This HYSTERICAL CollegeHumor video addresses that “dumb double standard” in the TV industry that’s got so many ladies’ feathers ruffled. No, not the pay grade one … or the leading actress/actor ratio one… or the one where “30 Rock” isn’t on the air anymore. (Not quite a double standard but an issue I, as a woman, have.)  These female comedians have “a boner to pick” with HBO … for not giving us the D. It’s true! For every time we ... Read More
Aubrey Plaza is easily the greatest thing since sliced bread. (We at BUST love her so much we put her on the cover of our October/November 2012 issue!) But before she was breaking hearts and taking names in Parks and Rec, she and a group of co-conspirators made this trailer for Teen Hag, a salty spin on the movie Teen Wolf, "coming to a cave nowhere near you … 6/6/6." Plaza basically plays an awkward teenage girl (what else is new) who comes into her own ... Read More
(And speaking of Gloria Steinem…)  Here at BUST, Gloria Steinem is our golden girl, and apparently the White House thinks so too. The Associated Press reported last Thursday that Ms. Steinem was among the 16 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor. Four other women were also chosen to receive the award: Oprah Winfrey, Sally Ride, country singer Loretta Lynn and glass-ceiling-breaking judge ... Read More
As peace talks between Israel and Palestine prepare to resume this week, the tensions between Jews and Muslims, Reform and Orthodox, and men and women have never been so strict. Feminism doesn’t exactly come to mind when you think about Israeli politics – other issues, like the settlement of lands in the West Bank and displacement of Palestinians, seem more pressing, both abroad and to the Knesset (Israel’s legislative branch). But within ... Read More

Trigger Warning: This post mentions sexual violence, reactions to sexual violence, and victim blaming. Speaking of sexism and comics, this simple 3 panel webcomic tweeted today by @GirlhoodStudies is alllll kinds of genius. It juxtaposes the kinds of reactions people have to hearing about sexual harrassment and, in doing so, shows the viewer how friggin’ hard to is to talk about sexual violence in a meaningful way – as if we didn’t know that ... If you’ve been following the current abortion debate ridiculousness that’s been happening in this country, you’re well aware of the arbitrary restrictions and limits placed on abortion providers. Trans-vaginal ultrasounds, mandatory waiting periods, access to a surgical center for what is little more than an outpatient procedure; these measures pretend like they aim to protect the mother, but only protect the conservative values of the ... Calling all comics fans! Comic artist Peter Bagge has announced that he will be going on tour to promote his new book, "Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story.” The comic book graphic novel is a beeeautiful hardback representation of Margaret Sanger’s political influence and journey to becoming the public figure she’s known as today. From the Drawn and Quarterly blog: "Peter will be presenting a slideshow about Margaret Sanger's social and ... Read More
Never before have there been so many colorful ways to objectify women. Following up on the ‘slutbag’ brouhaha of last week, New York Magazine compiled a “taxonomy” of the suffixes –bag and –piece. The author, Maureen O’Connor, provides Google Analytics graphs of the two insults’ use on the Internet over the last few weeks – it seems like, thanks to the Weiner campaign, everyone’s talking trash. (To recap: ... Read More
Here’s my heroine of the day: this video shows Natalya Kuzmina, a 20 year-old powerlifter, squat a 225 kg weight while wearing a Superman t-shirt under her official leotard thingy. (That is almost 500 pounds – holy moly!) As a five-foot-nothing girl who has tried and failed miserably to lift up just the bar in my very rare forays to the gym, I am impressed by this on many levels. I feel like the strength needed to squat that much weight is more ... Read More
