M.I.A. ain’t M.I.A. no more! (I…couldn’t stop myself from typing that.) After releasing a not particularly well-received third album in 2010 and having some beef with the New York Times, the rapper/singer-songwriter had a pretty slow 2011. But in the last month, she's made it back to the forefront of your internet news feeds: she released the single, "Bad Girls," signed on to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show with Madonna and Nicki Minaj, and she has just released her video “Bad Girls." She also appears alongside Nicki Minaj in Madonna’s “Give Me All Your Luvin’" video.

The same director who did the controversial, graphic 8-minute-long short film for “Born Free,” Romain-Gavras, also directed the video for “Bad Girls.” I was expecting another long, politically charged accompaniment to the new song, but instead, M.I.A. and Gavras delivered something that was badass without being quite so brazen. (There are no scenes wherein a little ginger boy’s head explodes.) Instead, the shock-factor lies in the Typical Rapper Party M.I.A. throws…in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Also in the scene where she nonchalantly files her nails while reclining on a car that’s driving on two wheels. Maybe she is still just as brazen.

In Madonna’s video for “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” M.I.A. and fellow pastel-lipped rapper Nicki Minaj mostly play cheerleaders as a team of football players carry and chase Madonna around. I haven’t been this psyched for a lady pop singer’s collaboration with female rapper(s) since Gwen Stefani and Eve released “Let Me Blow Ya Mind”—and the video doesn’t disappoint. (Neither do Madonna’s legs. God damn.) I think it’s fair to say that the trio is more than ready to entertain the beer-guzzling, nacho-eating masses on Sunday.
