Well, now I am going to have to go home, tear down my Hillary Duff posters and burn all of my CDs. I have suddenly lost all respect for her. Oh wait... dry.gif

Seriously, how dumb can one person allow herself to sound?
lilacwine13
So, why is she giving interviews and performing when she thinks women should stay at home, bake pies and take care of their men?

Seriously, don't these people stop and think about how hypocritical and stupid they sound?

Oh wait, they would have to stop and think... dry.gif

I'm not, like, a crazy feminist. I think women definitely need men. Like, I couldn't imagine having a girlfriend!

feminism does not automatically equal lesbianism.
or witchcraft.
or satanism.
or anything else pat robertson said.

that article just highlights her exteme youth, lack of education, and overall shitheaddery.
like, totally, fer sure!

these little girls do not know how good they have it, nor how much further we/they still have to go in society.
LilPinkElectricChair
It doesn't come as surprise, H-Duff has always supported the president and if anyone has watched lizzie Mguire, you'll have noticed what a spineless wimp she was!

Air Force Charges Victim in Her Own Rape

This is beyond sick.
sixelacat
That IS sick, faerietails! The part that gets me the most is that if she's convicted she could be required to register as a sex offender!!! W...T...F....

And who would you write to about that? As a military matter, who could possibly intervene?
culturehandy
The world is beyond fucked up. What a sick fucking place.

The Hilary Duff article was, like, wonderfully charming, like, you know, like. You know, like, what I mean?
knorl05
the hill duff thing is mind numbingly boring in my opinion but it's nice to read/hear yet one more time what people really think just so we know what we're up against. i think their stupidity just adds fuel to our fire. makes you want to go out and educate. duuh 'crazy feminist'. uh yeah.

i do not even know what to say about the air force rape article. that whole experience must have been so humiliating and demoralizing for her. to blame her for being raped alone is a crime. it infuriates me that these people cannot think rationally and humanely and treat this case for what it is independent of the fact they're in the air force.

Your state senators and congresspeople. The pentagon. The media.

Those are the only people who can do anything about it, especially with a LOT of negative media attention.

What the bleeding hell is wrong with One Tree Hill and K-Fed?

August 20, 2007 (Burbank, California) – Kevin Federline will guest star on The CW’s hit drama ONE TREE HILL, as Jason, the cocky, enigmatic frontman for “No Means Yes,” a seminal rock band from the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina. Federline will appear in a multi-episode arc of the show, which returns midseason on The CW.

ONE TREE HILL clearly benefited from the creation of The CW. Paired with the hit “America’s Next Top Model” on Wednesdays last season, ONE TREE HILL saw dramatic year to year growth in the target demographics of adults 18-34 (19%) and women 18-34 (22%).

ONE TREE HILL was created by Mark Schwahn and is executive produced by Schwahn, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola. ONE TREE HILL is a Tollin/Robbins Production in association with Warner Bros. Television.

That situation fills me with so much despair. What she's doing is quite heroic.

are you checking the kafuffle on facebook? they booted a mama for having breastfeeding pics in her profile and are removing others saying that they are obscene! what a bunch of absolute turds! after i write to every one of their advertisers i'm deleting my profile. fuck that noise.

(can you tell i'm pissy? i said the f-word mad.gif )
dj-bizmonkey
this pisses me off on so many levels! yes, DUH, breasts are sexual, i think we can all agree on that one, but babies don't think sexual thoughts. they are thinking, 'mmmmm, this milk is good!' americans need to get over this puritanical bullshit! it's just a symptom of our total objectification of women. who is profiting (other than formula companies) from keeping breasts purely sexual and not seen for what their original, natural purpose is, FEEDING BABIES. get over it people, all other functions, including sex, are secondary, that's what they're there for, that's the definition of mammaries. it's what makes us mammals!!

erinjane
There was a thing I saw as well about a birth video being removed while others are allowed on. http://laurashanley.blogspot.com/2007/08/c...on-youtube.html

This woman's birth video was at home and completely done by herself, while other more medical looking births were allowed to stay up. To make matters worse, youtube denies they even took it down. Check out her post.

There is a facebook group started to support moms who bf- and they've gone and started reporting groups that are TRULY obscene. they've found porn and all sorts of junk on there, and yet breast feeding is no OK? it's bull.
pepper
alotta, i'm not down with the reporting stuff at all, it's not about that for me. i believe in some freedom of expression and besides, retaliation isn't going to solve this issue. what i would like to see is breastfeeding advocated en mass, which is exactly what is happening. i've been involved in lively debate in that facebook group and the majority of the people posting there are intelligent, well read and educated women and a few men.
it's wrong to call breastfeeding obscene and that's the bottom line.
pepper
this is a terrific article about the facebook thing. funny too!

x-posted in the mama thread.
dj-bizmonkey
love love loved it pepper! hilarious and insightful, thanks for posting that link!

y'know this exact issue came up at lunch yesterday. Saw a breastfeeding woman walking down the street (she was being discreet but the baby's head was in "the correct" spot)...bear turned to me and said, "is there a boobie attached to that baby"?

I said, yep, I think so.

He got totally flabbergasted look on his face and said, "well, that's RUDE"...

And I said, "it's only rude because of the baby, isn't it? You aren't offended in New Orleans when women are flashing their chests..."

Bear: "Well, that's a Playing Thing. This is a Utility Thing."

Gah.
faerietails2
Speaking of breastfeeding, what do you all think of this?
nickclick
ergh. people get offended by breastfeeding boobs because they're not always the pretty young white boobs we're sooooo used to seeing, exhibited in the ads in the funny blog pepper posted. and in those ads, they're for hetero men, not babies. and althought men are often babies, they don't like when things they like aren't only for them to like.
ginger_kitty
Treehugger, I want to slap that guy you ran into. I really don't understand why people take offense to breastfeeding. Really it blows my mind that the issue makes anyone uncomfortable.
culturehandy
I guess breasts are supposed to by large, perky and have nothing to do with feeding children. When was the last time you saw an udder in a centrefold. Hey douchebags, that's what breasts are fucking for! The fact that breasts also serve a playful function is beside the point.
pepper
it's so ass-backwards that breasts on display for "play"purposes are just fine but "utility", as in actually being used for a neccessary function, somehow that's offensive. how the FUCK does someone logic that out? that's inexplicable.
dj-bizmonkey
or that people would compare it to urination, which i actually heard a guy say once on a new report about a nurse-in! excuse me, when you take your lunch break, some one doesn't walk up to you with a horrified expression and say, 'i'm very offended, do you think you can take your pasta salad and go eat it in the bathroom?' give me a fucking break.

excellent point nickclick, god FORBID that any part of our bodies would be for something other than the pleasure and entertainment of heterosexual men.

dj on the radio this AM said re the divorce preceedings btwn heather mills and paul mccartney, negotiations lasted 8 hours and she refused to agree to sign documents making her unable to talk about her marriage, keep in mind that there was abuse reported, that heather should "shut the hell up girl and take the money".

wtf, isn't that what all abusive assholes want. for the woman they're abusing to "shut the hell up".

i called them, the WoMaN i talked to was really dismissive. unbelievable.

i want to report them to some women's activist group but i'm so out of touch. who can i call in canada, any ideas?
candycane_girl
It still amazes me how bothered people are by breastfeeding. Actually I should say enrages rather than amazes. Honestly, just to reiterate what you ladies have already said, it's fine if the breasts are just out on display but actually using them to feed a child? Crazy! Just yesterday I was at the doctor's office and a woman pulled out a breast and started feeding her infant son. I could barely contain my horror! dry.gif
phobia
Oh, that reminds me, this one time my friends and I were at the New England Aquarium, and we were sitting in the cafe, and this woman was breastfeeding. My one friend (admittedly, kind of an awkward, shy, weird geeky guy) mentioned that he was "never sure how to act or where to look." I was kind of astounded. I said, basically, why would you act any different than if she was bottle feeding? He really didn't know what to say to that. But, I mean, duh.

Honestly, the breast feeding "controveries" get me so mad I can hardly be coherent. Eesh.
knorl05
it bothers me how much people are bothered by things that are anything outside of their box of familiarity or comfort... although sometimes i'm bothered by things too... but at least i make an effort by pretending that i'm not bothered. ; )
faerietails2
Have you heard about this??!

A judge in Maryland aquitted this guy of domestic abuse for hitting his girlfriend in the face in the parking lot of a gas station (and it was witnessed by a police officer) because, "sadomasochists sometimes like to get beat up."

ohmy.gif !

Did anyone hear about Maxim's list of "un-sexiest women". Of course I wouldn't expect anything less from maxim, but still Sandra Oh and Sarah Jessica Parker are on that list?

maxim's idea of sexy is my idea of so what.

faerie, that judges comments do be... well, they sound like they came from the mouth of "looking." really reprehensable. yes, officer. i have a thing for having my hair pieces pulled out of my head, getting dragged out of my car, and getting slapped at gas stations." WTF!

Hey pepper,
contact the CRTC. http://www.crtc.gc.ca/RapidsCCM/Register.asp?lang=E In Canada they are the regulators of broadcasting and the link I just posted exists for exactly what you're talking about.

My best friend works in a male-dominated workplace, a highschool for mechanical engineering and that sort of thing,
and she was at her first staff party the other night. She's usually pretty dressed down, but this night she was dressed to the teeth.
I mean, it was a PARTY, it's what you do. All the male teachers were literally drooling over her, making inappropriate remarks
and laying their arm around her waist etc. They were fighting over who got to sit beside her at the table, it was silly & she didn't
like it, but thought whatever, it's a staff party, I'll get drunk and go with the flow.

Later the same evening one of the teachers, in his 50s, sat down and talked to her about his wife,
how their sex life was really bad and he didn't feel attracted to her anymore. My friend went "whoa!"
inside but was pretty drunk and didn't protest very firmly, she just tried to smooth it over, said that "you
shouldn't say such things about your wife, I'm sure she's a really good person and that you two can work it out".

THEN HE SAYS HE WANTS TO LICK HER PUSSY!!!

WHAT. THE. HELL?!? When I heard it I just asked "why the hell didn't you just kick him in the balls?",
but then again, I have NO IDEA what I would do if anyone said that to me. She said she feels so fucking
gross and dirty and violated by it, but that up till then he's been this really nice guy, just fatherly and decent,
it came totally unexpected. She doesn't know what to do next. She told a younger, male colleague right after
the incident, but he just said "But you just kept talking to him. I saw you, you didn't look upset. It couldn't have
been that bad". How is that "not bad"?!? Fuck, that is just so textbook sexist - if you're not bawling your eyes out
and bleeding, then it's OK. If you're dressed up & drunk, then you're asking for it.

I guess she could file a complaint, but that would pretty much mean she can't work there anymore,
at least not without a lot of problems. It just seems like such a horrible situation for her.

opheliathemuse
oh my god!

It's something a lot of men don't seem to grasp, that when women get a shock we tend to fall back on our 'training' which is usually appeasement, smoothing over, detachment. That's such a shitty situation. I want a verbal judo course.

sukouyant
I find this terrifying. A woman was gang raped at gunpoint and Judge Deni stated that this case "minimizes true rape cases and demeans women who are really raped." because the woman who was raped worked in the sex industry. So she let the guy go and he orchestrated another gang rape four days later. You can read more about it in these articles I got in my mail today.

When is rape at gunpoint not rape? When it's 'theft of services'

Has already set a disturbing precedent:

In a nutshell: sex worker in Philadelphia agrees business with one client and is then gang-raped at gunpoint. Judge throws out all the assault and sexual assault charges, and treats it as 'theft of services'.

The defendant was charged in an identical incident involving a 23-year-old woman four days later, [district attorney] DeSipio said. Neither woman knew the other and both told identical stories. The other men involved in the attack couldn’t be identified.
DeSipio was so stunned by Deni’s ruling in the first case that he refused to present the second one.
“I wouldn’t demean her that way,” he said of the second victim, calling the proceedings “a farce.” Judge Deni then threw out the second case for failure to prosecute.

To complain (politely):
Complaints form for the Judicial Conduct Board of Pennsylvania
Judge Teresa Carr Deni: 001 215 683 7223
Kenneth Shear, Chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association: 001 215 238 6338

I read about this last week! It's sooooo messed up. I don't know where I read it, but someone said that when she handed down the verdict, it was obvious that she was dripping with disdain and had moral issues with the sex worker. It's disgusting.
anarch
"Viagra in a needle for women" discussion, which led to an argument about orgasms - men's expertise (or lack of due to selfishness or whatever) in "giving" them to women, women "being responsible for their own," orgasms (female and male, but focusing on female in this discussion) as a purely involuntary physiological response ("body betrayal").

I was outraged at several points reading the discussion (emotionally, I line up with the 2nd and 4th links I posted above), but now I'm mostly confused and feeling very ignorant. I didn't know about this body betrayal thing. Christ.

And after all that, it sounds like this "G-shot" is just quackery anyway.

opheliathemuse
oh my god. I think body betrayal has just summed up my entire sex life for the past oh, 8 years.

And...I am rendered almost speechless by that judge. How dare she.
dj-bizmonkey
i'm still not quite sure exactly what body betrayal is.....could some one explain it? anarch, i tried to find an explanation in your links but i got lost in the format of the text. i think i've been staring at the computer for too long.
anarch
Hey dj, sorry my comment was unclear. I have a bad habit of writing sentences that run on for way too long.

All I know about it is from reading this guy's comments, eg, "in rape crisis and counseling the phenomena of “body betrayal” and the issues surrounding it are well known and very serious. When people claim that sex happens in the brain, they're making a good point but they're overstating the case. A whole bunch of sex happens at the genitals and is part of an involuntary response." This comment goes on for a while in more detail.

A little further down is a link to a 2004 study published in The Journal of Clinical Forensic Medicine, which includes a section on "If the subject had an orgasm does it mean that she [or he] consented?" Answer: NO.

dj-bizmonkey
thanks anarch!
opheliathemuse
Can body betrayal just be arousal? I mean, the body's way of protecting itself?

ophelia, yeah, one of the commenters said something about how it's "the body's natural response, trying to protect the almighty reproductive tract from damage" or something. Makes sense, biologically. What a way to fuck up the emotions, though.

crazyoldcatlady, how ridiculous. FOX, by any chance? Not that the Big 3 are much better, really.
