervous abou the boric acid, is it safe to use while menstrating? I take probiotics everyday, eat yogurt everyday, clean well, no soaps, blah blah blah.

So here we go...wish me luck

I hope you are still hanging in there better yet I hope you are well by now. I use boric acid but didn't work for me hope all goes well for you. I cant remember if my doc said to use it during my cycle or not but I do recall the Doctor telling me to use the antibiotic cream for seven days straight even on my cycle. I guess they are both the same and should be used straight through but I'd double check with the Doc. Keep us posted. Good health to you and Welcome!!!!

Hi BUST ladies...just checking in to see if anyone has found a miracle cure. lol Oh well, a girl can dream, can't she?

I'm still struggling with the BV, and so far nothing I've tried has worked permanently. I read with interest the folic acid/Fem-D (I think?) combo post, and may try that next payday.

I went overseas to work in August, 2008, and even not having sex until my vacation in May, 2009, didn't stop the BV from making my life hell. I changed my diet, lost almost 40 pounds, etc and so forth, and STILL cheesed and oozed and smelled bad the whole damn time. Now that I'm back in the US and living with my fiance', and of course having frequent sexual activity, it's driving me nuts.

I am lucky in that my fiance' was willing to educate himself about BV and is very understanding and not the least bit judgmental, but it still bothers me greatly that I can't rid myself of this burden.

Anyway, I finally remembered that I had signed up here and came back to see what was going on. Thank you ladies for sharing your experiences with the world. I, for one, appreciate all of you.

I have been having BV and yeast problems since I was pregnant with my first son 2004. I'm so sick and tired of running to the Dr. every other month with this. I been reading about the boric acid and sounds pretty interesting. I have already purchase it at a nearby drug store. Humco Boric Acid Power is the one I have. Now from what I have read so far sound like you ladies or purchasing a capsule to put the boric acid in to make a suppository for the vagina. Pls correct me if I'm wrong.

Where do you get the capsule from?
How many do you apply and how often?

I was told you could take the boric acid an create a home your home douche (boric aid) and water

I was told by the Dr. a month ago that I had BV she gave me antibiotics to take. I started feeling better, but all of a sudden things seem to be getting worse. Now my cycle has been spotting for about 3weeks off and on. It smells so bad....Somebody pls help

Hey ladies, I've read through a large chunk of this thread and I'm so sorry to hear that you're all suffering. BV is a horrible, horrible thing. Anyways, I found what works for me and hopefully it works for you as well. I do a hydrogen peroxide douche before bed, and then I insert a probiotic capsule inside. Every night after that, I continue to insert a probiotic capsule. For me, all symptoms instantly disappeared. I'm going to continue with the insertation of the probiotics for another month (that will make it 2 in total), and then I think I will be cured (hopefully). There is no quick fix for bv, as I'm sure you're all well aware. You have to build enough good bacteria (which the probiotics do) in order to eliminate the bad.

Hi--You can purchase empty gelatin (or vegetarian) capsules at healthfood stores. Carefully fill a capsule with the boric acid. Don't put your fingers in your mouth until you have washed off any boric acid residue. It is poisonous if ingested orally. I usually use a bit of vaginal lubricant on the filled capsule, then insert it vaginally. Don't use it if you have any cuts or open sores on/in your vaginal area. Even though it is an acid, it will feel soothing as it melts inside. I did the 14-nights-in-a-row method (inserting one capsule per night). Wear a panty liner after inserting, since when it all melts, it'll work its way out as a discharge. My gynecologist had a compounding pharmacy make the capsules up for me using boric acid plus powdered acidophilus. We used 300 mg. of boric acid instead of the 600 mg. advocated in the US. (Europeans use just 300 mg.) It worked like a charm. You might want to supplement with FemDophilus probiotic, orally or vaginally, in order to not kill off too much good bacteria along with the BV bacteria.
I did this treatment & have been BV free for 4 years now. (I use a smidgen of Estrace estrogen cream 3 times per week & take a FemDophilus nearly every day to maintain...).
All the best,

OOOKKK so this didn't work. The day after I wrote it, I got a yeast infection and then it all started again. I was so upset, so I went to a health store asap and got iron supplements, probiotics, braggs apple cider vinegar and vitamin c.

- probiotic:
http://www.yourethecure.com/cart.php?targe...p;product_id=60

- iron supplement easyIron by platinum:
iron 18 mg
folic acid 800 mcg
b12 1000 mcg
vitamin c 50 mg
b6 25 mg

- vitamin c
1000 mg

- braggs apple cider vinegar w/ "the mother"

I do a shot of apple cider vinegar every morning, take 2 probiotics, 3 vitamin cs, take an iron pill at morning and night. I got so discouraged at first because the symptoms were still there, but I continued with my plan. The man at the health store said it would take at least a week before I saw any results. Well it's been 15 days and my discharge is completely normal, and the "smell" is extremely minor. It gets lighter and lighter every day and I'm sure that with the continuation of my system, it will go away. So please ladies, if you plan on starting with vitamins/probiotics/ etc ... please be patient!!!!! because it takes time!! don't get discouraged!!!!!! I'm so happy I listened and stuck to it!!!!!!!!!! I will keep everyone posted with my progess.

Hi everyone, hope everything is looking up for you guys. Anyway I went to my Gyno for my pap and this gross infection. This time she gave me the metrogel and four refills. I am on day 3 and no let up just yet. Has anyone been on antibiotics this long before? Is this the norm for stubborn BV? Will this possibly end the on-going BV battle. I know, I know, WHY NOT ASK YOUR DOCTOR?!!? I did and she basically told me what I wanted to hear, but I want to hear it from personal experiences so do tell. Bye all

Oh my gosh I am soooo grateful I found this forum. I cannot even tell you how embarrassing this situation has been for me. And I don't talk about it with nearly anyone except my best friend who can't really sympathize. I have had chronic BV/YI/Vaginitis/Cervicitis/Whatever the doctor wants to call it for 4 years now. I've been to several professionals and the last time I went (2 months ago), the Doctor (who is EXCELLENT) said he didn't see anything wrong!!! Then why do I have this horrible heavy discharge/itchiness if it's nothing? I refuse to believe that something is not going on.

It all started once I started having sex with my boyfriend without protection. I have been tested for every STD and had so many paps in the past four years it's not even funny- and everything is negative.

I saw this forum yesterday and I immediately went and bought acidophilus & folic acid. I took 4 billion acidophilus today and 800mg folic acid. I'm going to continue taking these vitamins and hope that I see some progress. Luckily my current boyfriend of 2 and 1/2 years is somewhat understanding of the condition. He just wants me to find help for my own sanity!

Thanks for all of your courage in telling your stories. I feel so much less alone.

Welcome to the forum and you are not alone because millions of women are suffering just like us unfortunately. I was on metrogel for one week didn't do a thing. I called my Gyno and now they want me to take a pill two times a day for the next seven days. I have to go to the pharmacy to see what it is because she left the message on my phone. I hope its not metro pills because I tried it before and it gives me awful side effects and it doesn't work either. I hope this works, stay strong and best of luck to you. Keep us posted.

I'm just going to say this again

VITAMIN D AND RELAGARD

Make sure your magnesium intake is good as well. Vitamin D and magnesium need each other.

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY IS SCIENTIFICALLY LINKED TO BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS/VAGINITIS.

I had a d deficiency and since I started getting treatment for it my BV has gotten 50 times better. I expect that when my level is good it will be totally gone.

It just blows my mind that after a couple of years I come back here and see that the same methods are still being used. Boric acid, metrogel, clindamycin, etc... The hell in your vaginas is directly related to what is going on inside of your bodies.

Get your vitamin d level tested. Most ppl in the US are vitamin d deficient because of the skin cancer scare bullshit that's been pulled for so many years now. 15 minutes a day in the sun WITHOUT SUNBLOCK WILL NOT KILL YOU and you may find that your vagina will thank you for it.

CanCan
Hi, I haven't looked at this website in a few years now, and decided to drop in just to see if there was any news on the BV front yet. Hi Morphia, funny, you dropped in to check it out too?

I don't have BV anymore. I think my last post here was about Vitamin D too. My nails started looking really really bad, falling off bad, and someone told me to take mineral supplements. But it wasn't about that really, it's about absorbing your nutrients. Vitamin D, or sunshine, will help you absorb your calcium. So yes, my nails healed in a few months. And I was so happy about that that I didn't even realize that my BV was gone. When I did finally notice that it was gone, I couldn't believe it. I didn't know what made it go away. Because I was doing a few different things. Just incase this helps someone, not sure which thing got rid of the BV, or if it was a combination of factors, but this is what I started doing:

I think I posted last in April 2008 about starting to take Vitamin-D. 800 iu per day. Sometimes 1200.

Did suntanning for 2 weeks straight. Half hour exposure twice a day or so. Probably much more than that. I was down in Mexico.

Continued taking my Vitamin B - complex three times a day with meals.

Started taking Folic Acid. One 800 mcg pill 3 times a day with meals. I spoke to a naturopath and he told me it is fine to dose high with folic acid. It's water soluble, your body will get rid of what it doesn't need. So I decided to try it, especially important for women to take that are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. And I was trying.

I also continued taking my Femdophilus. In my opinion the best probiotic for women. I took it least twice a day, on an empty stomach, and chased it down with a glass of distilled water. Distilled water because you don't want possible chloride or fluoride in tap water to kill the bacteria.

I also got all my hormones tested. Because you need to do that if you are planning a pregnancy. I was told by my ob/gyn that my thyroid levels were right on the border of being normal. So to keep me in the healthy range for pregnancy, she put me on the smallest dose.

I applied progesterone cream topically. Did that for a few months, but then stopped when I got past the third trimester, because at that point you don't need it anymore, pregnancy produces it.

Anytime I had sex with ejaculate, I would walk to the bathroom and bare down to squish as much out as possible. (Of course when I was ovulating and trying to get pregnant - this step I didn't do!) And then insert my little syringe with a pre-made mixture in a squeeze bottle that I kept handy in the bathroom. And insert vaginally one tiny tube-full of the stuff, then go back to bed because you don't want it to drip out. And I needed it to stay there so that the vaginal acidity would remain high enough. Once pregnant I stopped doing this.

I was just reading a article on the results of Lcr35 in restoring the normal vaginal flora after antibiotic treatment of bacterial vaginosis. This probiotic was applied topically inserted vaginally after the antibiotic therapy was completed. Lrc35 is short for lactobacillius rhamnosus casei 35. Some of you are on the right track opening capsules and administering them topically. The most effective method in my opinion after reading clinical trials, study results, and reading stories from people that have experienced recurrent bacterial vaginosis is to take a probiotic in conjunction with an antibiotic. I think if you just continue taking antibiotics over and over again, you could build up a resistance, and your not replenishing that lost bacteria. But if you take it with a probiotic the first time around there's a higher success rate. It's a wonder why most gynecologists don't mention this, I'm pretty sure they know of these studies. The success rate of taking a probiotic along with an antibiotic for bacterial vaginosis is higher than just taking the antibiotic alone.

Here are links to the study:
1. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111...008.01882.x/pdf
2. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18823487

Can someone please educate me on how folic acid treats bacterial vaginosis? And high doses of folic acid is dangerous because it increases your chances of a couple of diseases. I list the links below.

1. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,278237,00.html
2. http://www.medpagetoday.com/PrimaryCare/PreventiveCare/17072

Yes, folic acid is water-soluble, but that doesn't mean you can't damage your health over a long period of time taking it in high doses. That really goes for a lot of vitamins and minerals. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing, including water surprisingly.

So.... Ive had recurrent BV for over a year. Nightmare. Pain, excruciating during intercourse, itch, smell... just aweful.

I found something that worked for me.

I have tried folic acid, vitamin b, boric acid, all different kinds of probiotics, more acidophilus, Vitamin D, creams, douche (ugh) and antibiotics.

I found what really worked for me was using antibiotics and probiotics together.

This was the process,

Prescription for Flagyl. 7 days, 3 pills a day. Ive used it before with NO success, but when used in conjunction with the products described bellow I had great success.

Two Fem-dophilus a day. This probiotic, that is sold at Whole Foods in the US. or you can order online, contains two strains of rhamnosus and reuteri that are the ONLY strains clinically proven to migrate for your intestine to your vagina. I do NOT recommend using them vaginally as the capsule contains materials that should not be put up there, and could potentially aggravate the vagina more. I take femdophilus everyday, and this is what is recommended. You cannot stop taking the femdophilus when you stop the antibiotic.

After I finished the flagyl, I started using a probiotic as a suppository. This one is safe, as the capsule is vegetarian and does not contain any synthetic materials. It is called Vital-10 by Klaire - Labs. It contains 5+ Billion lactobacillus. Poke a whole in the top, and insert as high in the vagina as possible. Do this for 14 days.

Things finally got back to normal for me.

Suggestion: When you finish your period, insert the suppository for 1-2 days, if you feel like your vagina could use some of the right stuff.

I have tried femdophilus alone, and it does work well (very little - to no smell afterwards) however there was still a very little white/grey discharge stuck to the walls of my vagina that I knew was not normal. I also tried the antibiotics alone, and as soon as they were done it came back.

After this process, discharge is back to clear, mucosal like texture with no smell (just like before) instead of pasty and white.

In the past I had reduced my bv so that it did not smell, but the discharge still did not contain as much lactobacillus as I would have liked (my p.h. was at a 5.5 instead of a 4.5 or lower. Now my ph is a 4.

I really, really hope this works for others. I had tried everything, and was hoping it was as simple as a vitamin D deficiency, but for me, increasing vitamin D was not the answer.

Hope doctors get to figuring this out, because their lack of knowledge on the subject is unacceptable.

Hello girls,

I am new here. I have been reading the posts in this forum for a few months, and thought I should join and share my experiences.

I live in the UK, which means I don't seem to be able to get hold of the Fem-Dophilus or other probiotics that are referred to in a lot of the posts. Any idea how I can get them from the UK?

I, like so many of you whose stories I have read here, had no problems whatsoever until I started having sex with my new partner in February this year. I am 35, and have been taking the same combined contraceptive pill since I was 18.

Within days, I noticed a horrible smell from down below, so started washing down there a lot more thoroughly, (now I know that was just making things worse). Within 10 days I was at the family planning clinic getting tested for STDs, convinced that I had picked up something really nasty from him. They confirmed I had BV and gave me a course of antibiotics. Relieved, I went home and took the week long course. No improvement. And no STDs when the results came back.

Panicked, I looked online. I started taking yoghurt, cider vinegar baths, garlic inserted vaginally, cranberry juice, multivitamins, garlic tablets, acidophilus capsules vaginally and orally, essential oils, folic acid, and eventually H2O2 douches. I was really worried about the H2O2, but it was the only thing that seemed to really make the smell go away. I also noticed it was worse when I was drinking alcohol. Was too scared to try boric acid.

I went back to the family planning clininc to say the antibiotics weren't working, and they gave me Relactagel, a low pH gel to insert daily. It helped a bit but the smell was still unbearable after sex or my period started. Tried makuka honey tampons too, but no help.

Things got really bad when I started bleeding during sex Really bright red, fresh blood, and my regular period was nowhere near due. This had never happened before and was embarrassing and scary. Back to the family planning clinic - they examined me and said I had ectope on my cervix - basically cells from inside my womb were growing on the outside of the cervix and getting knocked during sex, causing bleeding. They said it could be hormonal, and there was no sign of BV whatsoever. I am terrified I have caused this myself because of the H2O2 or honey tampons. Anyone know if this may be true?

I stopped all the treatments except vitamins, acidophilus and garlic capsules orally. I started using BioFem, another vaginal gel, but a lot thicker than the other ones I had tried. This has masked the smell quite well for the last couple of months. I made an appointment with my doctor to discuss the hormones. I suggested I come off the combined pill onto the progesterone only mini pill - have been on that for 2 months and my periods have stopped, which helps. She also suggested I have a smear test done, even though my last one a year ago was absolutely fine.

To my horror it has come back abnormal, and I have to go for a colposcopy at the hospital in just over 2 weeks, where they will examine my cervix with a microscope to find out what is wrong, and may burn off the abnormal cells. I am actually somewhat relieved. At least someone has finally found a problem. The family planning clinic kept telling me the smell was just in my head!

I will update you all with the results, but in the meantime wanted to ask if any of you have had any similar issues with cervical problems causing BV?

Many thanks.

Hi girls! I have been lurking here since last August. There are so many more pages now, wow! It's a huge problem for so many women. At least we're not alone in our isolating condition. I am going to tell you all about my experience. First off, I have never had anything wrong with my vag until August of last year and I am 31. It has been so hard emotionally, not to have confidence that I smell/taste good. That's the hardest part for me. I know how it happened too, and that's another tough thing to face. I made a couple bad choices, ( I had unprotected sex with a sponge in me while on my period, and thought the I should take a diflucan to ward off problems, unknowing that if it ain't broke don't try to fix it ) and now I have a problem that won't go away. I still have it, I don't know if it will (ever?) go back to normal, such a downer after being told how good I taste, etc for many years. BUT, I have gotten it under "control". When I get lazy..sure enough, it gets "off" again.

First off, I took the antibiotics once. They did shit to help that, I just got a yeast infection, took another diflucan, and decided to get off that train, as it was going NOWHERE, I could tell it was just messing up my body more.

this is what helped me-

First off, I realized around the same time I am allergic to gluten and wheat. I had four big symptoms- my hair falling out excessively, severe anemia, (blood dripping from my gums, constant iron taste in my mouth), diarrhea all morning, for like three hours, and..because of that I could not gain weight. I also discovered after I gave that up, that cows milk made me sick as well. It would give me UTIS when I drank it and gas and diarrhea from ice cream. I can tolerate yogurt, cheese and butter thank god. I'm telling ya'll this because sometimes we don't think about how food is affecting us as much as we should, or just don't notice. In a way I am glad my body started reacting more seriously, so I had to figure it out. And I went on a whole health/whole body kick to help with this other problem. I already didn't eat refined sugar or heavily processed foods, simple carbs, and especially yucky yucky soda. It is just..no good for your body.

SO, step one for me was..cutting out all that, and eating a big salad every night for dinner. I mean big. Layers of organic greens, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, avacado, mango, and sweet onions. YUM!

I also began taking (upon the advice of a homeopathist) colloidial silver three times a day, like a half a shot of it.
I used Soverign Silver. Buy the big one, it's four times the amount as the little one, and only costs a bit less than twice the price. It lasts me four months. For the first two weeks I also douched daily with a solution of vapor distilled water (about 1/4 a cup) and a dropperful of silver. This really, really helped my poor vag through the worst of it..and when I'd forget- I could tell. After a few months, I went to twice a day orally, and now once a day, before bed. I swear by this it is along with fem doph the backbone of what keeps me in the clear.

I took the HOMEOPATHIC remedy of borax. I did not feel this did much but I took it when I was through the worst. I feel it is worth a mention because it could help some of you, it's about 8 bucks, and worth a try at that price.

For the first three months of my "I'm gonna get you sucka" quest to kill the monsters living in there, I ate 2 servings of unsweetened greek yogurt a day and took 2 Fem Doph capsules with one serving, and the next I would take 1 Solaray multi dophulis ...just to get all those good bacteria in me as well. Now I just eat one yogurt a day, take 2 fem dophs.

I started taking Country Life Co-enzyme B vitamins. I can say these are truly the best B's. They are not filtered by your liver, they are already in broken down form. I buy them at the health food store when they go on sale, which thankfully seems pretty often. I also began taking Milk Thistle extract, because build up on your liver means nothing in your body is getting cleaned out as well. I am still doing this. I also take cran actin super, which is awesome for UTI,s and your liver/kidneys...I try to think clean thoughts.

I have spent quite a bit of money on all this, so even if you're reading this thinking, " holy crap that's a lot of $$"...I know it seems like it but I began to think of it like this-I can cover all my bases and go commando on this NOW, or keep paying for a longgg time. I truly believe it is a matter of your body having to "unlearn" a pattern of biological reaction down there.

I learned not to use soap on there! It makes me itch now. I used to be able to wash it all day, and it'd be fine. No more.

And my final piece of information is- don't bother with those homepathic suppository type things they sell at CVS and whatnot. It's like 30 bucks..and only works when you're using it.

That's it, that's my experience. I hope this helps some of you. Good luck, and bless all the ladies!!
girlwithwings
I work outside, I can't see how I could possibly have a vitamin d deficency. I have always taken Vit c and zinc combo. Neither of these things (In my experience) stopped me from getting it, or stopped it from happening..that's just me.

I also feel I owe a thanks to all the ladies who came before me- you saved me a lot of time a frustration. Thank you all!

I don't have time to check thru all these pages, but when I visited regularly, I never saw a mention of colloidal silver. There's information out there that seems damning for it, but the only way it can really mess you up is if you were taking A LOT of it, like, drinking half the big bottle in a day or something...all I can say is, for me it really makes a difference.
twelve_percent
Ok! I'm a little worried ladies. I know this is the BV thread, but I'm going to ask you guys anyway. I have what I am hoping is a yeast infection but as WebMD tells me could very well be the clap. It is the first time I have had something of this nature and I would like to know a few things. . .

1) I know that I should start feeling better in a few days if I use the cream every night but if it isn't a yeast infection what am I in for? I already have an appointment set up with my gyno but I would like to be mentally prepared for what will likely happen in there and after.

2) Clap vs Yeast infections: Is there a difference (in your experience) in the length of time it takes for it to be just a pesky itch once in a while to a full blown "OMG I HATE HAVING A VAGINA!" Because I had an itch once in a while for a full week and then suddenly three days ago it progressively got worse and today it really bad.
swt simplicity
Girlwithwings, you should be really careful about the colloidal silver your taking because apparently its not a substance that is proven effective and it's actually considered dangerous according to some articles. I left the link to some articles about it.

1. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/colloidal-silver/AN01682
2. http://women.webmd.com/features/5-home-remedy-no-nos?page=3
3. http://nccam.nih.gov/health/silver/D209.pdf

I'm assuming you already know the risks but ... it's scary knowing your taking something that is considered dangerous with such grave side effects sad.gif .
How much has it been helping you? I've read your previous post and your taking a lot of other things aside from the colloidal silver.
girlwithwings
Actually, swtsimplicity, it helps A LOT. That and the Fem-D matter the most, the rest is just, so I know it's not because of not having enough of this and that. When I don't take it, it comes back and at this point I only take a tiny bit every day. Google bacterial vaginosis and collidal silver, if you want to see other womens real experiences. I am not the only one. The links you provided, are with a school of thought that only Dr's know what is a real cure or real help. I do not believe that, due to this serious mishandling of my son's health, my health, and my father's help. They DON'T have all the answers and seek to discredit anything THEY diid not do a study on, and they don't want to do a study if it's not lining their pockets so?

LIKE I ALREADY MENTIONED "the serious risks" occur when someone is taking an insane amount of the stuff. No, you shouldn't be chugging it. The silver I use has had studies done. Nano silver is being used to clean up toxic waste dumps ...where do the nano particles of silver go when it's done clenaing up...in the ground water. So, apparently they know THAT'S safe. I think it cures or at least puts a serious dent in infections, and I think it's fine if you don't want to explore different options, only go with what the masses believe..I also chose to give birth at home, it was perfect and wonderful, but there's a lot of Dr's who think that's nuts. That's fine, I just make different decisions based on my experiences.

When I don't take my tablespoon of it at night, the smell and itch comes back. I feel it has really helped me, and it's been almost a year, I take very little. I thought is was worth sharing that. The mayo clinic dosen't have money in it tho, so I don't believe they would tell you how much it could help. They'd rather see you take the drugs they make money from. J M 2 cents

I started using metronidazole 3 days ago. I have used it before and drank the whole time. I was never told not too. This time the pharmacist informed me that you weren't supposed to drink on this med. I read the paper I got w/ it and it said to not drink for at least 24 hrs after using it. Has anyone ever drank on this???? Oh....I am using the vaginal gel.

Girlwithwings,

People get misdiagnosed all the time and I know doctors aren't always right. I'm not sure your familiar with my story, but I have first hand accounts of being misdiagnosed which is actually how I came across this forum in 2005-2006. A while back, I actually posted a story about my grandmother based on how she was misdiagnosed evidently died as a result of that. I'm not the type of person that will always believe what I am told either. I like to go by the facts and form my own conclusions based on other data and information either written in books, medical articles, testimonials, magazines and credible Internet sources. I believe in trying what works and also most importantly what is safe.

Not that I'm trying to be offensive but many women have said, "douching with hydrogen peroxide helps me with my bacterial vaginosis, I douche every day, and if I stop douching my symptoms come back" or "using the jamu stick at night helps get rid of my bacterial vaginosis, but my symptoms come back after I stop using it." But I also point out that it only works temporarily, and if it works temporarily it doesn't cure anything, it simply works as a temporary fix.

I personally feel people should maintain a balance between common sense and logic. If you want to try something that may not be safe and something happens farther down the line because of it, your going to have to deal with the consequences however grave they maybe. There are loads of stories about people that have taken supplements that weren't regulated and they were contaminated with weird chemicals that weren't stated on the table of contents or ingredient list and awful things happened to them. Most of the time these people were not compensated; even if they did take legal action, they usually settled with a large sum of money which isn't surprising. We are living in a capitalist nation where money talks and people can be easily bought out. It's not wise to totally downgrade the medical community considering millions of lives have been saved and prolonged as a result of medical care.

It's great that people like to share their ideas with others that can benefit from it, especially since conventional treatments don't always work. I've tried conventional treatments that didn't work and my doctor actually prescribed me something that wasn't conventional at the time. So I'm not totally closed off to new ideas at all.

About the bit where you talked about nano particles in the water ... there are actually many things in the water these days ranging from birth control pills to illegal substances in small amounts. And not too long ago I watched a documentary about fracking fluids being leeched into local water including water wells. The "big brother" natural gas companies said this water was safe to drink even though the water could be lit on fire and people were developing illnesses and getting sick from drinking it. People would get their water tested and it would have high levels of strange chemicals. Most of these people did get paid large sums of money to stay quiet and/or got their water pumped in special tanks that purified it. Clearly those things are bad and shouldn't be in the water. Just because that stuff is there doesn't make it alright. There are many things in society that need to be addressed that aren't-- too many actually.

Long slow clap for Swt Simplicity. Very well said & quite diplomatic, I must say. I commend you for your class & insight.

Quick question. I have read a large part of this thread, but not all of it yet, so apologies if someone has already posted answering this. Can oral sex aggravate BV?

I have read articles stating "the vagina is much cleaner than the mouth". If you have gum disease, I guess there are bacteria in the mouth that can be transferred to the vagina. Are these the same bad bacteria that cause problems with BV?

Should I stop giving and receiving oral sex in case this is part of the problem? Any advice greatly welcomed as I have not found this topic covered anywhere on any of the sites I have looked on. I hope it is not too much of a taboo subject for the forum...
auralpoison
I dunno anything about oral exacerbating BV, but if you are really concerned you can always pick up a dental dam. I can't seem to find any non-latex alternatives like nitrile dams, but you could buy a box of nitrile gloves & DIY if you have any allergy issues with latex.

for the past year i thought i had bv. i went to the doctor around 5 times to get a pap/swab. each time a regular family doctor did the test. this month, i went to europe and saw an extremely intelligent gyno. he did a test and it came up positive for chlamydia, mycoplasma and urealplasma. i had chlamydia and every single time it came up negative on the tests done here. the gyno told me that a family doctor is not skilled enough to do a proper swab because chlamydia lurks way back and you have to know where to swab for it. the idiot doctors here had no idea how to even do a proper test. in north america, they do not test for mycoplasma and urealplasma because they do not believe it needs to be treated. they are just lazy. isolating these bacteria is tough and you have to test the swabs twice, which is more time and money.

the reason your "bv" keeps coming back, is because you've never treated it properly. you have to do a dna probe to see what bacteria you have and then you have to drink antibiotics for THAT SPECIFIC bacteria. metro is just a general bacteria killer, but if you dont have general bacteria, and rather something more complex, well then metro is a waste of time.

i am extremely disappointed with the health system here in north america. for the doctors here to know so little information about a condition that is so common is really disturbing. you ladies probably don't even have "BV" ... DOES BV EVEN EXIST????? just an easy thing for doctors here to call it.

hello ladies, I have a few questions. I think my sequence of events started with antibiotics which caused yeast then bv then i got yeast again within 3 days on flagyl, the bv came back after two treatments for yeast. OI. I Ordered Fem Dophilus from amazon and read the box and it says keep refrigerated. It wasn't cold and I wonder if they keep it refrigerated at all since there was no stickers on the box. Usually there is a bright orange sticker. So basically I'm wondering if it's even going to work at all now. And my other question is I am starting a course of Metrogel what are your suggestions as to when I should start the FemD during or after treatment?? Any opinions welcome. Thank you.

Tebasmm,
If the product wasn't cold, I would assume some of the bacteria in it may have died already. You should just buy RepHresh Pro-B and not worry about the product parishing in-transit, both Femdophilus and RepHresh Pro-B are the same thing. You should always take probiotics along with antibiotics but not too close together. Just take the probiotic a few hours (preferably two to three hours) after you've taken the antibiotic to avoid the chances of the antibiotic killing the bacteria before it has a chance to work. You should also continue taking the probiotic after treatment for as long as you want (the longer the better), but take it for at least two weeks after you've finished your course of antibiotics.

Good luck!
