I've never heard of those products but there is a product in the U.K. called Balance Activ (without the "e" at the end), it specifically claims that it can help treat and prevent bacterial vaginosis. You should consider trying that if you haven't already. Most women that have tried it before say that it works well. It's not like the RepHresh Vaginal Gel, it has different ingredients.
From my personal observation, any woman that experiences constant bacterial vaginosis infections usually needs to find some long term form of treatment. It may not be a long round of antibiotics but it could be a combination of various things. You should also consider eating plain organic yogurt preferably Chobani or Stonyfields yogurt. I've been eating it regularly (twice a day) even though it doesn't taste all that great alone (Stonyfields). You can add sweet fruits like bananas and strawberries to make it sweeter. Eating yogurt mainly the kind with no B.S. in it helps keep your intestinal flora and micro flora (which affects the vaginal flora as well) in check. When a yogurt has a lot of B.S. in it, that stuff can make the situation worse and it's bad for your system anyway, so you may as well avoid it. That's why I don't recommend that people eat yogurts like Activia or Yoplait and so on. It's loaded with added sugar and artificial stuff. I've been on other forums where women that were totally healthy to begin with ate Activia and it actually caused strange vaginal odors and discharge. Once they stopped eating the Activia their symptoms went away. Activia would also cause diarrhea and constipation which is pretty counterproductive. Some yogurts have over 34 grams of sugar which is more sugar that's in an 8 oz. can of soda.
A diet high in sugar is a big no-no if your trying to heal from an infection. Because sugar actually decreases your immune function temporarily. I wrote about about this on my blog a while ago. Here is a link to the article:

I had a really bad smell, I mean, I could smell a small room..When I told the doctor this they just thought I was crazy.

check out my post.I'm happy that you are finally diagnosed! It's a wonder doctors didn't notice anything unusual. I've been in the same boat of dealing with a vaginal odor and my gynecologist claiming that she can't smell anything. How high were your levels of trimethylamine? How do you control it?

Well, I just found out and it all clicked, I am trying to figure out how to control it,(Its been really hard because everthing has choiline in it) but knowing what I have, I think is half the battle.
Oh all the gyn told me the same thing..(I dont smell anything), yea but everyone else can..smh
But most doctors have no idea about TMAU.

Hey ladies,
so I DID'nt have BV a couple of weeks ago- I had yeast (Blech!!) went to the OBGYN, got cultured, came back YEAST... so used diflucan, and garlic (fresh raw garlic) inserted in the vagina at the same time as using diflucan because it seemed diflucan wasnt helping much.
Great news yeast is gone- I still had some weird symptoms, and some light odor. went back to the OBGYN, she said everything looked/smelled ok but did another vaginal culture... came back pos for BV yes- thats right just BV- no yeast this time
my question
1) do you think the garlic suppository caused more of an imbalance?
2) They gave me an Rx for metrogel and a pill for diflucan to take after im done using the antibiotic gel... to ensure i dont get a yeast infection
I do take fem-dophilus
so Im not sure whats going on with my body- as I have not had a vaginal infection in 3 years since using and discovering Fem-D
But the thing is, I got sick of paying $30 monthly for the 60 day supply, so i simply stopped taking Fem-D for a month, and wham all this came about.
what do u think? how do i get back on balance?
Im afraid to use the metrogel because I don't want another yeast infection
to be honest, the yeast infection was WORSE than the BV
the BV is barely giving me symptoms, just a little itchy and a little smell...
but i def wanna get balanced
I also recently purchased the newer UK product Balance Activ. which has these ingredients: Lactic Acid Glycogen, Propylene Glycol, Methylhydroxypropyl Cellulose, Sodium Lactate, Water. pH 3.8
Being its not available in the USA- it was quite expensive to have it shipped here, so I only ordered 1, seven day treatment. I guess I can try that before resorting to the metrogel... Lord I hate antibiotics
any advice??
should i treat with metrogel and risk a Yeast infection?
or should I just try balance activ and stick with taking fem-d??

but i am happy my yeast overgrowth is gone

When I thought I had BV, I found one of the best doctors for BV(he only deals with BV) his name is Dr. Nyirjesy from Philadelpha.
Maybe you might want to give his office a call and ask theese question, he is the best (yes I drove all the way to Phili and found out I didnt have BV)

I live in California so going to Phili is not really an option =(
but... I am def Dx with BV. the test came back positive for gardinella (wp?)

2) They gave me an Rx for metrogel and a pill for diflucan to take after im done using the antibiotic gel... to ensure i dont get a yeast infection

so Im not sure whats going on with my body- as I have not had a vaginal infection in 3 years since using and discovering Fem-D
But the thing is, I got sick of paying $30 monthly for the 60 day supply, so i simply stopped taking Fem-D for a month, and wham all this came about.
what do u think? how do i get back on balance?

Being its not available in the USA- it was quite expensive to have it shipped here, so I only ordered 1, seven day treatment. I guess I can try that before resorting to the metrogel... Lord I hate antibiotics

I would suggest that you try to not insert garlic vaginally since it doesn't work against all yeasts. Oddly enough, I tried it at one point and according to this study, it is effective against the yeast that I had, but after I stopped using it my symptoms came back. And the garlic burned at first and caused inflammation when I used it for too long even when I wrapped it in gauze. Boric acid was more effective in my case.
You want to be careful about vaginal odors. They have a knack for starting off not so bad and getting increasingly worse as the infection starts to set it
. I suggest that you start taking the Fem-Dophilus again, especially if you want to prevent this infection from getting worse. I also suggest that you cut back on sugar or try avoiding it until this infection clears up. A diet high in sugar will hinder your immune function. I notice that cutting back on sugar helps me because whenever I do eat sugary stuff, it causes a white coating on my tongue. Apparently, it's not thrush. Just a coating. I'm still in the works of trying to figure out what that is all about. I've gotten it checked and my general practitioner says it's in relation to the fact that I have eczema and my body is just highly reactive to stimulants and certain foods. I still don't know exactly what she means by that. So I've been experimenting with anti-inflammatory things.The vaginal flora is very sensitive. If you jump from one broad-spectrum anti-fungal to a broad spectrum anti-bacterial, you would be very lucky if nothing bad came of that. The vaginal flora needs time to recalibrate in-between treatments to prevent an infection from setting in. so i just noticed fem-dophilus has dextrose in it which is a sugar
and I have been inserting these vaginally in the past...never had an issue with them
but wow...dextrose, thats not good.... I ordered ecovag instead because you can insert these vaginally and they dont have sugar/starches in them
guess ill just do Fem-D orally from now on and wait for my ecovag and balance activ

Do you know if you had clue cells when they tested you for BV? You said you didn't have BV, but had odor, but you found out you had that other disease. I'm wondering if you had the clue cells, because I do, but don't always have the BV. I'm just wondering if I have the thing you have.

Well, I did have BV, because I had the odor, so they put me on flagyl, but a long course, since it's recurrent. It keeps coming back. So, I had a follow up appt. and they checked and I didn't have the BV, but had clue cells. I'm still taking the flagyl, I have to be on it 4x a week for 3 months. No fish, but I still have a musty smell, which I'm guessing is the clue cells. I never heard about the other infections until I came to this site. At my next appt., I am asking for a culture.
I know my flora got messed up since I was on antibiotics regularly since I was kid, so it's a long road for me to try and get it back to normal.

so it's not necessarily BV unless you test pos for the bacteria that causes BV
I would ask for a complete vaginal culture
making sure its not a dif bacterial infection

it produced white chunks like yeast but it wasnt yeast/candida
it was bacterial
i was using tea tree ooil suppositories back than for the group b strep
thank gawd i no longer have GBS over growth
but ask what your test came back pos for

I don't think they did a thorough culture, because I believe that needs to be sent to the lab. they looked at mine under their microscope and saw clue cells. I am going to ask for a thorough culture next time.

thats the prob with MANY doctors now a-days they don't do what they always should...CULTURE IT
yes looking under the microscope helps
it can tell you if you have yeast budding or bacteria
if you have yeast- they can sometimes see it
and if you have "clue cells" that simply is a way of saying- yes there is some abnormal bacteria in there
normally what is common is BV
but there are a PLETHORA of bacteria that can cause imbalance/infections in the vagina- LOTS
and most doctors will also tell you group b strep over growth does NOT cause symptoms, however if you google it or look back on this board youll find plenty of females that GBS overgrowth bothers
I will be honest and tell you- Gardnerella (BV) has nothing on heavy GBS over growth- at least for me
this BV I have is not even that bothersome- a little smelly... a little itchy sometimes/ or just weird watery discharge but for the most part NOTHING
when I had HEAVY overgrowth of GBS I had PAIN- I cant describe it... i just know when I have it, and knock on wood i never get it again
I went through HELL having GBS overgrowth non-stop from sept 2002-Jan 2005
finally after finding this board, and hearing about FEM-DOPHILUS I tried it (Im not a doctor, so im not going to rec it vaginally) but i did use it vaginally and orally, and also a dose of 7 days on the clinda vaginal cream before FEM-D
after that- no symptoms, went back to the doctor for a follow up.... and my GBS was GONE and never returned (Im praying it stays away, which is one reason why Im back on FEM-D and trying to get rid of this BV)
the main symptoms I had with GBS was this weird thick white-ish discharge (similar to BV) and a musty smell... but NOT FISHY, the smell would come and go.... i cant explain it, and of course this weird vulvar pain..not too painful, but annoying enough it bothered me... not as bad a yeast infection symptoms but similar....
and i will say this BV is a pain because I dont like the feeling of being imbalanced...esp since I prob caused it with the garlic inserts being I was so paranoid about the yeast infection i had a few weeks ago

yes looking under the microscope helps
it can tell you if you have yeast budding or bacteria
if you have yeast- they can sometimes see it
and if you have "clue cells" that simply is a way of saying- yes there is some abnormal bacteria in there
normally what is common is BV
but there are a PLETHORA of bacteria that can cause imbalance/infections in the vagina- LOTS
and most doctors will also tell you group b strep over growth does NOT cause symptoms, however if you google it or look back on this board youll find plenty of females that GBS overgrowth bothers
I will be honest and tell you- Gardnerella (BV) has nothing on heavy GBS over growth- at least for me
this BV I have is not even that bothersome- a little smelly... a little itchy sometimes/ or just weird watery discharge but for the most part NOTHING
when I had HEAVY overgrowth of GBS I had PAIN- I cant describe it... i just know when I have it, and knock on wood i never get it again
I went through HELL having GBS overgrowth non-stop from sept 2002-Jan 2005
finally after finding this board, and hearing about FEM-DOPHILUS I tried it (Im not a doctor, so im not going to rec it vaginally) but i did use it vaginally and orally, and also a dose of 7 days on the clinda vaginal cream before FEM-D
after that- no symptoms, went back to the doctor for a follow up.... and my GBS was GONE and never returned (Im praying it stays away, which is one reason why Im back on FEM-D and trying to get rid of this BV)
the main symptoms I had with GBS was this weird thick white-ish discharge (similar to BV) and a musty smell... but NOT FISHY, the smell would come and go.... i cant explain it, and of course this weird vulvar pain..not too painful, but annoying enough it bothered me... not as bad a yeast infection symptoms but similar....
and i will say this BV is a pain because I dont like the feeling of being imbalanced...esp since I prob caused it with the garlic inserts being I was so paranoid about the yeast infection i had a few weeks ago

Ugh, what an ordeal! Mine is musty too, now that the BV is gone. I am still on the flagyl pills, so no BV, but I still have that other odor, which I am so so SO fed up with at this point. You having the same, I am wondering if it's strep. I need to find out, but should finish my flagyl course, so the BV maybe stays away for good.
I tried fem-D, orally, and didn't notice any difference at all. Now I've run out, so I haven't been taking it for awhile. I am taking a liquid probiotic, but they don't help me much -- none of them do.
I hope I have strep because now I am afraid I have TMAU like S. She had the same odor, but if you don't have it, maybe i don't.

Good morning, ladies! I have been a part of this forum since 2005 or 2006, but I haven't been very active in the past couple of years...just lurking. I have battled BV since I was 18 and I'm 25 now. I have tried everything...the antibiotics (all of them!), hydrogen peroxide, folic acid, internet scams, etc. The only thing that ever worked for me was making my own boric acid capsules...however, the results of that only last as long as I'm using the boric acid. I knew Fem-Dophilus had been recommended quite a bit, but it has dairy in it and being vegan, I didn't really want to take it. Well, I finally caved this weekend. I bought some from Whole Foods and took two pills Sunday night and two pills Monday morning. By Monday afternoon I was pretty amazed to discover that the smell and discharge of my BV was completely gone. I mean, it worked better and faster than when my doctor put me on meds. I can't believe it. I'm going to keep taking two a day for a month, and then decrease to one a day for as long as they make the product. I can't believe that this one probiotic can solve a problem I have tried for years to fix. Anyways...I know this won't work for everyone, but I strongly recommend giving it a try.

Amen, Sassy. I've taken at least one Fem-dophilus orally per day (and periodically use one vaginally, as the patent-holder for this probiotic affirms is fine to do) for about 4 years now. No more BV-yeast cycles! Amazing product!

I'm so glad to hear that it worked for you too! And it doesn't worry me about doing harm to my body (i.e. constant boric acid use). I'm so excited to have found this.
Also, Maggie, or anyone else who has had success with Fem-D...how does sex affect it? Do you find yourself staying normal even after sex? Or do you need to take an extra probiotic afterwards. Just curious. Haven't tested the waters on that yet.

Those tampons sound great -- if they work.
Read this article. The 2nd one is better. It is on reducing vaginal PH. I am going to try this. I think it's why probiotics don't help me. You have to have the right PH to colonize probiotics.

i don't quite agree you have to have the right pH level to colonize the good bacteria.
The good bacteria actually help restore your vaginal pH.
It may be your using a pro-biotic thats not working for you? or you may need to take them a certain way...
all i can tell you is fem-d is what normalized my pH and its why im finally back on it

It's one of those old wives tales that people swear by: eating pineapples improves the vaginal scent and taste. Some say it makes the vaginal secretions taste sweeter and smell good. I actually like eating pineapples. I plan on doing some research on this.

Well...I've tried them all, including fem-d and they did nothing. I get good brands too, not cheap stuff. That article says the more acidic ph allows the good bacteria to take hold more and it makes sense to me.

Oh, I DID do the whole natural approach for years. Years. I took tons of probiotics, ate tons of yogurt, cut sugar out of my diet completely -- not as easy as you think because it's in everything. No improvement. I've only recently, aside from a few courses of flagyl here and there a long time ago, gone to conventional meds and it's better than it's ever been, but not perfect. I still have clue cells.
So, I went to get fem-d again, but then I figured: Why can't I get another good probiotic that has the same strains of probiotics, but is more reasonably priced. I found one that is the exact same strains and amounts of probiotics as Fem-D on sale for $9. And it's enterically coated (so it survives the stomach acids) and doesn't contain dextrose and potato starch and all the other fillers they use, so I can insert it too. I was hesitant to use their brand internally with all that other junk in it. 1/3 of the price! Worth a shot. Fem-D didn't work for me anyway, so let's see if this does. At least I got three for under the price of one measly bottle of theirs, if it does or doesn't. It also contains acidopholus, which is good for insertion, which fem-d doesn't have.

But every med article I've read independent of rephresh stresses the importance of low PH. It's even one of the qualifiers for a diagnosis of BV (Greater than 4.5 PH).

which pro-biotic did you buy for $9? Im curious because Fem D is expensive
although the vitamin shop sells it for $29 for 60 capsules
and i looked into repHresh Pro-B and it has the exact same ingredients as Fem-D but its actually more expensive
its sold here at CVS for $29.99 for only 30 capsules and it has dextrose and potato starch in it.

"clue cells" please please please make sure they culture you to know exactly which bacteria is causing the clue cells.
Clue cells don't automatically mean gardernella bacteria.
Like I mentioned a while ago... when I had clue cells in the past- it was always groub b strep overgrowth
never the bacteria that cause BV
and this time-when I was Dx with Gardernella for the first time ever...i didnt even have "clue cells"

just a thought; i kinda dislike how this folder is called "our bodies our hells". I don't find my body a hell... i just find it an imbalance sometimes

So, I have an appt. coming up with the gyno. I am going to ask them to do a culture and a PH test on me. I'll pay extra for it, if I have to...So curious to see if I have clue cells while on flagyl.
and im curious to know exactly what bacteria you have thats causing your issues. It would be great to know your flagyl is doing its job working on the right bacteria. I hope you have'nt spent all this time on flagyl with a bacteria it wont work on... let alone a misdiagnosis...

So, I have an appt. coming up with the gyno. I am going to ask them to do a culture and a PH test on me. I'll pay extra for it, if I have to...So curious to see if I have clue cells while on flagyl.

It wasn't a misdiagnosis. I definitely had BV with the discharge and odor I had -- they were both textbook. I wonder if I have a lot of yeast too and maybe some strep b. The odor is gone, but I still have discharge and a salty/musty smell that I am not crazy about, but no characteristic BV odor.
