girltrouble

Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi may not be able to make nathan's 4th of july hot dog eating contest-- the superbowl of eating. how can we survive this?!?

kobayashi:not so hotsy

Wow, that's a big f-in penguin!

Bong hits for jesus, I love it!

And GT, it's the end now! What are we going to do without the world champion of cramming your gullet in a championship of gluttony! I am curiuos why anyone would want to eat that much food, wouldn't it make you constipated?
pollystyrene
Re: Kobayashi- y'know that MTV documentary series, True Life? They had one, "I'm a Competitive Eater" and part of it was about Kobayashi. It's amazing to watch him train- he went into this noodle shop in Japan and the chef just kept bringing him food, and, apparently in Japan, whether you're a competitive eater or not, it's a faux pas to not finish your food, and the chef wanted to challenge him, too. He ate 22 pounds of noodles in one sitting. They also brought him this shaved ice thing that had a super-spicy pepper flavor to it. He ate the whole thing, including all the spicy flavoring.

The other weird thing was that before he eats, his got quite the set of six-pack abs; after he eats, he's got the "food baby" thing going.
culturehandy
All that food would give me some mean ass indigestion, among other things.
girltrouble
yeah i've seen that mtv thing... i have this weird repusion/attraction to watching those contests. i can't turn away...(maud help me!)
culturehandy
It is like watching a train wreck.
ginger_kitty
I just can't watch that stuff, it kind of makes me sick. How do they do it?

HOLY CRAP GIANT PREHISTORIC PENGUINS!!!! wub.gif

btw, that gay bomb story has been floating around for a few years. they never even started to make it, it was just a theory. but somehow it resurfaced recently and now there is, of course, the gay bomb porno (link VERY nsfw).
culturehandy
I really want to know who came up with the idea of a gay bomb. I mean, was someone sitting ina bathtub playing with themselves when they had an epiphany?

*Dubya sitting in a bathtub with wank in hand*

How can we take care of the terrists? hmmm. *diddles more*

I know! We'll get the nucular scients to make us a gay bomb! We'll get the terrists to love each other.

I want to know who came up with this! I really do. *bangs head against desk*

for fuck's sake, that was horrible. but i heart the person who said Don't these people watch "Stargate"? : We've had quite a lot of success in fighting the god who hates our world.

Those people are psycho. I remember they went down to south Texas (where I'm originally from) to go protest at a soldier's funeral. Only the local papers printed a heads up and a whole bunch of counter-protesters showed up threatening to beat their asses down.

They remind me of that "baptist" church that kept preaching that all the people who died in the tsunami deserved it because they were heathens, since it struck in areas where Christianity wasn't the number one religion.
chachaheels
Can't someone charge them with plagiarism for using that "We are the world" song? I'd love to hear they've been officially silenced for stealing the music for their little hate video. If nothing else, couldn't a copywright violation bankrupt them with fines and penalties?

Even the "director" is ashamed. As he/she should be.
sixelacat
Unfortunately, I don't think they can be sued for that horrific little number. I believe you have to have or intended to make some sort of profit to violate the copyright law, and that video is more like a home video posted on the internet. At best a (very very weak) case could be made by saying they made the video to solicit new church members, but it wouldn't go anywhere because I don't think the "church" makes any profit.

What gets me is that usually deranged fantasies have some sort internal logic to them....so what the heck was that?! If it's "too late" and we're all going to burn, then why the video (and protests, and everything else)? Is it all just some sort of elaborate masturbatory I Told You So? The word "freaks" just doesn't cut it....

Oh, and I live less than an hour from those people. I've seen them up close and personal. The dead skunk in the Grossies thread is more pleasant. *shudder*

Very sad.

The article talks about shelters and stuff for these women, but is there any group trying to change the culture's beliefs? I know the caste system in India is thousands of years old and very hard-wired into society, but is anyone trying to press for change?
candycane_girl
polly, there is a really great movie by Deepa Mehta that explores the world of these women, it's called Water. The part about them being considered bad luck is especially true, I remember a part of the movie where a Hindu priests warns a widow not to let her shadow touch a bride that she is walking past.

I had never heard of this being caused by tradition, I had always heard that it was a part of the Hindu religion. The widow would either be burned alive during her husband's cremation (known as sati), be forced to live in poverty, or sometimes that the widow would be married to the husband's brother, if the family allows it.

I only know what my dad has told me, he's Sikh but being from India knows a fair bit about Hinduism and its traditions.

A lot of the politicians over there say that they are trying to eliminate the caste system but as you said, it's very hard to change something that so many people still believe in. I have also heard there is a belief that you have to accept whatever caste you are born into because you will be in a higher caste in your next life.

glad to know that the LEGAL LIMIT for BAC for a minor is .02. Shouldn't it be something like oh I don't know ZERO? just a thought .

Did anyone read that story about how being overweight as a kid is just as socially devastating as having cancer?

That is so cool! But at the bottom is says the 90,000 doesn't include any options like airbags or a radio. They should at least give you one for 90,000 with the air bags. What a rip off!

So I just saw a little thing that one of soldiers who acted as a lookout for the soldiers who raped and murder the Iraqi girl and killed her family has been sentanced to 110 years in prison. He is 23 right now. And that's military prison too! Mofo's.

Katrina Victims Feel Trapped By Trailers

...And now there are reports of formaldehyde in those FEMA trailers. How much more fucked over can the Katrina survivors get?
faerietails2
No, really Steve. I'm just tallying up your posts and waiting for them to delete you so I'll know how much to send to the National Network of Abortion funds. You really are actively raising funds for underprivileged women's abortions right now.

this is a few days old, but for all the women who get angry... a look at the effects your anger can have on your career. How I wish this study was a joke.
http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/08/03/2960/
When I read this a few days ago, I blew my top. I hate how angry men are rewarded while the ladies...
missladyj
Before getting pissed off about that study I'd love to know the sample size and if it has been repeated with similiar results . The article says she conducted three tests and doesn't tell her sample size. You can't assume that her results are generalizable. Not to say that women aren't discriminated in the workplace because they are but I wouldn't get bent out of shape at this "study".

Social Science studies of that nature are always highly suspect. Like the one that claimed that women can pick who would be a good dad by looking at pictures and was done with like 9 test subjects. Not a real reliable study in my book.

Speaking of studies, Fast Food Nation was right!

polly, I was just coming over to post that! sad.

Ugh, McEvil.

On a wackier note.

And this is just funny!

I might be crazi here but.. if that were My daughter, I'd be proud of her, for having her own concepts and ideas about politics, even if they didn't, ok in a Large Way in this situation, mesh w/ my own.

after all, this isn't a dictatorship, it's a democracy.

that said- frecklette isn't too keen on the idea of my forcing her to campaign w/ me for whomever I eventually choose (assuming there Is one I like enough, right now the jury's still out) but I'm going to give her the option of debating me, on Why Exactly she doesn't support this said person, and if she can do so intelligently, I'll let her off the hook.

we raise our kids to think for themselves, and then get angry when they disagree w/ us ?

How sad....I feel really bad for that poor girl. What she wrote on the wall...so sad that someone her age could feel that much pain and becomes a genius.

Polly, heehee. Reminds me of that episode of the Simpsons when Homer gets the crayon stuck up is nose.

NYC council wants to ban the word bitch

BITCH mag is mentioned ! (but not by name)
culturehandy
I understand where the argument comes from, but aren't there better things for tax dollars to be used for? and are they going to set up some sort of thought police? ugh, this is all so 1984...
sukouyant
It doesn't make much sense. The power of those words comes from their taboo to begin with.
I guess a symbolic ban is a nice empty thing to sign your name to when you're in office.
nickclick
yeah, funny that now that the n-word and the b-word are used BY the communities they were meant to slander, such a ban is discussed. we are fighting the power of those words without your help, thank you!
knorl05
arg. dont impose your ethics on me. lets be realistic here, how many women besides Councilwoman Darlene Mealy are really that negatively affected by the word bitch? come on!! i know more women than not who take it as a compliment, meaning strong woman (mag name to prove it). if she's really looking for a word to ban.. how about.. oh i dont know.. WHORE? skank? cunt? there are way more offensive words in use than the word bitch.
sukouyant
Well, boys and men calling women bitches because of the music and scene they're into is a problem and I think that's what they were trying feebly to address. It's not going to work though.
knorl05
sukouyant: yes i can see that but if that's the intention, she's going to have to completely debase pop culture for it to actually make some sort of impact. that's like saying the fat in fast food is the culprit behind overeating and obesity. the problem is not with our words (or eg. what we eat), the problem is with our character, our values and our awareness of world around us.
sukouyant
you said that in more words than i ever could have.
i guess that you could see that and just forgot temporarily when you asked your question. it goes to show that the words are powerful on both ends of the spectrum.
