What kind of potato? Did she peel it first? Was it sliced lengthwise like french fry width or matchstick thin? Or was it sliced into medallions? How many slices?
Please find out. I'm actually going to try this. Can't hurt might help, right?

Just something I thought you all would like to read.

Vaginal pH as a marker for bacterial pathogens and menopausal status.

Caillouette JC, Sharp CF Jr, Zimmerman GJ, Roy S.

Loma Linda University, Pasadena, CA, USA.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to confirm the elevation of vaginal pH expected in patients with bacterial pathogens in premenopausal women and to examine the relationship of serum follicle-stimulating hormone and estradiol levels to vaginal pH in menopausal patients without and with hormone replacement therapy. STUDY DESIGN: Vaginal pH was determined by phenaphthazine (Nitrazine) pH paper in 253 patients seen in a solo private practice for routine speculum examination. None of the patients were pregnant. Measurements were made of serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and estradiol for 172 patients and vaginal cultures were taken from 82 patients. Vaginal pH was correlated with vaginal cultures and serum follicle-stimulating hormone and estradiol levels by use of statistical analysis. RESULTS: Vaginal pH was elevated in all premenopausal patients with documented bacterial pathogens. Serum estradiol levels showed an inverse and serum follicle-stimulating hormone levels a direct statistical correlation with vaginal pH in menopausal patients. CONCLUSIONS: Measurement of vaginal pH is useful, effective, and inexpensive for screening purposes. A vaginal pH of 4.5 is consistent with a premenopausal serum estradiol level and the absence of bacterial pathogens. An elevated vaginal pH in the 5.0 to 6.5 range suggests a diagnosis of either bacterial pathogens or decreased serum estradiol. In patients with an elevated pH, vaginal culture should establish the diagnosis. In the absence of bacterial pathogens, a vaginal pH of 6.0 to 7.5 is strongly suggestive of menopause. Titration of estradiol level by vaginal pH during estrogen replacement therapy may help menopausal women avoid side effects or cessation of therapy.

High numbers of peri- and postmenopausal women had no lactobacilli and no bacterial-vaginosis-associated microorganisms. This nonpathological absence of lactobacilli in women with a Nugent score of 4 was scored as 4, and this group was considered separately from the intermediate flora group. A score of 4 was obtained for 2.1% of fertile women, 11.4% of perimenopausal women, 44.1% of postmenopausal women without HRT, and 6.9% of postmenopausal women with HRT. The physiological reduction in lactobacillus colonization of the vagina in postmenopausal women does not cause an increase in bacterial-vaginosis prevalence. Reversion of lactobacillus flora to premenopausal levels due to HRT does not increase the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis in postmenopausal women.

Yes, please find out. Becuase I eat potato's all the time, and I know I'm not allergic to that!! I want to try it also, since I know longer can use the boric. By the way, anybody want mine? I have two bottles and two bags of 00 caps!!
D double U
Slice them like you would potato wedges and peel them. Slice it in a way that will comfortable fit your vagina. And they were regular potatoes. She only used one but I dunno that if you add more it may increase effectiveness
jewelscando
and how long do you leave it in?

Well ladies..........I went to the hospital today and my blood pressure was 161/100 and I had to stop the diet pills and birth control until I can see my regular doctor. This sucks! I hope it's just the trim spa.

jewelscando: have you been checked for sugar or glucose intolerance?
jewelscando
No I have not. Went to the doctor today and they had me waiting for over 45 Minutes. Had to leave because I had a meeting to get to. Rescheduled for Wed. I'm going to tell them about the Boric. Rash is getting better on my left arm, still spreading and worse on the right arm. Forehead is better, in certain area's. Where the rash was, it's bright red, and still rash below it, spreading towards my temples. Strangling feeling comes and goes. Seems the more stress I have, the worse it gets. Anyways, that's all for now.
sassy
I haven't used boric for about 3 weeks now and my rash on my left leg is still there, but it is fading. It sounds a bit different than jewels rash. The skin isn't red...I just have dots or bug-bite size bumps.

Jewels: I hope everything goes well at the doctor. I would find it hard to believe anything was really wrong related to the boric if you stopped it so long ago. Most allergic reactions occur in the first 24-hours of using a product. I don't know what would cause your symptoms, though.
jewelscando
Yeah, that's what I thought Sassy. Because I know I started the boric in July, and I did not get the rash until the end of August. So, I also find it hard to believe that it's related to the Boric. Because I have it for so long now, I'm starting to pin down a few things. 1. My job, which is stressfull. 2. The location I've been working in. I started working there towards the end of August. And I'm wondering if there's something in the air there that's making me break out like this. Then my last resort, is the boric. Since it was entered Vaginally, maybe it took a while to get through my systom and that is why it's in different area's of my body. Oh well, who knows. I do know that the B.V. is back with a vengeance, and there's nothing I can do about it right now. And that sucks.

Just wanted to share this with you all... I was browsing around the net and found this.

Question:
I am looking for a home remedy for Bacterial Vaginosis. Is there anyone out there that knows one that works?

Answer:
Definitely do the pure cranberry juice. It should take about two days before you feel some relief. Yogurt is also a good option, but make sure it is plain yogurt. I know, it doesn't taste so good without sugar, but the bacteria feeds off of sugar so stay away from it. This is also why you need pure cranberry juice and not like a cranberry juice mix. You should also just stay away from sugar in general for a couple of days. Oh, and drink plenty of water. Hang in there.

I know people have talked about apple cider vinegar before but I just tried drinking it recently. I drop about a teaspoon or so into half a glass of water in the morning and again at night for two days. You could drink it this way before every meal as well. I'm crossing my fingers because I was definitely on my way to a full blown infection after my period and after using a mild acv vaginal wash...not really a douche but did some yoga in my shower to get it in the kitty. I did this w/just salt water for two days which helped inflammation and yesterday w/salt and acv. The smell and discharge is gone??!! I won't do any more washes since I think you're suppose to minimize the number of times you do that but will continue the drinking the acv every day and after my next period, I hope to have good news.

Ok everyone. Went to the doctor today, and spilled the beans on the Boric. I cannot believe how scared I was. I practiced for an hour what I was going to say!! And while I was talking to her, it was as if I was having an outer body experience, like it wasn't me really speaking. Why the hell are we so scared to talk about this?? She seemed discouraged herself with B.V. and is at a loss as to why we get it and it won't go away. She had never heard of the Boric as helping and was actually very excited about it and she said she's going to do research on it, to help other patients.

As far as the rash, she said it is DEFINATELY NOT FROM THE BORIC. So I'm thanking the good Lord for that one!! She said had it been from the boric, it would not have taken close to two months to show itself. She also does not believe that it is from the products I use, because of the fact that it is in localized area's. She sent me for some blood work, and she's thinking that I have like a staff infection (internally), and that is what's causing the rash.

She's going to do some research on my rash in the meantime and wants to see me back in a week or two, depending on if it get's worse or not. Anyways, I get to go back on the Boric!! Yeah!!
sassy
Yay to jewels! I have a rash as well, but of course I get weird random things all the time so it can definately be completely unrelated. Let us know if your blood work says anything.
fedup
I've been on the boric for a week and it's not helping. I go see my doctor next month, even though I know they arent going to be able to help me. How long does the boric take to work? Anybody know? I dont know what to do. I wish this thing would just go away.
chachaheels
fedup, have you had any kind of diagnostic tests done? Your symptoms may not be BV, as there are so many other ailments with similar symptoms. Also, boric acid treatments usually go at least 2 weeks, at 600g boric acid per suppository, usually one or two times a day. You might have to give it more time--but if you haven't ruled out other ailments, you may be using the boric acid in vain.

Neverending, Blood pressure should be taken at least 3 times in your doctor's office before you can get a "true" reading. Most patients experience some kind of anxiety (white coat syndrome) which causes the gauge to record a false blood pressure reading. I usually take it at the beginning, a few minutes later when we're talking about something else, and once again before we wrap up. To get a real idea of what someone's blood pressure is really doing, I ask people to monitor their blood pressure for 2 weeks straight, and record their numbers. Then we take an average. I hope yours isn't elevated for any reason other than the typical anxiety most people feel.

Boric acid is an antiseptic disinfectant. It stops fermentation and putrefaction. That is one reason why it works.

Fedup....

When I started using Boric Acid...It worked instantly. The smell was gone the next day.

How do you make the ACV wash and the salt water wash? Meaning what are the measurements, and also how have you been administering them? For how long and how many times a day?

Let's get specific here people! Theres no risk of TMI on this thread and we're all willing to try ANYTHING!
I gave the potato a whirl yesterday. Theres a bit of improvement but that had started previously. I think the boric has helped a bit. There doesn't seem to be so much discharge and the smell isn't as pungent.

I recently found this site. It's so nice to know that I'm not alone in this. I'm not a freak! I've been fighting BV for nearly a year now.
I've been on the same brand of birth control pills since I was 16 (I'm now 33), and I don't recall any change in my diet or my habits around the time this started. I don't know what caused it or why it won't go away. Before this I had had one yeast infection my entire life! Why did I get this?!?!
The MetroGel worked the first time I used it. The BV came back after 4 or 5 months and hasn't really gone away since. I just finished two weeks of Metronidazole pills with NO change.
My problem is a little different from most in that I have no bad smell (I did the first time, but not since). I mainly just have a problem with discharge. I've been reading the posts about boric acid and am thinking of giving it a try. Does it just work for the smell or does it make the discharge go away too?
Thanks for any help you can give me...newbie

FYI, a co worker of mine watched the news last night and there was a lady on there who developed a rash, which looked like mine. After 2 months of endless doctors visits of getting the same B.S. I did, (alergic to products, alergic to something) they finally ran some more tests and found out she had WEST NILE VIRUS. Right before I got this rash, I had been eaten alive by masquitos on my legs. Never put two and two together because I though you got deathly ill with West Nile. Obviously I was wrong. Another symptom is a stiff neck. Hence, my strangling feeling?? Anyways, I have a call in to the doctor, to be tested for West Nile. So, I will keep you all posted.

Aggravated: Welcome to the board!
chachaheels
Jewels, the stiff neck with WNV comes from enlarged glands at the base of the skull--it's the back of the neck that feels stiff and is actually swollen. Whenever I feel those glands swell I think the infection is serious because it is so close to the brain in that location.

Also, if you have a rash around the vaginal area, you can check out the glands in the inguinal area to see if they're swollen too (these are the glands you'll find where the thighs join the trunk). Sometimes they feel painful if they're swollen.

I hope it isn't west nile.
jewelscando
I don't have a rash on or near my vagina. Only both arms from my elbow down to my hands, on the top of my arms, and all over my forehead down to my temples, and a little bit on my chest.

Have a massive head and chest cold today. I swear, if it's not one thing, it's another.

Hello Ladies...I am a newbie and I am so glad I found this forum!! I have been dealing with BV for the past 4 years. I think the vicious cycle began after I had a tooth pulled and was prescribed an antibiotic. I have been to 3 different GYN's and have taken the Metrogel & Flagyl but the BV comes back after a few days. I've tried rePHresh & it didn't work either. I thought something was wrong with me. It is a relief to know that other women have the same issues and I'm not some freak of nature! This thing is so personal and embarrassing, nobody talks about it. We suffer in silence, yet BV is more common than a yeast infection. Anyway, I've read thru the threads and made notes of various treatments that may temporarily keep the BV at bay. I got some tips from some other sites and a few days ago I've began my own regimen..I'm trying this for 14 days. I will definitely let you all know if this works. Thanks for sharing your experiences and PLEASE keep this thread going!

Pau D'arco & water douche (one time). I bought the bark from a health food store..only cost 80 cents per ounce
1 cup Pau D'arco tea (daily)
1 capsule (orally, each day) Ultimate Flora Critical Care w/50 billion "good" cultures per capsule $15
Hydrogen Peroxide douche (daily--at bedtime) 30 mL (about 6 teaspoons) I did not dilute it with water
Vitamin C 1000mg (orally) I didn't just start this, I've been taking Vit C for years
On one night, instead of the peroxide douche, I inserted an Ultimate Flora capsule, then resumed as usual the next day. So far, the smell is lighter and the discharge has changed from gray to a light tan color.
Wish me luck. If this doesn't work, I will try using 250mg Vitamin C vaginally.

Hey girls. I'm new here and stumbled upon you while researching the hell of BV.

Help! I have had BV for several months and have been on antibiotics twice. Just finished them last week and its already back. I have tried putting yogurt in my vagina on a nightly basis but that hasn't helped either.

I am on Nuvaring for birth control. Its a plastic ring that you keep in your vagina for three weeks and it slowly releases an even low dose of hormones. I have been on it for about 2 years and just started with the BV about 6 months ago. Do you guys think I should take it out and go back on the pill?

Has anyone had success with Cleocin cream? I am calling my doctor tomorrow to request it. I feel like he thinks I am a weirdo for still having this.

Any thoughts are appreciated. I have read lots and lots of past posts that were very informative.

Thanks,
Sara

Hey, new here and still learning. What is MetroGel? I thankfully don't have the smell either just the discharge. Its so horrible though. Its a huge problem. I've had this for about 6 months and been on antibiotics twice. It helped for a couple of days and now its back. I would love for it to go away forever but 5 or 6 months would be great.

Thanks for any info on MetroGel.
Sara

Did it help with the discharge? I don't really have a bad smell but an outrageous amount of discharge.

i hate sports:
MetroGel is a gel containing metronidazole that is inserted vaginally. The tube of gel comes with 5 applicators and is taken once at bedtime for five days (but my doctor told me to wash out 2 of the applicators and use it for 7 days because there is enough gel in the tube for that). The first time I used it, the smell went away the first day (I had the fishy odor the first time, but not since) and the BV was gone for about 5 or 6 months. When the BV came back, I used the gel again...used another 3 tubes throughout the summer, but never had any success again. I just finished 2 weeks of the oral form of metrnidazole and had no success with that either. If you try it, I wish you luck!

Sorry, I forgot to tell you, I didn't notice any discharge the first time I had BV. I just had the fishy smell the first time. The MetroGel took the smell away and I had no discharge. The only reason I knew the BV came back is because the discharge started (with no smell), and I went back to the doctor.
Again, can anyone tell me if the boric acid helps with discharge or just with the odor?
Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the info. I have taken the metronidazole twice, first for one week, then for two weeks. It didn't change anything for me either. I am calling today to try to get the Metrogel. I was totally freaking out last night after discovering this board. I didn't realize that there were so many other people who can't get rid of it and it really upset me. Its comforting, but its scary that I may have the bigger problem of always having it.

I called my mom and told her everything that's been going one and she just kind of didn't get it. She was nice, but was blaming the most random things. And acting like it was my fault because I wear thongs. I mean, maybe she is right but its just so weird because I have been wearing thong underwear for 10 years. I didn't change anything when this happened. I have the same diet, same underwear, same husband, same birth control, same hygiene habits. WHY ME? I did take out my nuvaring last night and I am praying to God maybe that was the cause and I will be able to get every thing back in check.

thanks again,
Sara

Dear Aggravated:

Yes, boric acid vaginal capsules will help with the discharge, since it wipes out the bacteria species causing the discharge & odor.

If the ring caused no problems before I wouldn't worry about it. Hormones have an effect as neverending has proven but I'm assuming only in menopuase or imbalance cases. I would like to get mine checked.
I've done cleocin before when I first had BV. It was one of about 6 treatments I had in as many months. I don't think it did much. It was sandwiched between metronidazol treatments.
Metrogel worsens discharge during tratment, just because theres twice as much up there, but it's helping in theory so don't worry about it. it just gets lumpy and thick. "wet tissue paper" is how they describe it.
Boric has helped minimally with smell and discharge for me after about three weeks. I'm going to keep at it until i run out and if that fails go back to metrogel. I have about 3 boxes because my gyno put me on it for 6 weeks in the spring. it came back after a month though.
I found some online brochure about cheap home treatments for BV. I don't know how legit this is though. I'll post a link if it's worthwhile.
I'm going back to the doc tomorrow morning for the HPV Vaccine and a culture. I'm seeing my normal docs nurse so maybe she'll be more helpful and sympathetic. I hate the other guy but only as much as all the others. I'll tell about the boric and all...

Good luck to the newbies and welcome!

Boric acid seems to be working I took it or three weeks straight and now my period is here and I have no nasty smell. If anyone uses the boric make sure you ask for the antiseptic one as that’s what I have been told is the most effective and this is the one that has been working for me. I don’t think the BV is caused by diet as I have been a vegetarian for 13 years so my diet is pretty constant. I seriously think the BC pills threw my system out of whack. I plan on continuing to use the boric for 2 x a week. It has helped with the discharge as well; however my bigger issue was the smell. The smell of the sea…however right now everything seems to be fine. I have been having sex but with condoms and I just feel a bit dry but its better than being smelly.

Thanks

1. age? 22
2. how long have you been battling BV? off and on for 5 years
3. married/ LT relationship or sexually active with more than 1 partner or not sexually active or other? LT relationship for the past year but little sex due to the BV. Celebate for quite some time before
4. main symptoms?. Discharge and smell, particularly during and after sex
5. rate odor on scale 1-10 1-being no smell at all 10- horrific: I'd say a 6 now. It's improved but also varies

7. what have you tried to get rid of BV? metronidazol, cleocin, metrogel, some 4 pills I had to take all at once, hydrogen peroxide douches, Vit C vaginally and orally, acidophillus orally, boric acid, potato LOL! I've had partners treated with metronidazol twice
8. what do you think originally caused your BV? New partners? The pill?(though i didn't get BV until 2 years after i was on it and was no longer taking it)
9. what birth control are you using, if any? IUD ( i know, I know but this all started before i got one), just started condoms again to help the smell and prevent. Now the doc wants me on a low dose pill starting next month in case it's hormones. it will be an immaculate conception if I ever get pregnant!
10. how many drs. have you been to regarding this problem and you experiences? god i don't know! I'm going to guess 5 or 6
11. thongs or regular panties? I used to not wear underwear. God I miss that! now i'm constantly wearing a pad on top of that... pads are the devil and bane of my existance.

So the doc yesterday did the quick test that takes 10 min and it was negative!? maybe because i used boric the morning before. we'll see what the culture says but now she wants me on the pill. I'm wary, shouldn't they test to see if my estogen is low before they go trating me for it? I take st johns wort for depression so I'm unsure about all of this. Got the HPV vaccine though, hurt like hell and have two more to go but no warts or cancer for me!

I was sleeping with an ex when I got BV the first time. We had lots of sex and never had any problems. We stopped seeing each other and I had no sex between mid January and May. The BV came back anyway in April. I have a boyfriend now and we've been sleeping together since May. I hid this from him until a few weeks ago. He hasn't noticed a thing and isn't bothered by this at all.

4. main symptoms? The first time was the odor. Since then just discharge.

5. rate odor on scale 1-10 1-being no smell at all 10- horrific I guess a 2...normal

6. rate discharge 1-10 1- being normal vaginal discharge 10- extreme Maybe 4 or 5

7. what have you tried to get rid of BV? What has your partner tried? I have used MetroGel-Vaginal, Metronidazol (oral) and I've been taking Acidophilus. No partners have ever been treated.

8. what do you think originally caused your BV? (if you think you know) I have no idea!

9. what birth control are you using, if any? I've been taking birth control pills (Tri-Levlen 28) since I was 16...never had a problem before.

10. how many drs. have you been to regarding this problem and you experiences? Just one so far...she's ok, but she has no idea how to help me. She just writes a prescription with 3 or 4 refills at a time...they haven't worked.

11. thongs or regular panties? Regular panties (bikinis)...I don't like thongs and have been wearing more cotton since this started.

Pianogirl: "smell of the sea"...haha! I've been a vegetarian for 7 years so I too am confused because my diet is healthy.

I also didn't realize how many younger girls were on here. We need to fix this so we can enjoy our sex lives, damnit!

2. Battling BV for 4 1/2 years
3. Currently 1 partner. When BV first appeared I had just began seeing a new partner but we used condoms. Total of 3 partners in the last 4+ years
4. Light discharge (gray in color) and a strong fishy odor
5. Discharge (1-10): 3
6. Smell (1-10): 8
7. Metrogel, Flagyl, RePHresh. Currently trying probiotics + pau d'arco + hydrogen peroxide douche. This is my first time trying a home remedy..so far, the discharge and smell have decreased significantly but it's too soon to say for sure--as we all know, this sh*# is relentless!
8. I'd say spermicide or just germs from guys' fingers when they play with the kitty or from their mouth when giving oral.
9. Condoms. In the past, I've taken the pill..Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Yasmin. When BV first appeared, I was not on the pill, I was using condoms and VCF (vaginal contraceptive film).
10. 3 doctors.
11. Both. I didn't start wearing thongs until after BV

I truly think there is more to BV than the medical community knows or will admit. If it is just an "imbalance" then it should not be difficult to regain that balance, right? One would think that if you continually take probiotics/lactobacilli orally & vaginally then they should accumulate and eventually "balance" or overpower the bad bacteria. But this obviously doesn't happen. I believe that a key element is that with BV, our bodies ability to produce/regenerate good bacteria is compromised or impaired. sad.gif

Hello Ladies,

I might have spoken to soon. I am on day 5 of my period and out of curiosity I smelled myself and I smelled funny, a mixture of blood and fish. sad.gif I guess I will have to go back on the boric I was off of it for just 5 days (when my period started and now its back. I guess boric acid might have to be used when on a period.

Any thoughts?

Hi Sassy,

It is rather annoying and I do not enjoy sex as I am very paranoid about this problem, it really has damaged my sex life.

What the hell is pau d'arco? I'm interested in trying anything.
And yes, my sex life has been destroyed many times over. I actually had to wash sheets for a guy I was seeing once like 2 years ago. Imagine just trying to have a nice friendly lay and stinking up his whole apartment, staining his white sheets, and trying to explain yourself and save face at the same time. HORRIFIC.

I told my boyfriend the other night that we should start a support group: Women With The Rot and the Men Who Love Them. I seriously pity him...
